Online Gaming As A Professional Sport In
South Korea

For a while now we've spoken about how video gaming was appro aching a level similar to professional sports, with companies starting to do sponsorship deals and certain gaming contests showing up on television, complete with commentators and fans. Well, it appears that one place where the idea has really taken off is South Korea where profe ssional video gamers can earn more than $100,000 per year. Of course, the article explains that it's not all fun and (well...) games for the players. They are forced to live in "barracks" of the companies that sponsor them and are required to spend 12 hours a day banging away at their console games practicing for major contests (which are televised). Then, the pressure to win (especially when competing against amateurs) is almost unbearable for some. Seems a bit hard-core, but that's what you'd expect in just about any competitive situation. If the players can't take the pressure, then they probably shouldn't have gotten into the competition.

Realizing There's Broadband In South

Realizing There's Broadband In South
Korea
07/28/2004 06:22 AM
For quite a while, many in the broadband and wireless industries have known that the place to go look at the future of those technologies is South Korea (much more than Japan). It appears that the press is finally catching on. News.com has a detailed profile of the broadband situation in Korea, and pointing out some of the lessons the US can learn from the situation there (basically: build a faster network and get out of the way -- people will figure out how to use it, and use it well). Somewhat surprisingly, the article barely touches on what South Korea has been doing in the wireless space, but that's just as (if not, more) interesting. Maybe next time, when News.com has a collection of articles on wireless instead of broadband, they'll hit that point as well.

Stem cell breakthrough in South Korea

Stem cell breakthrough in South Korea 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Stem cell research is a controversial topic, at least when embryonic stem cells are involved. This week, Science.Ars looks at some developments in South Korean stem cell research.

I’m revisiting the topic again this week, following the news of a breakthrough by scientists from Seoul National University. Last year the group reported the creation (registration required) of an human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line using somatic cell nuclear transfer — in effect they replaced the nucleus in donated oocytes (unfertilized egg cells) with that of a somatic cell.

As is usual with this line of research, the development will raise all sorts of ethical questions.

Science.Ars also reports on the discovery of a new species of monkey, a positive development from the devastation of last December's tsunami, and more.
