Lust And Love

Lust And Love 12/21/2003 12:16 AM
Why Are Love And Lust Always Talked About As Opposites? Even a much-respected philosopher like Simon Blackburn makes this essentially epistemological mistake. The horrific modern expression "in lust" is a further example. How can you lust after someone without loving them a little (or a lot) too? Or vice-(and the word vice is well applied)-versa? [More inside.]

I lust for a Roomba

I lust for a Roomba 02/10/2004 01:28 PM
I'm just listening to Helen Greiner's presentation of Roomba. She actually has one that she is running on the table, and the #etech -channel is filled with geeks declaring their instant love at the tiny little home robot.

Can't say I'm much different.

I seriously, seriously want one. Like now.

Update: Joi snapped a photo of me, relaxing outside :-)

Update2: I'm now a bit less enthusiastic. IRobot does in addition build the PackBot, which is a military bot. We were shown a cool video in which the PackBot? is thrown in through a window to a building, drives off the roof, and drives directly into a river; surviving all this stuff. It was apparently used during the Afghan war as well. It's just a matter of time before they strap it with guns.

Lust for Hats

Lust for Hats 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

Cutest Easter hat ever

My eyewear fetish is something I've always thought of as a compensatory tactic for my inability to have the more traditional shoe fetish due to my titanic 10-10 1/2[US] feet which could never look dainty no matter how stylish the footwear. My secret fetish is hats. I adore hats, but aside from the more practical winter coverings for my cranium I usually look, but don't buy. I always envied the Queen Mum for her abiility to wear the ugliest of hats without the slightest sign of self-consciousness. All those awful hats with matching ensembles paired with the royal smile and wave saying, "Fuck all the little people, I love my hat! I am a sexy beast!" I would have paid good money to see her wear a fuzzy, fringed pimpdaddy hat with gold capped teeth. I wonder what family did with all those hats she left behind and didn't get buried wearing.

This Easter peep hat [Hope Hat, Uudenmankatu] caught my eye and I had to stare at it for a brief while with lust. My usual internal dialogue is, "Would I wear that hat? Yes. Would I wear that hat outside the house? Hmmm....no." It's always the same unless the hat is black and doesn't attract attention. I used to wear a black bowler, but I got way too many smartass jerks asking me if it was Clockwork Orange day. Clearly they were uncivilised cretins who hadn't ever seen Emma Peel in The Avengers. But hats like this make me wish I had what the Queen Mum had in the hat hutzpah department. Of course, with a 7 3/4 hat size, the cute Easter peep hat wouldn't likely fit me any more than a cute pair of fashionable shoes would fit my Cunard sized feet, but we always desire most that which we cannot have or look good in...don't we?

And, for anyone who has ever enjoyed the marshmallowy goodness that are marshmallow peeps, it's Peeps Week time again with Dr. Fun. :)

JEFF MASSON
AND THE VIRTUE OF GENTLE
PERSUASION

JEFF MASSON
AND THE VIRTUE OF GENTLE
PERSUASION
01/22/2004 02:12 AM
moonIn his new book The Pig Who Sang to the Moon, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson continues the critical life's work he began with the groundbreaking When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals. Masson understands the importance of repetition in achieving something as enormous as changing an entire culture's belief system, and he is patient and dispassionate in doing so. Like his previous books, The Pig Who Sang to the Moon is a dense and methodical mix of scientific citations and compelling anecdotes in defence of his continuing thesis: that animals are not only intelligent, but also live rich and complex emotional lives. Previous books have dealt with animals in the wild and with pets, and the subject this time is the most difficult of all: Farm animals, which Masson correctly points out should more properly be called 'farmed animals'.

Masson understands how politically charged his subject is, and carefully avoids overstatement, provocative language or grim descriptions of factory farms that would raise defensive barriers. He is trying to move fence-sitters here -- potential allies in the farming community, social and political leaders, borderline vegetarians and other writers who intuitively sense there is something terribly wrong with raising animals in cramped, painful, mind-numbing, artificial quarters just so we can slaughter them in astronomical quantities to feed the never-ending explosion of human numbers. He'll cite a well-researched report or a respected scientist and follow up with a delightful, always positive, never confrontational story. He qualifies almost every statement he makes, and almost apologetically leads you to the obvious conclusion. He will not condemn our attitudes and actions, preferring instead to explain and understand them, and then gently suggest logical and compassionate alternatives. He explains the atrocities (my word, not his) that are committed against farmed animals by saying simply "it is in our own self-interest not to know them; it is easiest to disconnect from whom we are eating if we know nothing at all about them". Even his conclusion advocating a vegan diet and the eschewing of leather, wool and down products starts with the word if.

And to the reader who doubts what difference one person acting on that suggestion would make, he lists the number of animals spared suffering by a single human vegetarian in one lifetime: 6 cows, 22 pigs, 30 sheep, 800 chickens, 50 turkeys, 15 ducks, 12 geese, 7 rabbits, and a half a ton of fish. Masson confesses that he has not yet converted completely to a vegan diet, but explains how quickly the vegan alternatives to animal food products are improving in quality, taste and variety. Like me, he's getting there, urged forward, one step at a time, and he's likewise urging others on, one person at a time. The Pig Who Sang to the Moon is a charming and engaging book with an important message for all of us.

Latest Studies Say RIAA May Have
Declared Victory Too Soon

Latest Studies Say RIAA May Have
Declared Victory Too Soon
01/16/2004 01:03 PM
Just last week the recording industry was high-fiving each other following reports that file sharing was down. However, not everyone agreed with those findings - with many pointing out that it was based on a phone survey, where people are likely to lie about being involved in an activity they could get sued for. Now, other studies are coming out suggesting that it might be a bit early for the industry to declare victory. The latest study from NPD shows that after dropping for a few months, file trading is back on the upswing. Meanwhile, Business Week talks to two companies that actively monitor file sharing (both of whom work with the recording industry), and they indicate that file sharing isn't going away. BayTSP says that file sharing has only decreased about 10% from last summer (much less than other reports), and also notes that many people are simply ditching Kazaa for more advanced file sharing systems. Meanwhile, BigChampagne claims that file sharing is actually up in 2003, as compared to 2002. Now, both of these companies are dependent on file sharing continuing - as their money comes from monitoring those networks for the record labels - so there might be some bias. However, it seems pretty clear that the early victory dance coming from the RIAA may be a bit premature.
