2004-06-09: W3C is pleased to announce Making Visualizations of Complex Information Accessible for People with Disabilities, a teleconference sponsored by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative's Research and Development Interest Group. Registration is required and is open through 21 June to 40 participants. Attendees can expect to learn about current research in making visualization technologies for the Internet accessible to persons with disabilities and to develop contacts with people performing that research. 2003-11-25: The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative's Research and Development Interest Group is extending the call for papers for its teleconference on the accessibility and visualization of complex information. We are seeking position papers from researchers and practitioners (academia, industry, government, consulting) on state of the art work in visualization technologies. Position papers are due 12 December. The telecon is tentatively 26 January 2004 and will include real-time transcription to ensure audio accessibility. Abstract:
The most exciting challenge for CRIS is to create a service for research information which should be wide-spread, distributed and actual like Google, but at the same time structured, trusted, with a complex search and navigation similar to today CRIS application. The core technology for such a "new" CRIS is the semantic web technology to integrate database contents with HTML and XML web pages for being provided to the research interested public. One (at the moment the best) possible way is to use RDF (Resource Description Framework) which is also recommended by the W3 consortium. This has been added to the articles section of Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

CSS and XHTML have given tables a pretty rough ride in recent times. Of course, this is the fault of just about all web developers who have at some point in their career used them for laying out page elements. This article is not about using tables for layout. It is about how to use tables to display information in an accessible manner. Use XHTML and CSS all you want for layout, but if you have information relationships to display, use tables and use them well.
