Valley on Wednesday
01/09/2004 09:46 PM
Tim Bray is coming to Silicon Valley next week. I suggested we have a little Geek Dinner and he's up for it. The plan is to meet at The House of Orient in Campbell at 7pm for Chinese food. The address is 851 West Hamilton Ave. Yahoo Maps provides this map for those more visually oriented. I'd like a rough idea of who's coming, so please leave a comment, trackback, or e-mail me if you're planning on coming. If you...

Geek Dinner Wednesday 01/09/2004 10:11 PM
Jeremy Zawodny pinged me and said “You coming to the Valley? Let’s do a geek dinner.” Sounded like a good idea to me, so he went ahead and organized it. That would be the evening of the 14th. You gotta admire a guy who’ll not only organize dinner but hang his address & phone number out on his blog.

Geek Dinner Thanks 01/16/2004 10:59 AM
Thanks much to the 20 or so geeks who came out to The House of Orient last night for the Geek Dinner. I snapped a few pics that didn't come out terribly well. Oh, and you'll see a few folks have already pinged the original post with TrackBacks to their write-ups too. As others have noted, most folks seemed to know fewer than 4 or 5 other people there, so there were a lot of interesting discussions. Several folks...

San Diego Geek Dinner?

San Diego Geek Dinner? 04/22/2004 09:22 PM
I’m going to have a free evening next Monday, the 26th, in San Diego. It occurs to me that a geekazoid gathering in those parts might be a fine idea, and the person I’m visiting said he’d even organize it if there was any interest. So if this sounds like a good idea, drop me a line; remember, first.last@sun.com.

Geek dinner Thursday night at Lulu's

Geek dinner Thursday night at Lulu's 12/26/2004 06:51 PM

I read that Robert Scoble had announced a geek dinner at Cheesecake Factory for Thursday night. Hored memories of bland over priced food rushes into my mind, so I called Robert and said "Dude - come on, we can do better than that! This is San Francisco!"

So first we tried Betelnut, but settled on Lulus. This is where Joi had a dinner a while back and we (Broadband Mechanics) had a X-mas party there back in '99 - right before.....

So please join us Thursday night.

Last time there - it was a serious schmooze fest.

And so it came to pass that the Thursday night (Dec. 30th) dinner be held at Chaat Cafe - in the shadows of Mascone - only a block away from Lulus. A virtual upheavel erupted after my absurd suggestion to have a party at Lulus.

But "no" - they complained, "it's too expensive, too hoidy toidy!" they claimed.

"But it was OK for Joi, Sifry, Kim and Howard and all these other coolio A-Listers, so why isn't it good enough for us?" I asked?

Oh well - whatever.

So $5 wraps it is.

Thursday night - 6 PM. Be there or be square.

Kasia, everyone's favorite Unix Girl, is going to be in the Bay Area for a few days. So this seems like a fitting occasion for another Geek Dinner. Friday (the 12th) seems like the best day to try getting folks together, but we need to pick a place to do it. As when Tim Bray visited, I'm going to organize this little outing. But this time I need some recommendations. I'm looking for a place that: Is in the South...

Bray on Comcast

Bray on Comcast 03/19/2003 10:24 PM
Tim Bray, one of the fathers of XML, blogs about the NY Times reporting that Comcast is going to add services to its delivery of broadband. Tim knocks 'em upside the head: Let's lay it out in maximally-simple bullet-point form so anyone can understand it: Fast pipe. Always on. Get out of the way. You can't get much clearer than that....

We're right and you're wrong. Tim Bray

I was going to try blogging Tim Bray's keynote at the SDForum Web Services Conference, but it's easier to summarize with the title of this post. Amid all the discussion of WS-* standards, Tim takes the other point of view, saying that Amazon, eBay, Google, Yahoo, and others are doing it the right way. "The stuff that works on the Internet today will work on the Intranet tomorrow" is his argument. I couldn't agree more. In related news, I got...

Writing for The Boston Globe, Hiawatha Bray asserts that the Power Mac G5 is "ugly" but sports "spectacular performance." While he is unimpressed with the anodized aluminum case that he compares to "an aluminum ingot," he says the 2.0GHz dual processor top-end system will leave you wondering "what to do with all the horsepower." His comments come in a recent column that's been posted online.

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

A Reminder about PHPCon and Discounts on It I just wanted to point out that PHPCon is now just a few weeks away (October 24 - 25) and I'll be there talking on security and programming practices for PHP. So if you can get a group together then contact Monica at mktgevents dot com. I did confirm that everyone who attends will be getting the first issue of the new PHP Journal (which looks damn good and since Jeremy is involved, I know will be good).
