Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
I've complained in the past about the annoyanc e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo, the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco over at CBS Marketwatch has noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is collecting public information. However, if the info was given to an individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.

All.info is a searchable directory of topics focused on web site credibility. Our directory provides searchers with additional info provided by the site’s producer. This information helps our searchers better find and evaluate sites. All.info also runs the popular search resource center, SearchEngines.com. Since June 2000, hundreds of thousands of users, search professionals and members of the media have relied on SearchEngines.com as a collection of top-quality information about searching.

All.info is the first search directory to tackle the issue of site credibility in a scalable system. Aside from a proprietary ranking algorithm, All.info uses the information provided by web site producers, who know most about their sites, to help users better find and assess the credibility of these web sites. When a professor assigns a paper, or when a manufacturer is looking for unbiased industry information, or a third-grader is trying to learn more about math, All.info will help identify which information would be most useful, relevant and credible.

Your Info (Right Or Wrong) Is Not Your
Own
03/23/2005 04:41 PM
Two separate pieces this morning highlight a number of points that have been popping up on Techdirt quite a bit over the past few weeks. The first is a summary (once again) of all of the various private data leaks/hacks/handouts/whatever that may have put your personal data at risk. To be honest, while it's getting a lot of attention this month, it's likely that this is all par for the course. It's just that the press has finally picked up on it. The article notes that, so far, the only thing Congress has done is try to make the punishment for identity theft higher -- which is an after the fact solution, that does little to push companies to be more secure with their your data. The article also notes, again, that none of these data leaks came via the internet, and there was nothing any indivi dual could have done to stop them. The second story concerns the fact that Choic ePoint has plenty of incorrect data about people -- and no way to request a change. It turns out (whooooops!) that's against the law. Of course, given their apparent inability to protect your data, perhaps it's good that they can't get your data correct. Maybe people should start purposely putting errors into these reports so they can track who's leaking the data.

apex_MP2000-small.jpg image

Companies like Apex Digital are some of my favorites to watch. Stuck for years as a huge retail producers but second-rate players in the electronics market, these companies start to do interesting things when they make their move toward legitimacy. Apex's first major move, the ApeXtreme home gaming console, is destined for failure -- with the possible exception of a healthy adoption by the PVR tweaking scene. But hold the Apex-branded phone! Here comes a Portable Media Player, the Apex MP-2000, a $400 device with a 20GB hard drive and 3.5-inch 320 by 260 screen that can play MPEG-4, DivX, Motion JPEG, and Windows Media 9 video. Plus it can encode video on the fly at VGA quality -- up to 40 hours in MPEG-4 and 80 hours in WMV9. Plus, for better or for worse, the unit can be upgraded to support future DRM schemes, meaning that any future media format should be playable. Apex might just pull something off after all.

As far as we know, these are the first pictures on the web of the Apex MP-2000, and since sharing is caring, we've provided a high-resolution version, as well (click the picture).

PD840_hi.jpg imageApex has added a nice looking 8.4-inch widescreen DVD player to their lineup, called the PD-840. It plays DVDs, music, all that good stuff, with a projected battery life of 2.5 hours -- not long enough for two movies, but probably just long enough for one. Although portable DVD players are the sort of product that has very limited appeal to me -- if I'm not watching them at home, they I'll probably be watching on a laptop -- I know some people, especially people with kids, get a lot of mileage out of them. My own family has chewed through at least two in the last couple of years keeping my young brother entertained.

Should be available late summer for around for (a too pricey) $325.

Apex Tells A Different Story On Arrested
Chairman
01/05/2005 03:32 AM
Last week, we noted (with surprise) the story that Apex Digital's chairman had been arreste d in China for failing to pay millions of dollars to certain vendors. Well, now, Apex has responded to the claims, suggesting that this is all part of their vendors' attem pt to change the terms of their agreements, and, in fact, that they've forced the imprisoned chairman to sign certain documents unfavorable to the company. As for the supposedly missing money, Apex says they've sent the checks regularly, but the company in question, Sichuan Changhong Electric, has never presented them to Apex's bank to cash.

Apex Digital Chairman Arrested In China
For Fraud
12/30/2004 04:39 PM
Earlier this year, we had a story noting that Apex Digital, known mainly as a distributor of insanely cheap Chinese-made consumer electronics, was doing amazingly well, and planning to move into the computer business as well. It appears, however, that the "amazingly well" part of the equation was helped along by, you know, not actually paying their vendors. Apex's chairman has now been arrested in China on fraud charges, following the news that many companies believe Apex owes them millions of dollars. And you wondered why those DVD players were so cheap?
