Is there no such thing as a
bad laptop anymore? That's what Trusted Reviews' Gordon Kelly wants us
to believe, at least for a padded out paragraph or two. (He should
learn to do it in a sentence or three like me.) HP Compaq (HP's
Compaq? HP Compaq's) new nx9110 is a solidly built, well performing
widescreen laptop that can be had for a perfectly reasonable price
considering what you get (around £1200; it's UK-only I believe).
And as much as I might want to give him hell about it, Gordon does
have a point -- there's not much that differentiates laptops these
days besides 3D capabilities (speaking of which, the nx9110 has pretty
poor polygon pushing power).

of the computers to figure out why the spots are appearing. By Ken

Of Municipal Broadband, Astroturfing And
Figuring Out What The Real Story Is
02/05/2005 09:49 PMIt's been pretty fascinating to watch this story develop over the past
few days. Of course, it's nothing new to find out that supposedly
"objective" research was actually carried out to favor a specific
interest, but congratulations should go out to Glenn Fleishman for
focusing the attention on the real story here. The background is that
an organization called the New Millennium Research Council came out
with a report which seemed to suggest that all municipal broadband was
pure evil (well, not exactly, but that's how the pre-release info made
it sound). Glenn took it upon himself to
pull back some of
the curtain on the folks who were behind the report. eWeek then
took
that a step further, and suddenly the "story" was no longer about
the evils of municipal broadband -- but the sketchy connections
between powerful telco interests who have been fighting as hard as
they can against any kind of competition and the group that wrote the
study. Glenn later gave a
thorough review
of the actual report, where he notes it's not nearly as bad as it had
appeared from the initial leaks, and that it does raise some valid
points. However, the real story is the
underhanded way in
which this report was written, with money being funnelled from a
group supported by the big telcos to what appears to be nothing more
than a front organization to write up reports that favor its funders.
Now, others are
picking up on the astroturf attempt, rather than the
study itself.

New HP laptops it would seem, the $800 Compaq nx9020,
a $1200 nx9020, and a nx9040 with a to-be-announced price. The entire
line is aimed at small-business users that need something to perform
basic office duties with long battery life, even when using the
built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. All models can be equipped with the Celeron
M (bleh) or the Pentium M (oh ho!) processor, as well as 14- or
15-inch screens.
So basically, not that exciting, and they'll sell tons.

NetBeans
06/21/2004 02:31 AMI’ve been using
NetBeans to
inflate the Zeppelin, and you know what, it’s not bad. The Mac
integration could be a little better, but a whole lot of things I
need to do are one keystroke away. It runs plenty fast enough on the
PowerBook (mind you, only a few thousand lines of code so far).
JUnit’s right there, which is nice. The debugger makes it a little
too hard to to keep an eye on class variables, but aside from that
does about what I need; when I was
driven to “print”
statements the other day I was fighting a complex socket
conversation between two machines where one side suddenly started
seeing EOFs and I couldn’t even tell which side was wrong, I’m not
sure there’s a debugger in the world that would have been much help
there. Now all I need is to
get Jython
integrated, and we’re making progress on that, stay tuned.
