Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router,

for $88
08/04/2004 01:31 PM
Okay, this on is a little
hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can
flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting
tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a
"Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can
use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a
$20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.
So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi
router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you
still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't
want one in the first place.

SMC’s Newest Wireless Bluetooth USB
Adapter is First to Market with
Bluetooth 1.2 Compliance
12/17/2004 06:44 PMSMC® Networks (www.smc.com), leading provider of networking solutions
for the SMB/e, the ISP and all the way home, today announced the
newest member of the EZ Connect™ family of home networking products,
the SMC-BT10 EZ Connect Wireless Bluetooth® USB Adapter. The new
Bluetooth USB adapter makes it easy to set-up a personal area network
(PAN) that connects up to seven Bluetooth-equipped devices such as
wireless phones or PDAs. And, Bluetooth 1.2-compliance means that it
can take advantage of the better performance and faster connections,
while retaining full backward compatibility. [PRWEB Dec 17, 2004]
Mossberg on Wireless Audio
Mossberg on Wireless Audio
01/16/2004 11:01 AMThe Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg reviews the Creative
Technology Sound Blaster Wireless music system: Mossberg is very up on
the device, which avoids some of the weaknesses of similar
Wi-Fi-to-audio adapters by having its display built right into the
remote control. (Mossberg complains about having to enter a
hexadecimal encryption key into the Sound Blaster software to attach
it to his protected network. He speaks for all home users when he
writes, No normal consumer knows what "Hex" is, and companies should
stop expecting them to use it. On the other hand, when he says that
the key is rendered in an arcane and obscure kind of techie code
called "Hexadecimal" he's just being crotchety. Hexadecimal is just
base 16: 0 to 9 and the letters A to F. Fortunately, WPA will replace
the hex-interfaced WEP system eventually.) I saw a similar device,
Slim Devices's Squeezebox, at Macworld Expo last week. The Squeezebox
has wired and wireless interfaces, a nice remote control, and a
two-line bright LED display. It plays MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and WMA (among
other formats) with the jukebox running on a Linux, Windows, or Mac
system....

JVC Gets Around to Releasing Wireless
USB Audio Receivers
04/18/2005 03:08 PM
It’s strange that JVC is
hiding its Wireless USB goodness under a bushel, but three recently
released devices—the sake-soaked EX-D5 and two receivers, the
RX-D702 [pictured] and the RX-D302—haven’t gotten much
attention. Most of these were released at CES but didn’t see American
shores until this month.
In JVC’s world, Wireless USB lets the kids, who certainly enjoy
them some MP3s, stream their music at around 480Mbps. A standalone
client sits on the PC and sends music out to multiple receivers.

Whither The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver?
07/13/2004 09:01 AM
The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver sounded like a pretty decent product when PCMag
ran their little blurb. A simple and cheap ($130) 802.11b receiver
that could be dropped on any wireless network, slurp up your MP3s and
other audio, and pump out sound to your stereo. You could even listen
to internet radio without having any PCs on. So, uhm, where is it?
There's nothing on Belkin's website about it, and PCMag hasn't given
us anything else. (Thanks, Chris.)

Sirius has a new model of their satellite radio hardware, the Stream
Jockey [pictured right, because I keep going right to left for some
reason]. Also known as the XACT XTR Plug & Play Satellite
Receiver, the $100 device can be outfitted with a universal docking
station for another $60, or desperate docking stations for the car and
home can be thrown in for $50 apiece. It's clear that the Stream
Jockey is Sirius's answer to the Delphi XM Roady 2, which I just so
happen to have been testing for the last month or so.
So let that be my heavy-handed segue into my experiences with the
Roady 2, after the jump.

Apple steals iTunes customers' paid-for
rights to stream
Apple steals iTunes customers' paid-for
rights to stream
03/17/2005 03:56 AMCory Doctorow:
Apple's iTunes DRM has a lot to hate, but first and foremost is that
Apple can cheat you by taking away rights that you had when you bought
your music. If you bought music from Apple a month ago, you got the
right to stream it to anyone on your local network. If you had the hot
track that your whole dorm coveted, they could all stream the music
from your computer to theirs and give a listen.
But once you install the new iTunes 4.7.1 "update" (more accurate to
call it a "downgrade") you lose that ability. Without telling anyone,
Apple has stolen some of the rights you paid for when you bought your
iTunes music, by adding limits to the number of people you can stream
your music to in a 24 hour period. Imagine if your boom-box refused to
switch itself on if too many people were in the room -- the 21st
Century equivalent of gathering in one room to listen to music is
gathering on one network to do so, and Apple has just appointed itself
the absolute, tyrannical ruler of the size of the social group that
you're allowed to stream iTunes music to.
Never mind that the iTunes itself lacks any means of controlling
who you stream to only gives you coarse-grained password tools to
control who can connect to your streams -- unless you wall off your
collection with a password, anyone on your LAN can stream and Apple
doesn't give you the tools to limit or even see who's streaming, so
the stranger three rows over in class might be using up the one
session you're saving for your neighbor when you get back to the dorm.
Apple has done this downgrading several times before, taking away
rights you paid for, like the right to burn a playlist 10 times (down
to seven), the right to stream over the Internet (now jut the right to
stream over the LAN) -- and Apple's also used its ability to remotely
disable features on your iPod and in iTunes to shut out competitors'
products, like the Real music player and iPod Download, both of which
offered legal functionality to Apple's customers.
Apple has moved to restrict the streaming capability. In the good old
days it used to support five simultaneous listeners, but now allows
only allows five listeners a day.

Podcasting Do-It-Yourself-Guide Review
06/17/2005 03:50 PMOne of the first full reviews of my book is out and I do want to
point out several points that he was concerned about. I went to great
lengths to define acronyms as the entered the conversation and
sometimes diverging from the train of thought to make sure people
understood what specific acronyms meant before resuming the
conversation.
And certain topics he thought I covered to deeply but I felt it was
important for people to see examples of the structure of RSS as
enclosures are the glue that has allowed Podcasting to be unique in
the content delivery.
Overall though good review. [reviews.geekstreak.com]
