This just in! Search Engines help find people, too! Reuters has apparently just figured out that you can google up old acquaintances. As for myself, I find that google has become less useful than these guys for people-searches. So, what is the most obscure thing/person you have searched for, and how did you find it?

The new MyDoom variant scans your HDD for domains (e.g. craphound.com), then hammers on search engines looking for valid email addresses at that domain (e.g., "GET /default.asp?lpv=1&loc=searchhp&tab=web&query=e-mail+examp le.com"). http://www.ari adne.ac.uk/issue40/search-engines/

People are of course aware that Google isn't the only search engine out there, by any manner or means, and although many people regard it as the biggest and the best, this certainly isn't the case for those organisations who decide that they want a share of the search engine market. Phil Bradley looks at some of the new search engines that have appeared, and will see how many of them make the grade. Reviewed are:

Advertisers Sue Paid Search Companies
For Click Fraud

Advertisers Sue Paid Search Companies
For Click Fraud
04/05/2005 02:16 PM
One of the biggest issues facing the paid search industry is the amount of "click fraud" that occurs. It's a well known problem, and many advertisers chalk up click fraud as an expense, just like retailers chalk up shoplifting as an expense. Many of the paid search companies will refund some money to advertisers when they discover click fraud, but apparently those advertisers don't think enough is being done. A group of advertisers has sued all the big names in paid search and are trying to get it turned into a class action suit. If the case does go ahead, it could represent serious problems for the paid search companies -- as it's tough for a court to force them to stop people from clicking fraudulently. Of course, the problems with click fraud tend to be more focused on contextual advertising sites, rather than search sites itself. On search sites, the main reason for click fraud is generally to drive up expenses of a competitor, depleting their advertising budget. On third party content sites, though, the incentive is often to make money for the content provider. If this case does actually get somewhere, it seems likely that some of the paid search/contextual ad network companies will start to shift away from pay-per-click to other performance metrics, such as impressions and pay-per-action.

...computing researchers have developed new search engines that can mine catalogs of three-dimensional objects, like airplane parts or architectural features.

All the users have to do is sketch what they're thinking of, and the search engines can produce comparable objects.

Most information junkies would be hard-pressed to name anything that has transformed their professional lives as much as Internet search engines have. The miraculous devices can take your hot topic of the day, scan millions of Web pages and in seconds bring back product announcements, research papers, the names of experts and more—things that would be difficult or impossible to find otherwise. But as powerful as they are, search engines have huge weaknesses. For example, a recent Google search on the word Linux took just 0.4 seconds, but it had 95 million hits. Too bad if the one you need is No. 10,000 on the list. But researchers are poised to revolutionize search technology over the next few years.

Microsoft : what is next for search
engines?
08/30/2004 03:44 PM
This week's edition of The Economist has an interesting piece in its technology section on search engines. Thankfully, not another critique of Google / its recent IPO, but at what we might expect of tomorrow’s search engines. The article talks about research, done by Microsoft, into search engines that can answer questions.

A very simplistic example of how the technology works is this. Imagine a search engine homepage with a text box, allowing you to pose any question - e.g. the question "When was Neowin founded?". The search engine computers would then take the phrase, break it down and manipulate it (in terms of structure, tense etc) and then run a search on that data. The search engine would then return a list of the results; more intelligent engines could discard many (e.g. "never" would be discarded) of the results and leave the users with a list of possible answers (e.g. 4).

The technology is still a prototype, and is currently called 'Ask MSR' (MS Research). Bink has a collection of links and papers by MS researchers on the topic. Technologies like these give search engines the edge, if, and it's a big if, they work well. Dr Brill, researcher working on the system, wants to develop something that might give a fifty word answer to your question (view his research paper - PDF | HTML). The Economist notes that the system works ~40% of the time; not bad, but still needing work.

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PM
Apparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will t reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out quit e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason to treat the ads differently.

Here's something for Friendster

Here's something for Friendster 01/22/2004 02:34 AM
Esther Dyson, queen of comedy.

I know I know - it is like poking a rattle snake with your foot. But I am feeling feisty this morning. Now that Esther Dyson doesn’t really have anything to say about anything (smart guy in her company is doing his own thing), she has decided that comedy is the next big thing.

Dyson got the biggest laugh by suggesting a business model for Sunnyvale-based Friendster, the popular social networking service and a company that has yet to collect any revenue from its users. Populated by lonely singles looking to line up dates, Friendster should start a personal gift registry, Dyson said. The bottom line would be: “If you want to date me, this is what you’ve got to buy me.” (San Jose Mercury News)

Yup, that’s a new business model, so new that every generation has been doing the same since Adam and …

The new Friendster

The new Friendster 02/05/2005 09:12 PM

SNSanal.jpgI've been waiting a whiele to see what happens with the new Friendster. So far - not much. But they do send this nifty little newsletter nowadays - which has the status of some of my friends in it.

What intrigues me about this - is how did they know which friends to tell me about? Those who have updated recently? Those who are 'important' in the blogosphere - or what?

The reason I'm curious is that if you look at these peeps below - you'll notice nobody less than danah boyd, Xeni Jardin, Tyler Ziemann, Justin Hall and Scott Rafer.

Not a bad selection of peeps. So I'd say there's something going on here - something that's determining who is 'important' in my life - or something like that. Cause Julia Lolita is not known in the blogspehere and Noah Glass is kind of but not that much. Julia is an all-star in the SF/BM/LaLa party scene and Noah used to live with me as a roomate.

Julia's company "Blood & Butter" productions has put on some of the best parties ever - some of them at my house (with Noah particiapting I may add.) So how did Friendster know how important Julia is to me? Email traffic? And Jason is a friend of Julia's - I barely know him. He's teh one man out in this elite list. Hmmm.

But I don't exchange email with Justin, Xeni or Scott on Friendster? So I'm curious just how this list was determined.
