business vs residential users

business vs residential users 08/09/2004 11:32 AM

Th ese smart words by Elliot Noss [via Ba g and Baggage]

One of the mistakes I find service providers make on a regular basis is drawing a bright yellow line between home and business users.

Two caveats to this post. First, in many markets this makes great sense. If you are selling furniture you better segment between home and business users. If you are a general contractor same thing.

Second, with respect to Internet services (access, hosting, mail, domain names, etc.) there is some segmentation necessary for larger "small businesses". Here think about the same type of businesses that used to be serviced by Novell's army of Netware consultants. Businesses with usually 50 < employees < 500. They do have some (but not all) unique needs.

There are three points I want to make here. First, for many small businesses their needs are identical to those of home users. A little hosting, a little mail and access with a domain name to keep it all easy to find and use. Think about a $25-$75/month bundle of services all in.

They both want it to work ALWAYS and both are unwilling to accept less (nor should they). And for every "mission critical" business email or website there is a timely romantic email or little league schedule on a website that MUST be available now. If stuff isn't working people get mad and may find an alternative supplier.

Both groups need help using these services. They are equally clueless and equally in need of your fine counsel.

Second, a huge and growing segment of the population has NO difference between work and home. They work at home. Sometimes they relax during working hours. Sometimes they work during what would normally NOT be working hours. These people, SOHO, need all the services they need all the time. You cannot market to them separately. This segment is also the wave of the future.

The last point I would make here is that having a residential base usually leads to business accounts. Back in the day we (a long load but a nice trip down memory lane for me) would regularly get to bid on business against the "business-focused" ISPs (at the time usually Netcom Canada and PSI) because we were providing dialup to the President or decision-maker of the business. We usually got the account. These segments feed each other.

The point I am trying to make here is for the vast majority of potential customers there is no need to differentiate between business and residential users and most distinctions ("higher level of service") are artificial anyway.

It is the size of the bundle, not where you use it.

Customers who choose the new service also receive download speeds as fast as 500kbps, limited VPN capabilities, 10 free e-mail accounts, free basic Web hosting and a static IP address for an extra US$4.99 per month. Pricing is $699.99 for the complete hardware package, which includes the satellite dish and modem, and a one-year contract with a $89.99 per month fee or a three-year contract that drops to $79.99 per month in the second year and $69.99 per month in the third year. Xten has announced its newest Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SoftPhone, eyebeam, which, like other SoftPhone software previously released by the company, will turn your Mac into a phone that can place and receive calls via Voice-Over IP (VoIP), a protocol that carries voice data over the Internet. An OEM version of the company's X-PRO SIP SoftPhone was just made available to Vonage subscribers who use Mac OS X, as reported by MacCentral on Thursday. eyeBeam SoftPhone will offer H.263 and H.264 IP video conferencing, CDMA cellular network support and such telephony features as instant messaging and encryption. Xten is currently demonstrating the new product at Supercomm 2004 and will soon make a Beta release available to select partners, with the commercial roll-out slated for October. eyeBeam will be Mac OS X compatible, but the company hasn't released system requirements and pricing yet, nor had it placed a product page on its Web site as MacCentral posted this article.

Eyebeam fellowship

Eyebeam fellowship 03/22/2005 03:34 PM

When I started thinking about taking kottke.org full-time, one of the things I wanted to do was not work out of my apartment most of the time. But office/work space in NYC is expensive and I figured I wouldn't have room in the budget for it. There was also the matter of the proper environment. I just didn't want to exchange working alone in my apartment for working alone in an office. A smallish workplace with like-minded folks focused on similar projects was my goal.

So, I'm pleased to report that starting sometime later this month, I will be an Eyebeam R&D Senior Fellow for the next year or so. Eyebeam aims to be a center for art and technology and with recent projects like Fundrace, ForwardTrack, and ReBlog, there's quite a bit of overlap in what Eyebeam and I are interested in. They are not supporting me financially and I won't be officially working on any projects for them, but I will be working in their new R&D space in Chelsea. The hope is I'll not only have a physical place to work but that both parties will benefit from my presence in that space. That is, if some of their chocolate gets into my peanut butter (and vice versa), that would be a good thing.

So thanks to Eyebeam for their support of my personal digital exploration and am looking forward to working with the other researchers, artists, and fellows. Here's their post on the subject.

It is the time for changes, or at least that is what folks at Uniqall do think about it. Few days ago Uniqall made available for free download the first public beta of its flagship Gridborg 1.0 software that is supposed to displace expensive telephony boards from theirs well entrenched positions within computer telephony solutions. Telephony R.I.P.?

Telephony R.I.P.? 01/07/2004 03:22 PM
I have an iSight and a nice new Mac laptop. I also have a beat-up old Mac and a decent Canon videocam that I don’t use that much, not having (yet) developed videographer’s reflexes. Anyhow, the Canon has firewire output, so I plugged that into the old Mac and what do you know, it works just fine with iChat AV. So we put the old Mac and the Canon with a little tripod on a desk in a quiet but wired area upstairs and it’s a free videophone to anywhere in the world. Restating for emphasis: whenever I’m anywhere in the world and have an Internet connection, I can have a free videophone call home, that goes on as long as I need to and nobody’s counting minutes or running up a phone bill. Let’s see; free telephone with video, or pay-for-it telephone with no picture. Costly and voice-only, or free with a picture. I think this is what an inflexion point smells like.

Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony

Vonage, 2nd try for IP telephony 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Last summer I switched to lingo.com, an IP phone service that proved to be cheap but unreliable.  Starting last week Lingo failed altogether and their tech support folks (available only by phone, which is kind of irksome) failed to call back, so I ordered Vonage, which is the same $25/month but does not include Western Europe in its unlimited calling region and has higher international rates.

Here's how Vonage has worked...

  • Vonage sends you a brand-new Linksys broadband router with included IP phone jacks and three Ethernet jacks; if you were relying on your old router for 802.11b or to use as an 8-port hub you may have to buy some new networking gear
  • the customer service Web site is very slow and about 25% of the time page requests produce an error page with a "try again later" instruction
  • tech support is available through a form on their Web site; this form asks for your name, phone number, account number, etc., even though you've already logged in and it should have all of his info as part of your account profile
  • tech support via phone results in a "we're experiencing an unsually high volume of calls; try again later"; customer service (billing, etc.) can be reached after a 15-minute wait in queue
  • they say that they never received my FAXed letter of authorization to transfer my old number from Lingo and want it refaxed
  • when set to simultaneously ring my cell phone Vonage does ring the cell but I can't hear callers (they can hear me though)

They say that it will take two months for them to transfer the phone number from Lingo, so I'll have to pay $25/month to Lingo for forwarding until that happens.

[Update:  I believe that I unfairly maligned Vonage in regards to not being able to hear callers on calls simultaneously rung to my cell phone.  It turns out that it is my PalmOne Treo flaking out on the very day that I installed Vonage!  This makes Treo #10 that has failed, I think.  It lasted about two months, just like the others.  Anyone have a suggestion for a GSM phone that will do a calendar and contacts sync with Microsoft Outlook?]

[Dec 3 Update:  When voicemail is pending, the Vonage system fails to change the dial tone.  A second try to reach technical support (at 1:30 pm Eastern time) resulted in the same "we're too busy to talk to anyone" recording.  The voice quality of calls is somewhat low, with some constant static.]
