Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AM
I've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro, Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper, designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a company that specializes in interaction design.

Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM (customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop, fashionable in military circles.

Beyond Segway

Beyond Segway 11/13/2003 04:02 PM
We've been receiving lots of stories about Segway spin-offs lately. First, there's the EMBRIO/2025, a next-generation, one-wheeled personal transporter design from Bombardier. It's very reminiscent of Syd Mead's gyro-balanced, one-wheel designs. No guesses on if or when it could really be made, however. Jerry D. Elmore sent us a link to several of his designs for turning the Segway into a "multi-taskable product" by allowing it to double as an automous robot that can perform surveillance or other duties. And a number of readers pointed out the new Technology Review article on Cardea, an MIT robot based on a Segway.

Move over, Segway...

Move over, Segway... 05/26/2004 01:25 PM

...here comes the Eas yGlider. Basically an electrically-powered single wheel with a long handle trailing behind it. You can let it pull you on roller blades or a skateboard, or attach a wheeled standing platform to it. It's much lighter and much less complicated than the Segway, and will likely be cheaper as well. And it goes faster too!

The Swiss manufacturer has a domain, but so far it's under construction.

This is almost as cool as the new Schwinn Stingray. I want one.

Segway Becoming a War Robot?

Segway Becoming a War Robot? 12/02/2003 12:23 AM
CTV.ca has an article that says U.S. considers turning scooters into war robots.Though few could afford the $4,000 Segway scooters, Universitys bought them for study and now the US millitary wants to enlist them for battlefield missions. Segways have already been modified to open doors and avoid obstacles and such, and now the military wants to send them out for search missions, transporting injured soldiers and carrying gear. So maybe the Segway scooter deserves more of our respect, because even as President Bush embarrisingly found out, these Segways now have the potential to do harm.

Another Year, Another President For
Segway
01/07/2004 06:34 PM
Segway, the massively overhyped balancing scooter company, can't seem to keep chief executives. Last year we wrote about how they had already shuffle d through a couple of presidents, and now comes the news that they've hired yet another new president and CEO, replacing the last one. This one comes from the snowmobile world, so maybe he's got better ideas for how to market such a niche vehicle. One of the previous presidents had come from Subaru and tried to sell the Segway like a car - which clearly didn't work out so well. Clearly, the company is having a very difficult time living up to the hype it generated early on.

Regarding Segway robotics, I thought you might be interested to know that DARPA funded development of a Segway-based common robotics platform (the "RMP"): Link. A group at CMU is working on a Robocup robot soccer team using the Segway RMP: Link. One cool thing about their work is that it's the first robot soccer team (as far as I know) that can play with and against humans on the field. Unfortunately they don't seem to have any images/video of that online; I saw some video at a conference a few weeks ago.

Random thing #1: I hear there's an upcoming exhibit at the Center for Land Use Interpretation of video from cameras mounted on sheep, spiders, tumbleweeds, etc. Sounded cool. Link. Sheep stampede video: Link. Random thing #2: Origami folding robot at CMU: Link.

Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway

Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway 02/10/2004 02:51 AM
Japan Today
Friday, February 6, 2004 at 14:00 JST

TOKYO - Tokyo police sent papers to prosecutors Thursday on a businessman over use of the U.S.-made Segway scooter vehicle on a public road, an unusually strict move that marks the first time in Japan that police have taken action over people riding the two-wheeled novelty.

The police allege that the 42-year-old president of an import company in the capital's Setagaya Ward violated the Road Traffic Law by having a person drive a Segway on a public road in July last year for advertising purposes.

Last year I tried to get the government to relax its regulations to allow people to ride Segways, but they wouldn't. I gave up the idea. I actually know this guy and he was insistent that he could build a business importing Segways. I guess not. This is pretty "unusually strict" but the police hate it when you make money doing stuff that they don't approve of.

Thanks for the link Chris

BoingBoing reader Roland points us to this:
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), working under a grant from DARPA, are putting humans riding Segway scooters and robots built on Segway bases on the same soccer team in the hope to encourage the kind of cooperation that leads to understanding between the both. Technology Research News has the story. This could lead to autonomous robot vehicles sharing the roadway with human-driven vehicles or robot building construction crews. Robots designed for specific applications could become practical in 5 to 10 years. Robots that interact with other robots and humans in general applications will take longer -- at least 20 years. This overview contains additional details and pictures of a human and a Segway robot playing together.

Track and Field Tech

Track and Field Tech 06/17/2005 03:44 PM

Can We Trust Track & Field Records? - How accurate are they?: Interesting anaylsis of the technology used to time track and field events. This is in the news lately because a Jamaican just broke the 100 meter record by .01 seconds. Not a big margin.

The best systems use a digital camera positioned on the stripe that marks the finish line. This camera has a very narrow field of view and records only the thin slice of space directly above the line. As runners cross the line and into its field of view, the camera takes a rapid series of time-stamped pictures. These create a composite image that shows when each athlete passed through the slice and over the line.

RFIDs Used To Secretly Track Officials
At Tech Summit
12/15/2003 02:26 AM
Every time people write about the potential for RFID chips to be misused, people come along and say that the possibility of them to be misused is pretty slim, and people should just calm down. While we agree that some of the anti-RFID rants have gone a bit overboard, the threat of the technology being secretly used to track people might not be so overblown. A report coming out late last week discovered that b adges used at the World Summit on the Information Society last week included RFIDs for tracking attendees. The attendees were apparently unaware the badges included these chips. The article is a little confusing, and does raise some questions. First, since the people who figured this out snuck into the summit, some of the article focuses on the poor security that let these people get official badges with fake identification - and the article shifts back and forth between the two stories as if they're related. The article also doesn't explain how they determined that there was an RFID chip and what it was used for. While the article claims that people at the conference were "tracked" by these chips - it's unclear that's what actually happened. They seem to indicate that attendees could have been tracked - but not that they actually were tracked. Still, it does point out some of the problems with putting RFID chips in everything. Perhaps people need to be looking more seriously at technology that might stop the "bad" aspect of RFIDs, such as a blocker chip that lets users only allow specific RFIDs to work when they want or need them to.

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PM
The Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they can't even track the thousands of different databases and logistics systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the expense of our own tax dollars.
