At CA, subscription license revenue generated about 45% of the company's $3.1 billion in fiscal 2003 revenues, with about another 38% coming from maintenance and royalties. CA's Unicenter product is a market leader in systems management software, running neck-and-neck with that of International Business Machines Corp. Three Vital FXCop Rules

Three Vital FXCop Rules 09/10/2004 01:57 AM
In the June 2004 installment of the Bugslayer column, I introduced the amazing FxCop, which analyzes your .NET assemblies for errors and problems based on code that violates the .NET Design Guidelines. This month I'll continue my discussion of building useful and advanced rules that will ensure you're writing the best .NET code possible. I'll assume that you've used FxCop extensively and that you've read the June 2004 Bugslayer column so that you have the basics of rule development under your belt. For this column, I'm going to dive deeper into building rules, concentrating on those that work directly with the Microsoft® intermediate language (MSIL) instructions in your methods. But first, I think it's best to describe the three rules I developed so you can follow what I did to build them.

Speakeasy Going Naked With Their DSL --
Who Needs A Phone Company?

Speakeasy Going Naked With Their DSL --
Who Needs A Phone Company?
07/01/2004 06:37 PM
Speakeasy, continuing to cement their reputation as the customer-friendly broadband service provider, is apparently getting ready to announce a nationwide "naked DSL" offering that won't require a local phone line. It won't be cheap, but that seems to be the price of having a DSL provider that really tries to give customers what they want. In this case, that's the ability to have DSL without a local phone line. The company reports that many of their subscribers use mobile phones instead, and only have a local phone line so they can get DSL. Also, with an increasing number of people replacing landlines with VoIP, there's simply less need for a true local phone line. However, as the Broadband Reports article points out, this may necessitate a truck roll for installation, making it a bit more cumbersome and costly. It's still surprising that other broadband providers haven't started targeting the same audience. Speakeasy has shown that they've been able to get plenty of business, while charging something of a premium to let customers do what they want with the connection, including running servers or sharing their connection via WiFi.

Verizon Finally Goes Naked

Verizon Finally Goes Naked 04/18/2005 06:48 PM
Despite promising it ages ago and then delay ing it repeatedly for reasons that didn't really make much sense, it looks like Verizon is finally offering "naked DSL" in the northeast. That means customers will be able to get DSL without getting the corresponding local telephone line. Gee, you think this has anything to do with Verizon finally getting around to offering a real VoIP service to go with that DSL? While there was a big ruckus over the FCC saying states can't require naked DSL, it's reasonable to expect both SBC and BellSouth to eventually jump on the naked DSL bandwagon when they have real VoIP offerings as well. For SBC, that may be when they close the deal to buy AT&T. For BellSouth... who knows. Considering they were really the first major telco to exper iment with VoIP they certainly are taking their sweet time offering it for real. Of course, you have to wonder what Verizon's CEO is going to have to say about this offering, considering he seems to think that customers who actually want decent, reasonable service are a problem.

Speakeasy to Build WiMax Network

Speakeasy to Build WiMax Network 08/27/2004 05:09 PM
Speakeasy received an investment from Intel to help it build a WiMax network: The ISP, based in Seattle, hopes to have a network in place during the second half of next year but it's not clear where. Speakeasy's CEO says here that the company turns away 30 percent of potential customers because they can't be served by its DSL partners. Owning and operating a WiMax network would be a big change for Speakeasy, which today resells DSL from Covad. But WiMax was made for a company like Speakeasy that has always been on the cutting edge of offering new services. The company currently encourages customers to share their connections via Wi-Fi and will even handle billing so that multiple customers can share a single connection. Speakeasy is technically savvy enough to build and use a WiMax network and the company understands how much it can grow its customer base by extending its service area....

The WSJ reports on a service in the Czech Republic that lets users sell their Wi-Fi connections to their neighbors (link good for seven days): This offering isn't as good as a similar one from WideNet and Wia in the Czech Republic which will do the billing for customers. The WSJ article covers a company called CzFree.net which requires customers to buy over $800 worth of gear and then allows them to sell connections to their neighbors. There is no mention of CzFree.net handling the billing, which I think is pretty key. I wouldn't want to have to deal with trying to make my neighbors pay me for something. Also, it doesn't appear that CzFree.net has a deal with a landline broadband provider, like WideNet does, which makes the legality of reselling connections questionable....
