VoWLAN Study Group?

VoWLAN Study Group?

VoWLAN Study Group? 01/16/2004 11:01 AM

Voice over WLAN vendors have asked the IEEE to start a VoWLAN-specific study group: Currently, aspects of 802.11 related to the needs of VoWLAN are broken out in 802.11e (quality of service or packet prioritization and scheduling), 802.11f (inter-access point communication, which includes fast handoff of authenticated users), and 802.11i (encryption). Voice calls need very fast handoff as users roam, and the current standards are apparently not focused specifically enough for some vendors. As expected, Cisco has its own proprietary plans, yadda yadda yadda....

Obvious Meta Group Study 01/28/2004 01:31 PM
This Meta Group study is a bit of a no-brainer: The researchers looked at the hotspot aggregation model and found that aggregators offer a good option for enterprises looking to offer workers remote places to get access. Researchers found that while 70 percent of enterprises outsource remote dial-up services, less than 10 percent have deals for remote Wi-Fi access. That makes sense given the maturity of the dial-up market compared to the Wi-Fi market. The study also ranks the leading aggregators, including Boingo, Fiberlink, GRIC, and iPass....

Telesym Podcast: the Future of VoWLAN

Telesym Podcast: the Future of VoWLAN 03/14/2005 05:47 PM
If you're interested in where Voice over IP over WLAN is heading in the enterprise, listen to this interview with Telesym: I met over in Bellevue, Wash., today with Telesym, a firm that extends an enterprise-based phone exchange (PBX) system into laptops, handhelds, and "scanners": bar-code devices used in retail and logistics by store and floor personnel. I spoke with Mike Houston, Telesym's director of Marketing, Ken Myer, senior VP of sales and marketing, and Jennifer Gehrt, a founding partner at Communiqué Public Relations about Telesym's position in the market, but more largely about the future of VoWLAN. (Ken had to leave for a meeting, so I spoke primarily with Mike in this podcast). You'll hear at the outset of the recording after my introduction a conversation we had using Telesym technology: I was on a USB headset connected to a Telesym client running under Mac OS X; Mike was on a cellular phone. I had the recorder up to the headphone on the headset; next time, I'll plug the recorder into the line out on the laptop to better demonstrate the quality. The audio file is available as an 8 MB MP3 download, a 6 MB MP3 compressed with ZIP, or your podcast-capable news reader should already have identified it....

Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones

Netopia to Certify VoWLAN Phones 01/23/2004 04:14 PM
Netopia said it has created a voice over Wi-Fi phone certification program: The program will certify that voice over Wi-Fi phones interoperate with Netopia's VoIP gateways. This is fine for Netopia, but doesn't guarantee that such phones will interoperate with gateways from any VoIP gateway. The CNET reporter who wrote this article could afford to think a bit more critically rather than buying hook, line, and sinker everything companies tell her. The story reads like an advertisement for voice over Wi-Fi. She says here: "Some experts predict that cordless Wi-Fi phones could eventually replace cellular phones." I'd love to know who those experts are. Wi-Fi is a local area networking technology and it's ridiculous to imagine that it would ever cover the same amount of area as a cell phone network....

New WNN Blogs: Cell Data, VoWLAN, MIMO+N

New WNN Blogs: Cell Data, VoWLAN, MIMO+N 03/24/2005 11:23 PM
We've launched another three Weblogs on wireless: We're committed here at Wi-Fi Networking News, otherwise known as WNN, to cover and offer the widest array of reporting on wireless networking, whatever the standard. Several weeks ago, we added WiMax Networking News and WNN Europe to the mix to better separate the increasing number of stories in that area. Today, we've started the engine on three new topics that are of high interest to our readers. As with our other new blogs, you can see the most recent headlines at the right side of any page on any of our sites. Cell Data News will cover developments in 2G, 2.5G, 3G, and beyond in the U.S. and around the world. Voice over WLAN is voice over IP (VoIP) over wireless LAN, but VoWLAN is the most common abbreviation. Many enterprises, schools, and homes are adopting different forms of VoWLAN to make roaming with voice as seamless as roaming with data without the issues and costs of interior cellular voice coverage. MIMO + N News is the central point for details on the coming IEEE 802.11n standard for increasing wireless network throughput through the use of MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) antenna arrays alongside a variety of other technical improvements. MIMO devices have hit the market, but 802.11n is as long as two years away. We'll chart the course of both the market and the standard....

The Top 10 Enterprise IT Vendors have three year customer loyalty rates that range from 53% to 71% according to an extensive and independent study by the InterUnity Group. On average 2 out of 3 customers will evaluate replacement products in the next three years from these vendors. The study evaluated the loyalty of 1188 users of 10 leading IT Enterprise vendors including Computer Associates, Dell, EMC, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Peoplesoft, SAP, and Sun.While customers may choose to continue to use the existing vendor after evaluating alternatives, pricing pressure is introduced. “Vendors who understand the drivers of customer loyalty can reduce customer defections and lower the cost of sales”, according to Richard Sneider, a Partner at the InterUnity Group. “ The Customer Loyalty ICSI is useful to purchasers as an indicator of how well a vendor will meet its needs over the long term.” [PRWEB Jun 23, 2004]

I Can Only Study So Long 12/13/2002 05:22 PM
This site is now using a new version of my RSS parser. The new version is slightly more efficient but much more functional. I am going to torture test it for a few hours and if all goes well, which it seems to be thus far, I will release the script for download tonight. Among the new features of the parser, is that nearly all information is available from RSS feeds, not just the <link>, <title>, and <description> elements. Conditional GET statments and caching were retooled a little, but they're functionally identical to the old version. Jeffrey Zeldman over at Zeldman.com has introduced a new sidebar on his page called "Relevant Externals", where he links to "independent web productions". I am proud to have ReadingEd.com among the great sites in that list. Thanks Mr. Zeldman. Elsewhere, G.K. Nelson of Stonefishspine laments about being distracted from his regular web duties while learning some new web tricks. Happily I notice he mentions my work there in a good light. I have always been a big fan of Stonefishspine, both for its handsome presentation style, and its intellectual content. I'm honored. I contributed to ZENcat, you should too. Sebastian Van Sande has introduced Open Channels which parses content out of selected RSS feeds (using my RSS parser) for your viewing pleasure. Bad Web Presence Case Study 01/09/2004 09:58 PM

Charity Begins at Home. It Can End Online: Here's a fascinating story of incredible Web incompetence. A journalist tried to donate to the Cousteau Society but was thwarted at every turn by an abandoned site, a Flash site invisible to search engines (the link above), and an email delivery issue.

Why did I get no response to my e-mail? "E-mail is routed through France. That one went to the Paris office. The one person who picks up all the e-mail is the Webmaster," she told me. "He's supposed to forward anything in English to me. But he just left for the Red Sea expedition."

Bad design often has financial consequences.

Hardware

Hardware 12/19/2003 01:05 PM

I like my iBook. Its name is Snowy. Here’s what it’s missing:

  • A way to easily disable the caps lock key, for those of us whose large clumsy hands keep hitting it by mistake.
  • Better yet, no caps lock at all: for such a rarely-used key it takes up inordinate space on the keyboard. You could lock and unlock caps by hitting Shift twice, no?
  • A low-wattage FM transmitter, so audio can be played through a home stereo without mucking with jacks and cables.
  • Somewhere else for the CPU. Even with ample circulation the heat buildup under the heel of my left hand is annoying.
  • Better access to the function keys. I’m roughly four times more interested in using f-keys than I am in Exposé or adjusting volume or screen brightness, yet I have to use a combination of keys to get to them.
  • A full stop/period/dot/whatever that doesn’t require the shift key (particular to AZERTY keyboards but a pain nonetheless).
  • The ability to close the screen without it going to sleep, so it can operate as an unobtrusive stereo component, server, downloader, whatever.
  • It should sense whenever I enter the room and immediately begin playing Back in Black by AC/DC.

Just wanted to get that out.

Evolutionary Hardware

Evolutionary Hardware 08/12/2004 04:31 AM
Taking evolutionary concepts and applying them to artificial intelligence software is nothing new, but suddenly, it's getting a lot more interest in the hardware field as well (Salon stuff required). There's just one problem: even when the evolutionary means come up with the necessary solution, it's not always to figure out how or why. For some, this doesn't matter. If they need the hardware to do something, and it does, they're perfectly happy -- even if they can't explain it. For others, though, this is troublesome. One other interesting aspect of this work is that, apparently, some of the "evolved" hardware runs into patent problems. This is particularly amusing, since patent protection should be designed to stop humans from "stealing" ideas from others. However, can you patent evolutionary ideas that a machine comes up with on its own? It would be difficult to suggest that ideas where somehow stolen.

I’d be remiss not to pass on more of the helpful information people have sent in response to the recent whine about the iBook’s shortcomings:

  • As posted before, uControl makes remapping troublesome analphabetic keys easy, e.g., putting fn keys back into usefulness and killing the caps lock, though it does require you to be utterly up to date, Panther-wise.
  • Regarding FM transmitters, Jonathan Woolson recommends this C Crane device.
  • Jonathan also mentions the importer of some industrial design porn from Japan: titanium/aluminium Powerbook and iBook stands that solve heat buildup problems and which echo the seemingly unkillable trend of vertically-oriented food in restaurants.
  • The heat under the left handrest can be reduced by NOT unchecking, as I had done, the option to ‘put the hard disk to sleep whenever possible’ when the power adaptor is plugged in (thanks to Marshall Sokoloff for pointing out that the disk, not the processor, is in that spot).
  • The glowing sleep light can of course be covered with white electrician’s tape, much in the same way that the television screen can be painted black whenever a Jude Law movie comes on.

On Hardware Failures

On Hardware Failures 01/01/2004 02:15 AM
One of the computer industry's dirty little secrets is hardware failure. The few of us who work in, near, or otherwise around large computer installations take this for granted. Companies like Yahoo have people on staff that spend a lot of their time dealing with failing memory, buggy motherboards, smoked power supplies, bad disks, and overheating CPUs. Google, from what I read, doesn't even bother anymore. But the larger world probably doesn't see this very often. Many are likely just...
