The Loyal WS-Opposition

The Loyal WS-Opposition 09/19/2004 12:33 AM
In places that have Parliamentary systems, the majority party (or parties) form the Government, and the rest form the Opposition. In constitutional monarchies the jargon is “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.” The idea is, they Oppose the Government but are Loyal in that they promise not to lead a mob with pitchforks to string them up; and they stand ready to provide an alternative. When it comes to Web Services, that’s what I’d like to be: the loyal opposition...

Just How Loyal Are You To The Companies
That Provide Your Tech?

While there are plenty of different ways to judge a company's prospects, one interesting element to look at is how "loyal" buyers are. Of course, loyalty may be tough to judge, and simply buying from a company (even repeatedly) doesn't necessarily show loyalty -- as a buyer may end up buying regrettably because there's nothing else available. However, here's a study of corporate IT buyers, where the folks behind the study go out and talk to various buyers to get a real sense of where their loyalties lie, and it suggests which companies might be vulnerable on loyalty. While Dell, Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle scored well (almost all of which may surprise some people), Apple, Intel and PeopleSoft faired poorly (which, again, is likely to surprise people). Of course, more details would be useful in determining what the real issues are. Loyalty can be a function of a variety of things, but it's interesting to see so many often-criticized companies on the "good" list, and so many companies that have good reputations on the "bad" list.

I've been getting tons of angry email about something nice I said on Screensavers . I don't remember just what I said, but I apparently praised Tor Books for innovativeness with ebook publishing -- e.g., with Cory's books. This led angry fans of Baen Books to write to complain that Baen was far better than Tor. (One fan was so angry that he bought me a trial subscription to Baen -- just the sort of criticism I love best!). I apologize to Baen fans, for I certainly don't intend to criticize the amazingly innovative business model of Baen (which nicely mixes free and non, and strongly encourages new authors). And I respect greatly your loyalty. When's the last time a fan of Sony Records wrote to criticize praise of EMI? (Who was the last fan of Sony Records?)

Loving iLife

Loving iLife 03/06/2004 01:55 AM
Reviewing iLife 04, Matthew Fordahl writes for Associated Press, For me, the suite would be a bargain even at twice the price. Its newest addition is an addictive music-creation program. Called GarageBand, it is simple enough for those of us whove never touched a keyboard or strummed a guitar yet advanced enough to appeal to a polished practitioner. [Mar 1]

Review: iLife 04 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Assessing iLife 04, David Pogue writes in the New York Times, Each program in the updated suite (except iTunes) offers about a dozen enhancements. For example, the new iMovie offers video trimming with an undo feature right in the storyboard strip. The iDVD program introduces 20 new professional-looking templates for your DVD menu screens, and can now fit two hours of amazing-looking video onto a disc. For iPhoto 4, the chief improvement is speed, enough to handle 25,000 photos per collection without bogging down. But iLife 04 (for the Mac OS X operating system) also includes a new program called GarageBand. Its designed to let people with even the feeblest musical talent, or even musical interest, create professional-sounding digital recordings. [Jan 15]
