Bloggers rake CBS

Bloggers rake CBS 09/13/2004 03:41 AM

I've gotten a fair number of questions of what I think about the bloggers digging into CBS with evidence and conjecture about the authenticity of the memos about George Bush's national guard service. I wanted to figure out what I had to say first, before saying it. So here goes.

1. That bloggers are great and powerful news breakers and fact-checkers is no news to me, or to readers of this blog. Reminds me of the time, four years ago, when it was discovered that AOL Time-Warner was running an MP3 search engine that was even easier to use than Napster, at the same time as suing Napster along with the other RIAA companies. I had to virtually beat Ryan Tate at Upside over the head to get him to pick up the story and run with it. The day after he did, the Wall Street Journal picked it up, with full credit to Ryan, and none to me. I took several deep breaths and muttered "it doesn't matter" about 18 dozen times.

1a. And then there was Trent Lott. Remember him? ";->"

2. It also reminds me of the time Chris Lydon said at a Berkman Thursday meeting, that because Dick Morris, a sleazebag Democratic operator, had recognized the power of blogs, that we had won, game over, throw a party, etc. I said to Chris, I'm not doing what I do to get approval from scum like Dick Morris. In fact, if anything, I'm doing it to get rid of scum like Dick Morris, or at least develop a political process that empowers everyone but scum like Dick Morris.

3. Even blogs aren't as important as choosing the best president in 2004. If that's the only thing we accomplish with all our work over all these years, it would have been worth it. Stay focused on what winning really means. If blogs correctly tell the story of the end of the world, we didn't win. Key point. The latest we-fact-check-your-ass story was about an irrelevant detail of an irrelevant issue. Come on guys and gals, there's a real story out there. Which one of these losers should we bet our future on? Hint: It's even worse than it appears.

Good LA Times article about the lavish perks demanded by stars who attend charity events.
But many celebrities appear at these events not solely out of the goodness of their hearts. They come to line their pockets. "Stars know they can literally steal from charity," said Steven Fox, a Monterey businessman who worked with Tonken on a 1995 fundraiser for the Tommy Lasorda Jr. Memorial Foundation, named after the baseball legend's late son. "Otherwise, they don't perform. They don't appear." Actor David Schwimmer, who has made many millions of dollars starring in NBC's "Friends," received a pair of Rolex watches worth $26,413 in advance of a 1997 charity gala that had among its intended beneficiaries the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling

Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling
and John H. Brown
03/15/2003 06:05 AM
KALW in San Francisco did an hour long radio interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown, the American Foreign Service officers who resigned over Bush's Iraq policy. Both are impressive speakers, and Kiesling is as articulate and as convincing as his letter:

If we can't convince our historical allies that this is a good thing to do, there is no way we are going to be able to convince the Arab world. People have to take a stand. War may be inevitable, but we need to do what we can to keep our consciences clean. There is a policy to make America safer, but this is not it. "America is still the safest country in the world. The administration is trying to scare people with this talk about terror and duct tape. We should use our safety and prosperity and our strength to do good and we can do good."

Brown said his resignation was "in part a result of Andrew Card's comment, 'Never launch a product in August.' War is not a product." I learned a lot from listening to it. Recommended. Requires Real Player.

Tec USB Hub Wheel, Fan

Tec USB Hub Wheel, Fan 03/29/2005 04:22 AM

usb_hub.jpg imageContinuing with the Tec product announcements, the company has also introduced the "USB Hub Wheel W" and "USB Senpuuki Mist W." The USB Hub Wheel W brings a somewhat innovative development to the USB hub market by equipping the hub with a "wheel" mechanism; the cable that connects to the PC (or Mac) can be wound up inside the housing like a garden hose.

Finally, we have the "USB Senpuuki Mist W." "Senpuuki" is Japanese for "fan" (as in, "electric fan"), so I don't think this product needs a whole lot of explaining. At the center of the fan assembly is a logo plate that contains a light, so something like could be used for long summer nights in front of the boob tube (or LCD).

The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel 05/24/2004 10:31 AM

The Falkirk Wheel and Millennium Link: I saw this on the Discovery Channel the other day. It's a boat lift in Ireland used to connect two canals that are 110 feet apart vertically. You foat your boat into the cradle, and the wheel spins like a big merry-go-round.

Apparently due the cancellation of weight between the upper and lower cradles, it takes almost no effort to move your boat and the thousands of gallons of water it's sitting in. The pictures don't do it justice — you really need to watch it in action.
