Fancy a job?
Fancy a job?
06/29/2004 12:28 PMMy placement here in Lawrence, Kansas comes to an end in a few
months time, and I'm now in the interesting position of needing to
find my own replacement. I'm not going to beat around the bush: this
is a fantastic job and an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for
a way in to the online news industry. The team here has won so many
awards it's hard to keep track of them all, and is very well respected
within the industry.
We're looking for an experienced server-side web developer. Our
platform here is mod_python on
Apache, but detailed knowledge of Python is not as important as a
solid understanding of the web, web technologies and how to build
useful web applications. Some Linux systems administration experience
is essential as we are responsible for a number of servers. Applicants
must have a solid understanding of SQL (we use PostgreSQL) and relational database
theory. Design skills are not important: we have a talented designer
on staff (who is also a dab hand at CSS).
So why would you want to move to a tiny town in the middle of
Kansas to work for a local newspaper? Firstly, Lawrence is not at all
like the rest of the state. It's a college town (home of the
University of Kansas) with a vibrant downtown area, a thriving music
scene and a great atmosphere. The cost of living is low, the quality
of living high and the bright lights of Kansas City are only a 40
minute drive away. Check out our local entertainment site, Lawrence.com, for an idea of just
how much this little town has going for it.
More to the point though, you should move out here because this is
a job like no other. We work in a highly creative atmosphere, with the
time between someone having a great idea and that idea rolling out on
one of our sites measured in days, if not hours. Our unofficial
mission statement (according to my boss, Rob Curley) is to "build cool
shit" - and we do. I've written very little about things we've done
here over the past year but I plan to make up for it this week by
publishing an entry every day focusing on one of the sites we've
built.
If you have any questions, post a comment or contact me directly. If
you want to apply, send a résumé to aholovaty and swillison
both at ljworld.com.
Adrian has more
information.

the movie. Jason Silverman reviews Alien vs. Predator.

Google IPO Scam Victims Fooled By Fancy
Wall Street Terms
05/10/2004 02:32 PMBack in March we wrote about a scam from someone who
convin
ced a lot of people who should know better he could sell them
pre-IPO Google shares. Among the still unnamed victims were "the
chairman of a global telecommunications company, a New York investment
banker, a corporate attorney and a senior executive at a brokerage
firm." These folks forked over half a million dollars without any due
diligence to the guy who claimed to know the founders of Google from
attending Stanford (which he didn't) and via working at Kleiner
Perkins (again not true). We also had a post noting that a simple
search query on the guy's name, though
not on Google, would
have
turned
up his questionable history. It appears that the NY Times has
just discovered the story, but did a little extra sleuthing to point
out that, beyond their scam-blinding greed to get in on the Google
IPO, what really fooled these investment bankers and big time
executives
was the
sophisticated Wall Street lingo used by the scammer. It turns out
that if you just say "participation agreement," "stock purchase
agreement" and "promissory note," combined with "Google IPO" wealthy
stock brokers and executives will simply open their wallets for you.
Also worth noting is that the scammer doesn't appear to have stored
away most of his ill-gotten gains, but rather spent a large portion of
it partying at expensive clubs and restaurants.

TSA screener: 2-book max on flights
04/18/2005 02:01 AMCory Doctorow:
My pal Ross Mayfield was told by a TSA screener that effective April
14, American fliers are only allowed a maximum of two books on
flights.
En route from San Jose to Phoenix, I was told by a Transportation
Security Agency (TSA) screener about a ban on lighters (cough)
starting April 14th, but the book allowance has been cut from 4 to
2...
I must highlight that this could be bad information and hearsay. I
can't confirm this with the DHS or TSA prohibited items list. However,
the TSA list notes it's own inaccuracy -- and the discretion of the
screener to interpret policy...
