President Bush and US Space Policy

President Bush and US Space Policy 01/17/2004 10:48 PM
Recently, President Bush announced his new policy for space. President Bush is to be praised for his bold new vision, including at least two crucial points: Humans can and should travel beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Robotic exploration is valuable and important however is not sufficient to satisfy the human spirit. George W. Bush deserves great credit for making this point. The space shuttle must be retired. Cancellation of the wasteful shuttle system offers significant opportunity for reinvestment of significant funding. These are significant steps forward. The vision is plainly there. I see opportunity and risk for President Bush. If he demonstrates commitment to follow through with this powerful vision, he will supplant JFK as America's premier space President. If not, his recent speech may be remembered, if at all, as empty rhetoric.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. President Bush, Our Divider in Chief

President Bush, Our Divider in Chief 01/22/2004 02:11 AM
Paul Krugman (NYT; reg req): Going for Broke. But some Americans will respond to upbeat messages, no matter how unrealistic. And that may be enough for Mr. Bush, because while he poses as someone above the fray, he is continuing to solidify his base. The most sinister example was the recess appointment of Charles Pickering Sr., with his segregationist past and questionable record on voting rights, to the federal appeals court — the day after Martin Luther King's actual birthday. Was this careless timing? Don't be silly: it was a deliberate, if subtle, gesture of sympathy with a part of the Republican coalition that never gets mentioned in public.
