Apple Wireless Mouse
12/29/2003 06:12 AM Before christmas while picking up an iSight for my mom (and one for
myself) I also got myself a Wireless Mouse. Unpacking it quickly
revealed the first major problem: It's not shiny. Not "not shiny
enough", it's just not shiny. At all. Besides the non-shininess the
design isn't so bad. The on/off switch is pushing a door away from the
optical eye, very neat. Installation with Panther was a breeze, even
using both mice at the same time works...

well as the push in recent months to regain market share from Windows
has made such a move necessary.

MacMice The Mouse BT: Two Buttons,
Scrollwheel, Bluetooth Brings Apple
Firmly Into 2001
06/25/2004 08:53 AM
MacMice has updated their 'The Mouse' -- you know,
the one that adds a right click and a scrollwheel to an Applesque
mouse -- now incorporating Bluetooth, to come up with The Mouse BT.
But they're not late to market, no. Instead, they took their
time to "eliminate many of the annoying shortcomings that are present
in earlier BT mice."
You know, I actually saw one of these The Mouses the other day in
person (a corded one, not the Bluetooth model) and they really look a
lot better in person than they do on their website. Something about
their photos makes the acrylic shell look rough, but it really isn't
when you actually see it.

Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?
Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?
05/03/2004 01:38 PMThere's an enormous thread of PowerBook G4 15" owners on Apple's
discussion boards, going into detail on the "white spots" and "uneven
illumination" problem with this model. I bought mine last fall, and
had to return it twice (first one was DOA, the second had the
white-spots so bad that strangers on airplanes would come up to me
and say, "Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with your screen?").
Now I'm on my
third unit, and it's got the same problem:
screen at about 50 percent brightness, big white splotch in the middle
of the it.
It's still under warranty, but that doesn't do me any good: There's no
way I can part with my machine for 3-7 days while Apple fixes
it. Normally, I own two PowerBooks, the current one and a slightly
older one (so that I have a working unit during repairs), but when I
moved to Europe, I divested myself of all but a single CPU, so now I'm
pretty scr0d.
The scoop appears to be that Apple is replacing these lemons with the
new 1.5GHz models (which may or may not have the same problem), but I
doubt that they'll ship me the replacement, let me transfer my data
and then send back the old 'un. I'm just going to have to work off the
world's shittiest display until I can scrape up the dough to buy
another machine. Bummer.
Recently it has worsened to the point where I took it in today to the
Apple store in Old Orchard. The attending Genius immediately noticed
the uneven illumination of my display and suggested that it be sent in
to the depot for repair. He also mentioned that this was the first
time he had ever seen or heard of this problem before, and that there
are no reports in the knowledge base that described this issue. When I
mentioned to him that he might take a look at this thread in the Apple
Support discussions, he wanted no part of it. He said that he rarely
reads these forums, and dismissed it as "Oh well, people posting to
discussion groups are mostly complainers" (those were not his exact
words, but it was implied). Then I told him that people are posting
actual photos of this problem and that all of the symptoms look
identical for each person, which could indicate a manufacturing
defect. His response was that "for those people, I suppose perception
is reality".

02/06/2005 03:24 AMI was in the drugstore picking up a prescription and wandered into the
computer section, where I found myself impulse-buying
The Mouse BT from some
outfit I’ve never heard of called DVForge. It’s Bluetooth and
looks like an Apple mouse, only it’s got two buttons (the way this
is accomplished seems to rely on bending acrylic in a really clever
way) plus a scrollwheel. It’s slick, slick, slick; and looks neat. I
bought the Aluminum model but now that I realise there’s a white
version too I think that would look better. On top of looking nice,
the scrollwheel is the smoothest I’ve used. I’m kind of worried
how fast it’ll go through batteries; I’ll report back when I know.

Myron Krueger began his pioneering work in interactive
art in 1969. He was one of the first to explore the aesthetics of
interactivity with his “responsive environments.” ¶ While
preparing a talk that included a reminiscence of Krueger demoing
Videoplace in the 80s, I was surprised he’d not
yet merited even a stub in the Wikipedia. While that may eventually
motivate me to register and start the page, for now, I will just share

Do Not Touch That Mouse
Do Not Touch That Mouse
12/30/2004 04:39 PMWe've all seen examples of how various companies are attaching more
and more ridiculous "warnings" to products thanks to ever-present
product liability suits because someone didn't realize things like
that they shouldn't submerge their toaster in the bathtub they were in
at the time. While many of these are simply funny examples of "who
would ever actually
do that?" some new laws are creating some
absolutely bizarre warning labels. Take, for example, warning labels
that are showing up on certain computer mice in the state of
California. Thanks to regulations, some mice have warnings saying you
should
wash your
hands after handling them. The warning is specifically referring
to the cord, and the fact that it has a tiny bit of lead in it, but as
the article points out, unless the cord is broken up, you'd probably
have to
eat a fair amount of your mouse cord before you'd have
a problem from lead poisoning. Still, apparently, some users are
returning the mice, fearing for their safety.
