Bushnell Instant Replay Binoculars

Bushnell Instant Replay Binoculars

binoculars_instrep.jpg imageSomeday someone is going to get one of these digital camera/binocular hybrids right and have a hit product on their hands, but manufacturers' continual insistance to make the camera lens seperate from the binoculars really futzes up what could otherwise be a fantastic product. Take these Bushnell Instant Replay binocs, for instance, as reviewed by KC's David Twiddy. It's not a cheapo device - Bushnell is a major binocular brand - but it still doesn't take images of what you're actually seeing through the binoculars (and has a crappy shutter speed, too, it sounds like), so no matter how many flip-up LCD screens and Compact Flash slots it has, it's still fundamentally flawed. (Thanks, JP!)

RePlay suit ends

RePlay suit ends 01/16/2004 11:28 AM

EFF's ReplayTV suit ends. About a year and a half ago, the EFF along with five plantiffs (including Craig from Craigslist.org) brought about a suit against Hollywood studios in order to defend their rights to continue using ReplayTV, after the same companies sued ReplayTV... [PVRblog]

Wow! Bummer. I've been waiting years for a precedent case to establish fair use rights with TV shows and recorded movies.

Now we're back to square one.

But a giant thanks goes out to Craig Newmark and the EFF.

Alphalogix, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions and services for the connected enterprise, addresses the high cost of enterprise wide instant messaging deployment and management. With this in mind, Alphalogix developed the Versona Instant Messaging System (VIMS) which drastically lowers the cost of deploying and maintaining an instant messaging infrastructure without sacrifice to capabilities or features. This is made possible with the IM client streaming technology used by Alphalogix in the Versona Instant Messaging System. [PRWEB May 18, 2004]

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Wi-Fi Instant Replays

Wi-Fi Instant Replays 09/23/2004 01:03 PM
San Francisco Giants' SBC Park plans to allow visitors to watch instant replays via Wi-Fi: The park is already covered by Wi-Fi and next season guests will be able to use their PDAs or laptops to order up instant replays. Apparently many parks around the country are planning to offer Wi-Fi access. I'm starting to notice that an increasing number of Wi-Fi services are beginning to make unique offerings. The first stage of Wi-Fi was all about getting the networks up and enabling basic Internet access. Now that it's clear that's doable, network administrators are thinking up creative ways the connection can be used. I expect to see more and more applications like the instant replay popping up on networks anywhere....

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad

Instant Messaging Mom And Dad 01/03/2004 01:23 AM
My parents live more than 3,000 miles away from where I live, yet I'm in constant contact with them thanks to instant messaging software, which they started using nearly six years ago. It's amazing how much closer it's allowed us to remain as a family, despite the physical distance (though, my father has the somewhat disconcerting habit of waking up and logging in to the computer before I've gone to sleep the night before and starting up a conversation). It appears we're not the only family to bridge distance with such a solution. The NY Times is reporting that it's increasingly common for family members to stay in touch via instant messaging - even if they live in the same house. In some cases, it's made normally difficult parent-child communications easier, since many people are more comfortable expressing themselves through the written/typed word than the spoken word. Also, it gives a "built-in" pause in communication that often helps to stop people from saying something they'll regret, while also hiding any emotional facial response that could shut off conversation. So while some parents are complai ning that they can't get their kids offline, maybe they just need to log in on their own computer and start chatting with them.

ADS USB Instant TV Review

ADS USB Instant TV Review 06/01/2004 07:25 AM

ads_usb_instanttv.jpg imageEverythingUSB reviews the ADS USB Instant TV, an $80 USB 2.0 box that acts as an external TV tuner which can, along with the included software and Windows XP (required), turn your PC into a middling-quality, audio-sputtering PVR. It's not all awful, they say, but slow performance and strange clicking noises make the ADS USB Instant TV sound as if it is best left to those that need a bare-minimum of performance out of their TV tuner. Fortunately, it also has a bare minimum price.

Instant Gratification

Instant Gratification 06/13/2004 04:09 AM
Steve Jobs talked about instant gratification when he unveiled the iTunes Music Store -- and he was so right.
Over the weekend, I've subscribed to an online service. No it's not .Mac, but the this online service does have a name that is similar to a particular web browser on the Mac. :-)
I've subscribed because I've decided that I do need the service it provides. So, I've keyed in all the credit card information, and received an email confirming that my credit card.
But then, when I next tried to sign in, I recieved a cryptic error message. About an hour later, I tried signing in again, and instead of finally providing the service, it seems to have forgotten I've already subscribed, and invited me to join a 14-day trial instead, asking for my credit card information again.
Sigh.
I need my instant gratification.
