Selling snowballs in a blizzard

Selling snowballs in a blizzard 12/11/2003 10:46 PM
During last week's NYC snowstorm, an entrepreneur set up shop in Times Square, selling snowballs for $1/pop.
The young man was Gilberto Triplitt, a 28-year-old unemployed artist from Queens who attended LaGuardia High School and worked in a furniture store until it closed in the post-Sept. 11 downturn. He went into the snowball business Monday afternoon on Prince St. in SoHo. He reported selling six in 2-1/2 hours.

"It's really easy to sell them," he said, to a reporter's surprise.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the biggest U.S. pension fund, said it voted against a Microsoft Corp. proposal that would let the company pay workers with stock instead of options. The fund also opposed the makeup of the board's audit committee. Calpers withheld votes for directors on Microsoft's three-member audit committee because the company authorized its auditor, Deloitte & Touche LLP, to perform other services, spokesman Brad Pacheco said.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around

Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around 12/19/2004 02:57 PM

Yeah, I know. What's new about that?

MS lawyers jumped all over the administrators of digital.forest demanding that they immediately shut down the MacSlash site because someone posted what appeared to be a valid Longhorn serial number in a comment to a post there. (Story here.) From the logs, the MacSlash guys figured that that comment was accessed exactly once in the eight months it was there. By MSN's own search bot.

Chuck Goolsbee, head geek at digital.forest, responded to the hounds:

A short lesson in human nature... Try asking nicely. I realize that owners of intellectual property feel the need to enter into discussions with lawyers blazing, but I know from long experience that attack begets defence, whereas courtesy begets respect. If you look at this situation objectively, I'm sure you will realize that the site owners have not acted in any malicious way. The content in question was posted to the bulletin board by some anonymous user. So, rather than using terms like "Demand for Immediate Take-Down" why don't you try something like "Please remove copyright infringing content".

You will likely be amazed at how much better it works.

(I've always liked that Chuck!)

Of course, Ben from MacSlash edited the serial number out of the comment as soon as he realized it was there. The funny thing is that now that it's gone from MacSlash, it can still be seen in Google's cach e of the page. I wonder how many people have seen it now.

The difference between throwing a bullet

The difference between throwing a bullet
and shooting it out of a gun
05/18/2004 01:24 AM

I've started trying to exercise more regularly for the past couple weeks, going for a 12 mile, hilly bike ride 3 times a week. Today I did my ride with a decent average speed and finished it in the shortest time yet. The loop I ride has a couple 10% grades in it and I do about 250ft of climbing through it. I was walking around the house today feeling pretty cocky about my progress when I sat down to watch one of my current favorite shows, The Lance Chronicles.

On tonight's episode they followed Lance Armstrong through his european training. One of his regular rides was a 4 1/2 hour, 30 mile climb from the flats high into the mountains, going straight up. It turns out he climbs over 13,000ft in that single ride. When I was in marathon shape, I did a few hikes where I would gain about 6,000ft in a single day from basecamp to summit, and Lance is doing more than twice that. As a training ride.

I'm thinking he's a shoe-in for this year's Tour.

Man Angry At Mobile Phone Service,
Starts Throwing Phones
05/14/2004 03:14 PM
These days, with things like number portability around, if you don't really like your mobile phone provider, you can simply change providers. Apparently, that wasn't what a man in North Dakota wanted, though. He went to the local Verizon Wireless store, pissed off about something, and when yelling at employees (his original intention) didn't satisfy him, he started to fling mobile phones around the store causing $2,000 worth of damages and injuring (not badly) an employee. Of course, you have to wonder about his claim that he only intended to yell at employees. Before he started his fling fest he apparently took off his shirt (?!?) and put on safety goggles. Amusingly, this was done at a Verizon Wireless store - and Verizon Wireless tends to get some of the best marks for customer service.

...Just a bit under the weather.

Our son got a bad cold last week and gave it to our daughter.  Nothing more serious, according to the doctor.  Since Esther is only one month old, though, anything is a cause for concern.

So that's my current excuse for the lack of blogging lately.  That, and something more positive -- working hard on the next Supernova, which will be June 24-25 in Santa Clara.  I'm already getting excited, and we're five months away!

Harry Potter Movie Reworked with a Downloadable Soundtrack

"Wizard People, Dear Reader is a remix of the first Harry Potter movie. It's a special soundtrack to the movie made by artist Brad Neely that recasts the story and tone of the flick. The idea is to buy the DVD and play the soundtrack (which is a free download) alongside of it.

With Mr. Neely's gravelly narration, the movie's tone shifts into darkly comic, pop-culture-savvy territory. Hagrid, Harry Potter's giant, hairy friend, becomes Hagar, the Horrible, and Harry's fat cousin becomes Roast Beefy. As imagined by Mr. Neely, the three main characters are child alcoholics with a penchant for cognac, the magical ballgame Quidditch takes on homoerotic overtones, and Harry is prone to delivering hyper-dramatic monologues. 'I am a destroyer of worlds,' bellows Mr. Neely at one point, sending laughter reverberating through the warehouse Friday night. 'I am Harry' expletive "Potter!"
