12/17/2004 06:31 PMJoi Ito and Jim Moore are leading a discussion of what could be in a
"manifesto for a better global conversation." The first comment is
that generally we care about our families and towns before we get to
worrying about the world. Alex Steffen from WorldChanging says that
our goal should be to expand our notion of family. Ethan says that we
should start from the common ground: All of us are trying to reach out
beyond where we are. The conversation meanders a bit into more
abstract topics. (I am guilty of contributing to it.) Ethan slaps it

AUDIOBLOGGING MANIFESTO: This is an awfully good and funny bit of
writing (and oration — here's the MP3 version so
you can hear the irony...). It's an argument against audioblogging,
from both a practical and philosophical point-of-view.
Ask yourself — is the key to making your site more
interesting really to add rich media? Or is it possible that if you
took more care in your writing, said something passionate,
grammatical, interesting, and pleasant to read, it would actually make
more of a difference? [...]
Just because you're going to be able to do a real-time three
dimensional high-definition interactive virtual reality fly-through of
the inside of your cat - does that mean you should? Does that mean it
belongs on your website? This is not the legacy we want to leave! So
stop the ridiculous self indulgence, and shut up and write.
He makes a great point. I don't have time to sit and listen to
someone talk. I like to read, not listen so much. (Also, note the
not-so-subtle humor of the speaker spelling out every URL, down to the
last colon, slash, dot, and capital letter. The length of Winer's
Harvard URL almost makes you squirm listening to him.)
When I first logged on in 1996, one of the first great debates I
was witness to on the original MSN (of which I was a beta tester,
incidentally), was between people discussing what the next measure of
communication greatness was going to be.
Was the fact that almost everything on the Net was written (then,
anyway) detract from the great orators and give more power to the
great writers? Will the tongue-tied be imbued with more power since
writing is the great equalizer of the Internet? Who knows?
An absolute classic
New Yorker cartoon shows a dog sitting in front of a computer
talking to another dog: "On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog."
Well, not until you start audio and videoblogging, anyway.

UserLinux manifesto
12/10/2003 09:04 PMBruce Perens updated the
UserLinux manifesto;
now it's even worse than it appears. "It is not an attempt to produce
a 'Linux for Grandma', but is usable by the millions of people with
the technical skill to run GNU/Linux systems at home, many of whom
do so to facilitate their business or employment. Of course we'll
take advantage of improvements in user friendliness as they are
developed, however it's not our intent to lead their development."
As far as I can tell, they're not planning to develop anything.

The return of the manifesto
The return of the manifesto
08/17/2004 09:17 AMA new site's recently launched called ChangeThis which hopes to,
"challenge the way ideas are created and spread." They propose to do
this by creating and disseminating manifestos on various topics of
interest and importance.
We're betting that a significant portion of the population wants to
hear thoughtful, rational, constructive arguments about important
issues. We're certain that the best of these manifestos will spread,
hand to hand, person to person, until these manifestos have reached a
critical mass and actually changed the tone and substance of our
debate.
I've been a fan of manifestos for a long time, and Kill Your Children
(about the dangers of sugar) was very interesting. But I can't help
but wonder why all the manifestos they offer are Adobe PDF files. They
certainly look beautiful -- nice colors and font treatments -- but
they're kind of a pain because you have to download them and launch
another program to view them.
It seems to me that if the goal is to spread the manifestos, they
should be presented in the easiest-to-spread manner possible, like
plain text or HTML. Great manifestos of the past (Communist,
Cluetrain) were about substance. They didn't look great, but they
spread like crazy. That's not to say a nice looking manifesto won't
also spread, of course, but I believe they won't spread as effectively
because of the additional hurdles to read and distribute them. All
told, I still look forward to seeing how it progresses and what topics
they chose to address. It's an optimistic endeavor, and I love
optimistic endeavors! [via evhead]

A Manifesto for Collaborative Tools
04/09/2004 04:11 PMEugene Kim ias at it again. About once a year (it seems like
it's always in May) Eugene Kim puts out another white paper.
This year it's on "A
Manifesto for Collaborative Tools". Looks pretty good.
Reminds me of my own rants on "the New Kinds of Tools." Hasn't anybody told Eugene
that you're NOT supposed to use the evil T word. Doesn't Eugene
know that nobody will fund tools? Ask any VC.
Besides that - I see the joyous hands of one Danny Ayers all over this white
paper. Once somebody starts talking about graphs, rdf and the
semantic web - you Danny is around someplace.
And speaking of esoteric research - I'm still getting good vibes
from that Microsoft Social Computing thingie from last week.
Needless to say, I'm still waiting to get invited into Wallop.
But I did get to see Robert Scoble and Lenn Pryor sneak me Channel
9.
But back to Eugene and Blue Oxen. There's nothing he's saying that
I don't agree with. I just wish he'd get more specific.
Screen shots, Mockups, Design guidelines, Wireframes.
APIs. Schemas. We need more Schemas!
I wonder if Blue Oxen is still getting money from Pierre
whats-his-name. Maybe one day he'll discover what we're up
to.
Somebody better.

Cory Doctorow:
Earthlink has released a new file-sharing tool based on SIP, the
protocol underlying Voice Over IP and other systems for peer-to-peer
connectivity. What's coolest about this is the manifesto they posted
along with it:
EarthLink believes an open Internet is a good Internet. An open
Internet means users have full end-to-end connectivity to say to each
other whatever it is they say, be that voice, video, or other data
exchanges, without the help of mediating servers in the middle
whenever possible. We believe that if peer-to-peer flourishes, the
Internet flourishes. SIPshare helps spread the word that SIP is more
than a powerful voice over IP enabler --- much more. SIP is a protocol
that enables peer-to-peer in a standards-based way.

Manifesto for the Reputation Society
Manifesto for the Reputation Society
07/22/2004 06:18 AMManifesto for the Reputation Society by Hassan Masum and
Yi-Cheng Zhanghttp://firstmonda
y.org/issues/issue9_7/masum/Abstract
Information
overload, challenges of evaluating quality, and the opportunity to
benefit from experiences of others have spurred the development of
reputation systems. Most Internet sites which mediate between large
numbers of people use some form of reputation mechanism: Slashdot,
eBay, ePinions, Amazon, and Google all make use of collaborative
filtering, recommender systems, or shared judgements of quality. But
we suggest the potential utility of reputation services is far
greater, touching nearly every aspect of society. By leveraging our
limited and local human judgement power with collective networked
filtering, it is possible to promote an interconnected ecology of
socially beneficial reputation systems — to restrain the baser side
of human nature, while unleashing positive social changes and enabling
the realization of ever higher goals.

increases our necessary capital investments and our commitments in
time dealing with converting, storing, and uploading the content we
create. We need to charge appropriately for it, especially as
antiquated "day rates" have stagnated relative to the rate of
inflation.
