Another Odd Red Herring Article

Another Odd Red Herring Article 01/16/2004 11:01 AM

This seems to be an attempt at a big picture look at the Wi-Fi market: Big Picture it is, coming to novel conclusions such as that some enterprises will choose big names like Cisco because Cisco is well-known. Also, of all the big names in the Wi-Fi industry, the author chooses to only quote an exec from HP, which apparently is in the Wi-Fi business but certainly isn't considered a leader, and a Sony Ericsson exec....

Herring fart

Herring fart 11/05/2003 03:00 AM
It turns out that herring fart. It's not digestive gas, though. Scientists call it a Fast Repetitive Tick: a FRT.
Firstly, when more herring are in a tank, the researchers record more FRTs per fish. Secondly, the herring are only noisy after dark, indicating that the sounds might allow the fish to locate one another when they cannot be seen. Thirdly, the biologists know that herrings can hear sounds of this frequency, while most fish cannot. This would allow them to communicate by FRT without alerting predators to their presence.

Ross is at Red Herring Conference

Ross is at Red Herring Conference 12/10/2003 04:35 AM

Ross Mayfield is blogging from the Red Herring Conference. Sounds like VCs are coming back. Not sure yet that's a good thing. There's a paradigm shift coming (heck, even if you don't believe in Microsoft's vision, look at Sun's or Apple's -- all computing platforms are going to see rapid innovation over the next few years. Yet the VCs don't seem to care and don't seem to be building companies to take advantage of the coming shifts.

Here, ask yourself, do you see anything about RSS in his notes? Anything about the Tablet PC? Anything about new 3D OS's (how about new kinds of video games, new kinds of business apps? Is PowerPoint and Excel really going to be how business is done 20 years from now? Those are three things that are seeing huge changes right now. Today. Not five years from now. Yet the VCs are off funding Friendster.

Any wonder why there's tons of empty buildings in downtown Palo Alto?

Terrorist Alert Level: Red Herring! The New York Times reported today that much of the information that led to the heightened alert in New York and Washington D.C. is actually three or four years old and that authorities have no evidence or recent communications indicating an upcoming terrorist attack. George Pataki and Michael Bloomberg, who are both speaking at the upcoming Republican convention, are making political hay off of people's fears of another 9/11. Some New Yorkers are worrie d about the enormous cost of the alert to the local economy, as bridge traffic snarls to a crawl.
Who needs foriegn terrorism when we can just make our own! Are we scared yet?!

Sm artStream™ Alliance Newsreader Brings RSS One Step Closer to Mainstream

"SmartStream™ Alliance (http://smartstreamalliance.com/ ) just released a desktop newsreader for the Kerry campaign that uses technology from MyST Technology Partners. This demonstrates a unique perspective concerning smart Internet applications and the use of RSS in friendlier ways. Imagine the possibilities as you experiment with this free download." [Th ink Outside The Feed]

This is an interesting step for RSS readers, but it would make more sense to make this web-based, rather than a desktop client. In another step towards the mainstream, Time Magazine has named Bloglines one of its 50 Coolest Websites. Here's the write-up for it:

"If you want to stay plugged into the world of politics, technology, show business or any other area of professional or personal interest, you have to read Web logs, a.k.a. blogs, regularly-updated personal or collaborative online journals. The best ones are in some ways more relevant and more influential than mainstream media outlets. To keep up, let Bloglines track your favorites and deliver their latest posts in one neat package. Other good blog-aggregator services include Kinja.com, a similar though somewhat shaky service (it just launched a few months ago) that shows promise as a tour guide for those entering the blogosphere for the first time, and Blogdex.net, MIT Media Lab's study in 'contagious media' that lists the fastest-spreading ideas and news items based on how many blogs are buzzing about them."

This is the second time that Time has highlighted the benefits of an RSS news aggregator without referring to the jargon acronym RSS itself.

Scary article about the flu

Scary article about the flu 12/10/2003 06:41 PM
There isn't enough flu vaccine medicine to go around this year, but that might not matter, because the vaccine might not be effective against the "Fujian" flu that's going around.
Bad as they are, the difficulties in coping with this year's influenza epidemic are like the tiny tremors in California that remind you of the looming Big One. In the world of influenza, the Big One is a pandemic—a strain of influenza so different from what has circulated before that people have no immunity. That's what happened in 1918 when the flu killed between 20 million and 40 million people worldwide. Pandemics that killed well over half a million also struck in both 1957 and 1968.

Adsense Article

Adsense Article 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Google's AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites: An article about AdSense that states numbers, which is rare:

Tales of AdSense riches range from a few hundred dollars a month to $50,000 or more a year, though high-dollar paydays are rare. They require a Web site with tons of traffic and the ability to put in 18-hour days working the system. [...]

In his first four months of Web publishing, AdSense brought in $45,000. Some of his blogs produce $3,000 a month. His best do "four figures," Calacanis says, though he's reluctant to fill in the exact numbers. "And that's with zero marketing," he says.

There are some detractors:

"This is a program that rewards people not for creating the best content, but for how to create sites to attract more advertising," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch online newsletter. "AdSense has nothing to do with search. It effectively turns the Internet into a billboard for Google's ads."

I've been happy with the program, and that's all I think I'm allowed to say about it.

My first SitePoint article

My first SitePoint article 12/10/2003 10:11 PM

Enhancing Structural Markup with JavaScript is my first published article for SitePoint, a web development portal that is also home to some of the best web design forums on the web. I've been a big fan of SitePoint for a number of years and it's great to finally have contributed something to the site. The article discusses two methods of building useful Javascript effects on top of well structured markup and is based on my easytoggle and blockquote citations experiments, both previously featured on this blog.

Associated trivia: The dopey looking photograph the accompanies my profile was taken outside a youth hostel in Amsterdam earlier this year.

Airy BBC Article

Airy BBC Article 01/05/2004 01:39 PM
The BBC has a silly article about Wi-Fi written by a reporter who fails to include any sort of insight or analysis between statistics: The piece hinges on the buzz around BT OpenZone's plans to offer free Wi-Fi access from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1. The stunt aims to boost awareness and increase use of the network. Looks to me like another sign that the big operators are still struggling with a business model around Wi-Fi....
