Gadget Overload

Gadget Overload 04/26/2004 04:07 PM
We've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets, but for many people, all we've experienced is the nee d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic (assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN) card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter being back at the hotel room."

xeni_jardin_mink.jpg imageEffervescent Bollywood advertisements, e-voting, and food-as-porn photoshop remixes. I didn't cherry-pick those three topics from Xeni Jardin's BoingBoing contributions to achieve some eclectic frisson -- those posts just happen to be her last three. They may be indicative, though, of Jardin's many tentacled exploration into dozens of subjects, not just as one of the four cornerstones of BoingBoing, but as a contributing writer for WIRED Magazine and on-air commentator for NPR's Day 2 Day radio program, as well as her duties as conference and art show organizer extraordinaire. Who better to ping with a packet of, "What's in your gadget bag?" (Am I getting good at these, or what? Thanks, Xeni!)

Sweet little Motorola V600. Fat 65k color screen. Bluetooth. Built-in VGA cam with zoom. I'm co-curating "SENT," the first major exhibit of phonecam art in the US. As the project's sponsor, Motorola provided V600s for each of the Mark Cuban, Megan Mullally, Randal Kleiser, Penelope Spheeris, Weird Al Yankovic). We also got a batch of pre-release V710s which are sweet to the tenth power, but carrier availability isn't here just yet.

Gadget of the Week: inMotion 12/06/2003 09:44 AM
What do you get for someone who carries 10,000 songs wherever they go? Why, a portable sound system of course. Until recently, there were very few on-the-go options for using an iPod without headphones: Cassette adapters, wireless transmitters or stereo cables allowed the iPod to play through most home receivers, if such a device was available away from home; several smaller-stature computer speakers were offered, though none offered much in the way of portability; and the best...

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use 09/09/2004 02:54 PM

If the details in a CNet article are correct, Microsoft's Longhorn will include tools needed(?) by IT managers to put the clamps on people using various gadgets to their work PC's.

Flash drives, iPods, and other doodads — both wired and wireless — that are able to store large amounts of data can be a security risk to the company; unscrupulous employees can use them to load up lots of sensitive documents and carry them out in a pocket. There's also the danger of such devices either accidentally or intentionally introducing viruses and other malicious software into a network.

Companies have been slow to react to the threat posed by digital storage devices in general. It's one that companies have turned a blind eye to for a very long time. If you think back, it used to be that stealing significant secrets was difficult because it was hard to get away with that much paper.

(for some reason I had a flash of Sandy Berger shoving paper in his pants just now!)

Many government agencies and the US military have already banned the on-duty use of some such devices, and many private businesses are following suit. But banning an item and being able to prevent its use are two different things.

Too bad the IT world has to wait for Longhorn to do this; a lot of pilfering can happen between now and then. But I'm sure there are 3rd party developers that are working on something like this as we speak, if they're not out already.

Gadget Magazine Bubble

Gadget Magazine Bubble 06/07/2004 09:06 AM

Om Malik picked up an issue of Primedia's Connected magazine and was so disgusted by its lack of good gadget news and insight that he did what no other angry internet writer would dare to do -- he wrote a blog entry. Fortunately, Om knows what he's talking about, especially when he compliments me and my online colleagues by claiming that a simple aggregation of a few blogs collectively kicks the ass of almost any dead tree magazine around. What's more useful to you: publications with 90 day lead times or blogs that measure scoop time by the minute? Thank god there are a few magazines out there doing it right. I was pleasantly surprised by Mobile PC Magazine's recent laptop comparison issue that used the paper format to show life-sized pictures of each notebook's keyboard -- exactly the sort of thing that leverages (synergizes!) the strengths of the paper medium. But for up to the minute news, what's the point? The internet wounded magazines years ago, and blogs have refined the technique to a deadly art.

(P.S. Magazine editors, I am available for freelance.)

Gadget of the week: EyeTV 01/03/2004 11:50 AM
While still in its infancy, elgato’s EyeTV has seen more updates in a year-and-a-half than most products see in their entire lifespan. With a constant stream of substantial releases to its companion software, EyeTV has turned from a quirky luxury item into a flawless, must-have Mac gadget; with each upgrade, the hardware’s intrinsic value has increasingly at a near-exponential pace, eclipsing most everything in its path and forever raising the bar for Digital Video Recorders. What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis?

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis? 08/31/2004 07:44 AM

warren_ellis.jpg imageWarren Ellis single-handedly reignited my love of funny books with his seminal not-near-enough-future comic Transmetropolitan. Does he need any more introduction than that? Currently working on a novel (without pretty pictures!) and the conversion of the Global Frequency books into a TV series, Warren dashed out his choices for what he includes in his Gadget Bag in typical style:

You just caught me. I'm off to Atlanta in 36 hours or so; jumping from British Summer Time to Eastern Daylight Time for something called Dragon*Con, where I'm a special guest (and also cultivating the Freak Vote in prep for my first prose novel, published next summer).

I travel light. I'm the guy whose bag hits the luggage carousel last. I'm the guy who's still there at three in the morning in an empty hall, with tumbleweed blowing past, sitting there next to horse skeletons and starving vultures, waiting for the airport workers to finish their smack break and grub around in the back of the airplane for my bag. Which usually comes out looking like they've been having group sex on it. So, five or six years ago, I decided that if it didn't fit into a carry-on bag, I wasn't taking it.
