Speech tomorrow at Rakuten

Speech tomorrow at Rakuten 01/08/2004 08:09 PM

I'm giving a speech about the future of the Internet tomorrow afternoon from 2:30pm-3:30pm JST. The speech will be at the Rakuten New Year party. (Rakuten acquired Infoseek Japan and I am now on the Portal Group advisory committee.) I'll try to stream it, but it will be in Japanese. My slides are in English and I've put my outline on my wiki. Please feel free to add comments or links to examples on the wiki. The outline just lists the topics I will cover, but not what I'm going to say. ;-)

I'll be giving live demos of #joiito and IM so if you're around, I might ping you.

I'll be using keynote exported to QT inside of Safari with my examples loaded in tabs.

The latest version of the Keynote QT is here.

GRIPE : Keynote doesn't let you put hyperlinks in presentations. They should either figure out some way to embed Safari inside of a Keynote presentation or allow hyperlinks. Apple Computer presentations use two machines, one for browsing and one for Keynote. Doh. Not very user-friendly.

I will be streaming this if I have enough bandwidth. Copy and paste this URL into QuickTime rtsp://stream.joi.ito.com/j oitv.sdp. (Warning. Japanese.)

UPDATE: Sorry folks. Didn't have a Net connection so couldn't connect to IRC or get Hecklebot working.

I have not seen the sources of the Pharrot compiler, but if it is just a proof of concept, it is not likely that much error-checking is done. I expect the figures for Pharrot below to increase by at least 50% when all the error-handling is put in.

The figures are still very impressive despite these reservations.

Cisco Gets FAST

Cisco Gets FAST 02/14/2004 01:04 AM
Cisco develops new EAP-FAST method to avoid certificates for username/password authentication without passive dictionary attack threat: Cisco EAP-FAST (Flexible Authentication via Secure Tunneling) uses a pre-shared secret or a Diffie-Hellman key agreement exchange to mutually authenticate both the client and server in a tunnel and avoid man in the middle attacks. Once the tunnel is established, the secrets can be changed as well, according to the draft of the standard submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The standard will be available as a free download from existing Cisco software at the end of March, and the company hopes to have it accepted alongside PEAP as a method of securing EAP without the same overhead issues involved in that standard. Cisco isn't abandoning PEAP, they said, and will make the protocol available to its secure extensions partners, which includes most chipmakers. Interestingly, a systems engineer who has built a tool to automate dictionary attacks on Cisco's weak LEAP (Lightweight EAP) is quoted as agreeing to delay release of his tool longer because Cisco has continued to work on solving the problem through this new standard....

Why I'll never be a fast runner

Why I'll never be a fast runner 08/11/2004 10:24 AM
An interesting article in the New York Times yesterday examines Why Joggers Labor and Olympians Fly. Apparently elite atheletes (like we know from cyclist Lance Armstrong) possess physiological traits that "normal" people don't have, such as larger hearts. Exercise physiologists say there are three components to great running: A high VO2 max, the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume at maximum exertion; great running efficiency, a measurement of the energy used to run at a particular pace; and an ability to keep going at a high level of exertion for a long time, expressed as the percentage of VO2 max that can be sustained during a run. Some day I'd like to get my VO2 max measured. Meanwhile, my marathon training has been progressing quite well, or it was until yesterday when I was running in the woods, took my mind off the trail, and started thinking about the interval training I was going to do after I warmed up. Then I tripped on a root and went non-Olympian flying through the air, bonking my knee as I skidded along the pine needled floor of the forest. No interval training after that, just a slow jog back home and a day of icing the knee. I guess I'm still in the "Joggers Labor" phase of my running career.

Shibori Japanese Tye-Dye

Shibori Japanese Tye-Dye 01/16/2004 12:59 PM
Shibori< /a> is an amazing Japanese textile dying technique--a very sophisticated form of tie-dye, where nubby, lumpy, bizarre things like this are transformed after dying into this fish or these flo wers (scroll for detail) or these starbursts. Specifically this odd thing became this (detail). You can find excellent photos and descriptions of the process here, here(scroll down and hold mouse over photo), and here. There is also information at the World Shibori Network . This photo shows partially dyed fabric and here is a video of the preparation for dying. Shibori is very labor intensive (carpal tunnel syndrome-city) and was a one time subject to a sumptuary tax and one form was outlawed by an emperor for being too extravagant. There are many different knots and ties for different patterns--browse here, here(gallery1-7), and here. Shibori can be used to make some striking and detailed images. Diverse examples of shibori --iris, layer ed squares, waves, kimonos, large bridge banner, subtle black and white winter scene, , a nifty “aerial view” of earth as a tidal pool with hot air balloons (detail of anemones). Don't miss the stunning work of Hiroko Harada (English/Japanese) . I especially like Rain In the Forest, There Are Ripples On the Cloth, Seasonal Changes, and this large installation. You can browse more here, but the Japanese page has more.

Wikilike Blosxom Plugins: textile 2 and

10/28/2003 11:06 PM
Todd Larason has released a textile 2 Blosxom plugin, a wrapper around Brad Choate's mttextile, in turn an implementation of Dean Allen's textile 2 powerful text formatting engine.

I finally had a couple-three minutes to rub together and used them to create a quickie kwiki plugin which uses Brian Ingerson's CGI::Kwiki as a formatting tool for Blosxom weblog entries.

Between the text-formatting options offered by the textile 2, kwiki, or tiki plugins, wikiword functionality of the wikiwordish plugin, and in-page editing of the wikieditish plugin, we've a nice set of tools for building Blosxom-based a fully-categorizable WikiWeblog.

In fact, paranoidfish< /a> did a little outside the script thinking, combining CGI::Kwiki and Blosxom in a way that let's you publish a Kwiki page to your Blosxom blog.

The similarities between CGI::Kwiki and Bloxsom are obvious - both are brilliantly simple, and both use plain text files in a directory as a file system. So, I was wondering if it was possible to use CGI::Kwiki as a backend for Blosxom in some way. Unsurprisingly, the answer is yes.
I did some similar fiddling a while back, sharing a data directory between Blosxom and moinmoin. Every wiki page was a blog post; every blog post a wiki page.

Why the Windows API is Dying

Why the Windows API is Dying 06/17/2004 06:45 AM

How Microsoft Lost the API War: This is an incredibly long, but very interesting, article from Joel Spolsky in which he explains why the venerable Windows API is dying. He spends 6,252 fasinating words and a couple of dozen tangents getting to this point at the end:

[...] Microsoft's API doesn't matter so much. Web applications don't require Windows. [...]

I'm actually a little bit sad about this, myself. To me the Web is great but Web-based applications with their sucky, high-latency, inconsistent user interfaces are a huge step backwards in daily usability. I love my rich client applications and would go nuts if I had to use web versions of the applications I use daily [...]

None of this bodes well for Microsoft and the profits it enjoyed thanks to its API power. The new API is HTML, and the new winners in the application development marketplace will be the people who can make HTML sing.

He also says this about .Net, which will make my friend Matt feel happy and vindicated because I razz him all the time about being a Microsoft whore:

Much as I hate to say it, a huge chunk of developers have long since moved to the web and refuse to move back. Most .NET developers are ASP.NET developers, developing for Microsoft's web server. ASP.NET is brilliant; I've been working with web development for ten years and it's really just a generation ahead of everything out there.

There you go Matt, now leave me alone.

A Long Dying Done...

A Long Dying Done... 04/24/2004 12:42 AM
Spalding Gray, as my friend Mountain Girl said, had a very long dying. Part of him died colliding with a mad cow veterinarian in Ireland during the summer of 2001. A lot of him died in cranial surgery on the Upper East Side in September of that year. He literally died in New York Harbor in January. For many, he conclusively died only when his mortal shell surfaced near Greenpoint last month. For myself, I laid him to rest, as much as I ever will, a week ago in the Vivian Beaumont Theater. I have surpassed the usual lifetime quota of memorial services by some long measure but I don't know that I have ever attended one that felt more appropriate to the essence of its focal missing person. Spalding Gray was as present as anyone so absent could possibly be. He was present in the monsoon deluge that soaked me on the way to Lincoln Center. It was a rain where you could drown by looking up, as turkeys are said to sometimes do, and it leaked in streams through the aging 60's roof of the Vivian Beaumont, pooling in several areas of the stage but missing the lonely oak table and its empty chair. He was present in elegant clarity of those who rose to remember him. He was present in their humor and their melancholy, their heartful candor, their diversity. And it was a motley crew it was, ranging from fellow monologuist Eric Bigosian to musician Laurie Anderson to actor Eric Stolz to poet Bob Holman to composer Philip Glass playing a musical sigh for piano and clarinet, to Judy Collins leading us all in "Amazing Grace." There were some perfect moments, like when essayist Roger Rosenblatt, perfectly manicured and patrician, recalled Spalding's prodigious farts. Or when his very close friend Robby Stein talked about Spalding, the weirdly great dad, and you could see his results so clearly in the shy, impish smile that his son Theo wore when he mounted the stage. He provided some of those moments himself, though various video clips from his monologues, his stage performances, and a wonderful out-take from a Barbara Kopple documentary which, though shot after his accident, made it clear that the old Spalding was still with us until his second surgery in September of 2001. In it, there were dogs howling in the background, and his visible appreciation of them reminded me of the time that he convinced me and another friend to bay like wolves with him in a fancy Tribeca restaurant. And a whole table full of Wall Street swells howled back. He will have another memorial service for family and close friends in Sag Harbor on May 15, and I expect that the virtual monument you are building here with your comments will continue to grow. But I'm am going to get back to blogging about other things now. I'm very glad that I was able to provide a place for this to happen, but I feel like it's time for me to move on. In closing this chapter, here are the brief remarks I read at the Vivian Beaumont, condensed in part from things I've said here. I've said my piece and I will let Spuddy rest in his....

WebMonkey is Dying 02/17/2004 04:58 PM

Webmonkey, RIP: 1996 – 2004: WebMonkey is where I learned everything I told the interviewer I knew in the three weeks between the job interview and my first day. My first relational database design came from a tutorial on this site.

Webmonkey, the site that turned humble Web developers into attention-grabbing authors, said last week it is closing down following a round of layoffs in the U.S. division of its parent company, Terra Lycos (also the parent company of Wired News). Judging by blog posts and e-mails, the site's fans aren't surprised. Still, they're sad to see the end of an era.

Now The Cassette Tape Is Dying? 06/17/2005 03:33 PM
Earlier this week, we thought the VHS tape was dying, but that turned out to be a slight exaggeration. However, the VHS's older brother, the audio cassette tape may actually be on its last legs. The article notes, of course, that when the recordable cassette tape first came out, the recording industry freaked out and claimed that it would be the death of music (sound familiar?). Instead, it helped grow the music business, in part because of the ability for people to create mix tapes and give them to others to help introduce them to new music.
