Spam Will Get More Graphical?
Spam Will Get More Graphical?
04/16/2004 03:29 AMYet another example of a lazy marketer who simply doesn't get it. An
executive of an "image serving company" (note the bias) is pointing
out (correctly) that email ads risk becoming like banner ads where
everyone skips over them. My one edit on his thoughts here, are that
this has
clearly already happened a long time ago. Even emails
that people requested are considered spam when they're not relevant
and/or they show up way too often. However, then this guy starts
pitching his company as the bizarre "solution" to this problem. His
idea is that
if only
advertising emails had more annoying flashing graphics then
everything would be okay. The thinking on his part is that even if
people just delete the email, those who use a "preview pane" will
still see the image - even if briefly. Well, of course, these days
you shouldn't use the preview pane and you shouldn't have HTML mail
turned on. Furthermore, the idea that the way to get around people
getting sick of annoying emails is to make them
more annoying
doesn't make much sense. If your business really depends on someone
catching a glance of an image while they're deleting your
unwanted message, perhaps you need to be in a different
business.

Making usage statistics on a web site is one of the most enjoyable
things for me on the Internet. Thanks to the technology, you can see
each click of each visitor, the date of the visiting, and how many
seconds the user was reading your site. I use this feature to track
which of my articles was read for the longest time. In this article I
will show you how to store the statistics in a MySQL database, show
the web stats in an HTML table and make figures based on the stats
using the GD library.

The world of religious
icons and other illustrative and symbolic elements is well-documented
both in print publications, and to a lesser extent, in various online
archives and exhibitions. But what about the world of graphical user
interfaces, such as the icons that populate many of our computer
screens? Curious visitors will find their fill at this online museum
of graphical interfaces, many of which even some long-time computer
users may have forgotten about. Divided into categories such as icons,
sounds, components, and interfaces, the site contains over 2675
pictures and 651 icons from 51 interfaces. Visitors may want to browse
through some of these sections, especially ones like the "Splashes"
area where they can view some of those iconic images that are (or
were) displayed while various programs are in the process of
launching. Here visitors can view such classics as those splashes
created for Netscape Navigator 2.0 and Microsoft Word 1.1. Also, even
the most stoic user may shed a tear while listening to some of the
"classic" sounds of such platforms as Windows 95, which are also
available here. Rounding things out here are a selection of historical
articles on graphical user interfaces, and a few advertisements from
the not-so-distant past, including one featuring a certain Harvard
drop-out-turned billionaire. [From The Scout Report, Copyright

A Digital Divide
A Digital Divide
08/27/2004 02:03 PMIt would be better for consumers if Apple began licensing its digital
rights management software, only because the iTunes Music Store will
not be able to lock up access to all the copyrighted music in the
world. But RealNetworks' conetnion that Apple is stifling freedom of
choice is self-serving. By New York Times (via MyAppleMenu)
Across the great divide
Across the great divide
09/04/2004 09:18 PM

I first pointed to this stunning
Valdis Krebs infographic
back in March
2004, when the New York Times published it. Krebs has long been
fascinated with the clusters that emerge from an analysis of Amazon's
related-purchase data. I was reminded of his chart the other day when
I heard
this
exchange (Real, 1 min, 40 sec) between Terri Gross and Norman
Podhoretz, which includes this quote:
I have almost no friends any longer who are liberal, and I suspect
this is true of most people on both sides of the divide. Since the
sixties, the polarization has become more intense, and there are fewer
and fewer friendships that can be sustained across the divide in this
country.
What religious differences used to be, and aren't any more (in our
world, not the Muslim world), political differences have become.
They've acquired a kind of religious intensity, and are tinged with a
kind of intolerance that used to characterize religious differences.
[Norman
Podhoretz, inteviewed by Terri Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, Real, 20
min.)
Having lived on both sides of the chasm -- he was a radical liberal
before he became a founder of neoconservativism -- Podhoretz seems to
have a rare appreciation of the great divide. I suspect the majority
of us, not having lived on both sides, lack that same gut-level
appreciation.

On the Great Atlantic Divide

On
the Great Atlantic Divide Published on Sunday, October 26, 2003 by
TomDispatch.com. By Susan Sontag.
I came across this piece at
dailyKos
"Two weeks ago during the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Association of
German Publishers and Booksellers awarded the Friedenspreis des
Deutschen Buchhandels (the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade) to
Susan Sontag. She was cited for standing up for "the dignity of
free thinking" and for her role as an "intellectual
ambassador" between the United States and Europe. The
association's director Dieter Schormann commented, "In a world of
false images and distorted truths, she defends the honor of free
thought." In its over half-century of existence, the
Friedenspreis Prize has been awarded to Chinua Achebe, Max Frisch,
Jurgen Habermas, Yehudi Menuhin, and Vaclav Havel among many others.
An excerpt from Susan Sontag's acceptance speech was published today
in the Los Angeles Times Book Review section, but I thought the whole
speech, which focuses on the increasingly embattled relationship
between Europe and the United States, or rather between much of
Europe, especially the various peoples of Europe, and the Bush
administration, was well worth reproducing as a whole. Near its end is
a rare moment in which Sontag considers an aspect of her early life in
public. Her most recent book, by the way, is Regarding the Pain of
Others. What follows then, with her kind permission, is her full
acceptance speech. (The title and subheads are, however, mine.) Tom
