Battlefront Interviews

Battlefront Interviews 01/16/2004 11:05 AM

Both Game Spy and 1Up.com have posted interviews with some of the game producers for the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront. The articles cover comparisons to the popular Battlefield 1942, gameplay, character classes, and more. Very interesting stuff. Battlefront is due out in Q2 2004 for the PC, PS2, and Xbox (no GameCube?!).

The PC version of Star Wars: Battlefront is available at Yesasia.com for $39.99 - which is about $10.00 cheaper than most places (though only $3.00 cheaper than Amazon). Have I ever ordered from them? No. Isn't it odd to order an English version game from overseas? Yes. The shipping, however, appears to be free. Check it out. Buyer beware.

Though the item has mysteriously disappeared from the StarWarsShop.com site, I received notification today that my order for the semi-exclusive Battlefront Scout Trooper was processed for shipping. While the FedEx tracking number for my order indicates the package hasn't physically been picked up yet, it is good to know the figures are shipping despite the product having been (temporarily?) removed from the site.

As any upstanding member of the LucasArts Insider already knows, the Star Wars Battlefront action figure has been officially announced. As we reported last week, it looks as though we'll be getting a Scout Trooper (with a gigantic rifle). The latest issue of Insider also covers Star Wars Galaxies: Jump To Lightspeed exclusive screenshots, details on an upcoming Star Wars Republic Commando novel, and more. If you aren't signed up to a be a LucasArts member (which is free), you really should be.

A new image of what looks to be a custom carded Scout Trooper has shown up in our forums today. It seems that this figure will be available exclusively with the Star Wars Battlefront game. Looks like there is a new weapon included in with the figure, in order to match his appearance in the game. Thanks to Vader_Fett for the news, which came from starwars-force.com

Battlefront Scout Trooper Variations

Battlefront Scout Trooper Variations 09/05/2004 03:22 PM
Our friends over at POTF2.com have collected the various card variations for the exclusive Scout Trooper figure from the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront video game. It all has to do with the "Not For Resale" stamp on the front of the card. Click on the thumbnail above for the details. Another possible variation reported earlier is the "clean or dirty" versions of this figure. Most carded samples I've seen are the clean version, although this auction suggests we will also see the dirty version as well.

Front and back images of the LucasArts-exclusive Scout Trooper figure recently surfaced online, and brings up a question. While the figure itself is merely a repack of the POTJ version with the POTJ IG-88 rifle, original images showed the "dirty" version (seen here), while these new images show a "clean" version. Which version will be offered...or perhaps both? Time will tell. Images courtesy powerjedi999.

I seem to be on the other end of the phone in conversation with Halley over at IT Conversations Memory Lane. It all seems like an out-of-body experience now. In Open Source Person, Tim says: I thought it might be entertaining to give a blow-by-blow account of my job hunt here, naming names, trading off pluses and minuses, telling all. Then it dawned on me how incredibly clueless and lame-brained that would be. Amusingly, I've been down that road too. I'd love to be able to blog the job contacts, interviews, and offers I've had in the last year or two, but it probably is a bad idea even...

David sez, "A friend loaned me a bunch of tapes, and one of them turned out to be an audio interview of Philip K. Dick, interviewed in his home. You can hear the television on and his kids playing in the background. Very relaxed and chatty. I transfered it to mp3s. Everything you hear is exactly what was on the tape. I don't have a lot of server space, so I'll have to post the mp3s a batch at a time. I wouldn't mind if someone wants to provide greater hosting capabilities." Here's David's email if you have some spare hosting capacity you'd like to pass along.

Exit Interviews by Gallup

Exit Interviews by Gallup 03/13/2003 10:14 AM

Marybeth is skeptical about a call she got from Gallup, ostensibly to conduct an exit interview about her leaving MSFT.  It could very well be legitimate.  I blogged about this two years ago, and I still think it's a good idea; especially in cases like Marybeth's, where the employee is otherwise hesitant to be candid.

On the other hand, just because someone has your phone number and claims to be from Gallup doesn't necessarily mean that they are legitimate.  Not everyone who cold calls me at home is a criminal running a scam, but I don't feel like I've missed out on anything special by acting as if they are.

~

Marybeth's story and some of the responses in blogland have spurred me to collect my thoughts on the topic of "difficult work situations".  I've written about the subject here in the past, but would like to post something more comprehensive.  Hopefully soon...

Interviews With Martin Fowler

Interviews With Martin Fowler 12/31/2002 01:58 AM

In this six-part interview, which is being published in weekly installments, Fowler gives his views on many topics, including refactoring, design, testing, and extreme programming.

In Part I, Fowler makes the business case for refactoring and testing, and describes the interplay between refactoring, design, and reliability. In Part II, Fowler discusses design principles of avoiding duplication, separating presentation and domain logic, being explicit, and describes how refactoring depends on code ownership. In Part III, Fowler differentiates between planned and evolutionary design, suggests that focusing on superficial problems can lead to the discovery of substantial problems, and claims that doing a good job won't slow you down.

In Part IV, Fowler discusses design decay, flexibility and reusability versus complexity, four criteria for a simple system, and interface design. In Part V, Fowler describes the unhurried quality of test-first design, defines monological thinking, and distinguishes between unit and functional testing. In this final installment, Fowler describes how to balance maintainability and efficiency and create tunable software, and discusses the role of patterns and the Agile Software Manifesto.

Low Down On Red ARC Trooper

Low Down On Red ARC Trooper 11/01/2003 04:16 PM
Official word from Hasbro states the red ARC Troopers recently showing up in a few eBay auctions are in fact the real deal. The figures are the result of a running line change to correspond with the red ARC Trooper soon to be featured in Cartoon Network's micro series. Images of the red ARC Trooper first appeared in promotional material distributed at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, but last week's appearance of the figure on eBay marked the first indication a toy associated with the character was forthcoming. Following that report, many collectors were left wondering if the figure was indeed genuine or just a very well done custom, thanks to Hasbro for clearing up the confusion. Be sure to watch for the red ARC Trooper at your local toy retailer soon!

Scout and MegaScout 04/18/2004 10:56 AM
A recent National Science Foundation press release includes photos and video clips of the latest Scout emergency response robots. Scout is a small (100mm x 35mm) two wheeled, tube-shaped robot containing a video camera, IR range sensors, light sensors, pyroelectric sensors, and two-way radio links that support frequency hopping and encryption. MegaScout is a larger version that will eventually carry manipulator arms, grappling hooks, and may act as a mothership for the smaller scouts. The robots are designed to survive a six story fall or being thrown up to 100 feet into a disaster area. The Scouts are built entirely from off-the-shelf parts. The robots are being deveoped by Nikos Papanikolopoulos and other researchers from the University of Minnesota Distributed Robotics Lab, the University of Pennsylvania GRASP Lab, and the Caltech Robotics Group. More video of the robots performing amazing feats is available on the UMN website.

Cub Scout Popcorn 09/14/2004 01:28 AM

It’s popcorn time again. You may recall that last year I helped my kids set up an ecommerce site to sell popcorn for their Cub Scout pack. They wanted to understand what I did for a living and this way they got first hand experience.

This year, they’re at it again, and they’ve enhanced the site with a blog. My kids will be blogging about their experiences and what they learn while selling popcorn. The popcorn store is completely functional with payment processing provided by PayPal. Proceeds go toward Cub Scouts, with 73% of your purchase helping Scouting in Northern California. (Disclosure: The Cub Scout pack pays a small commission to my kids.)
