entertainment giant Sony's own turf. The tiny white machine is
catching on as a fashion statement and turning into a cultural icon in
Japan, much the same way it won a fanatic following in the United
States. Although Apple doesn't release regional sales figures, six of
the top eight selling music players in Japan are iPod models,

07/27/2004 11:13 AMReuters reports
a deal between Apple and Motorola to bring
iTunes-like capability to mobile phones. Steve Jobs is quoted as
saying, "Wouldn't it be great if you could take a dozen of your
favorite songs with you on your phone. We thought it would be great if
together Motorola and Apple could give them (consumers) a small taste
of what this digital music revolution is about."
Many of us have already done this. I do it every time I travel with my
Treo 600 phone, as I noted in
this column a few days ago. Except I have an
advantage: I'm using MP3 files, which aren't subjected to Apple's
version of Digital Restrictions Management that prevent me from using
what I've purchased the way I want to use it.
Most phones will soon have enough onboard memory for this kind of
thing. Users want access to their music, but they don't want DRM speed
bumps. I hope Apple and Motorola don't build them in.

iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
01/05/2005 10:30 PMWell, this should be interesting. An "unhappy" iTunes user is now
suing Apple for antitrust
violations, claiming that they broke antitrust laws by only
allowing their music to play on iPods -- blocking out other music
players from the market. It's unlikely that he'll win the lawsuit,
and honestly, it sounds more like a setup by an Apple competitor than
just some individual who feels wronged. The guy in question says he
was "forced" to buy an iPod in order to make use of the music he
bought on iTunes, but the courts will likely point out that he could
have gone to a competing online music store. Of course, what this
really highlights is how some of these copy protection issues are
building fragmented worlds. How would people react if the CDs they
bought at Tower Records could only play on Tower-branded radios?
Thanks to the way the industry views intellectual property online, the
end result is a lot of competing separate worlds, which actively
discourages use.
