Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

Quickbooks: the missing link for small

Quickbooks: the missing link for small
business Linux
12/19/2004 03:46 PM
Last week I was talking with a small business IT consultant who switches clients' servers to Linux (and Samba) all day long without any problems, but finds few clients interested in moving their desktops to Linux. The reason? "QuickBooks," he said. While there are many small business accounting packages that happily run on Linux, including GnuCash, Quasar, SQL-Ledger, and AccPac, QuickBooks dominates this market. And its loyal users don't want to switch to another package even if it's just as good as -- or possibly better than -- QuickBooks.

Linux users are spoiled

Linux users are spoiled 07/03/2004 05:28 AM
A friend got a new laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. "Does this come with an IRC program?" he asked. No, it doesn't. There are plenty of IRC programs for Windows, but you need to download and install them yourself. Word processing? Not included. Spreadsheet? Windows leaves you on your own yet again. I swear, by the time you buy or download all the software it takes to actually do something with Windows, you might as well install Linux. It would take a lot less time. I don't know about you, but my time is worth money, and if I need to do a whole bunch of software downloading and installation to make my computer usable, we're talking huge TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).

Insurance for Linux users: why is it
needed?
05/26/2004 07:36 AM
When a start-up firm called OSRM (Open Source Risk Management) announced two months ago that it planned to offer standard product liability insurance to Linux users and developers, many in the Linux community wondered why. For some, such coverage appeared to be an unwarranted admission that there was something wrong with Linux. Sure, vendor specific indemnification of users was appearing, but IBM itself, the first target for SCO's absurd legal claims denied the need. As recently as the last LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, IBM's Jim Stallings, general manager for Linux at Big Blue, was quoted as saying, "The claims that have been alleged [by SCO] against IBM [have] no basis, so indemnification is not needed." NewsForge recently interviewed OSRM's founder and CEO, Daniel Egger, to gain his perspective on the issue.

Every time I write an article about normal people using Linux with little or no training, a few weisenhimers inevitably accuse me of being an overly optimistic advocate by not warning readers that it takes a least some knowledge of Bash to run and maintain a Linux installation. The problem with this accusation is that it might have been true in 1998, but it is not true in 2004. It is now possible to run Linux without knowing any commands beyond point-and-click, cut-and-paste, and drag-and-drop. Indeed, those are the only ones I use for everyday computing myself.

games
06/23/2004 07:47 AM
About a year and a half ago the tiny independent game developer eGenesis decided to create a Linux port of its massively multiplayer online game, A Tale In The Desert. The game was designed to appeal to creative people looking for an alternative to games that focused on destruction. The company's initial thinking was that it might get a few incremental sales and garner goodwill with the community by supporting Linux. What eGenesis discovered was that, per user, Linux gamers were and continue to be their best customers. Each account, on average, has generated twice as much revenue as those of Windows gamers.

daVinci-patch-2004.gif imageKenneth Armstrong wrote in with this report: The Davinci Project, a Canadian team vying for the ANSARI X PRIZE unveiled its Wild Fire rocket yesterday in Toronto. The plan is to have a balloon carry it to 60,000 feet over the Canadian prairies and engage the rocket which will make "The da Vinci Project is on the cusp of a new era of space travel for humankind. Our team is proof positive that ingenuity and innovation can overcome the impossible." at least according to pilot, Brian Feeny. He also announced the sponsor for the flight, online casino Golden Palace.com.

No humor when an online casino sponsors a balloon carrying a rocket into space, no sir. How do you double-or-nothing a rocket?
