NewsGator: Beyond the Aggregator
NewsGator: Beyond the Aggregator
07/03/2004 09:23 PM
Why Did We Invest in NewsGator?: Here's a post from a venture
capitalist about why he invested in NewsGator.
The misperception is that NewsGator is only an Outlook plug-in.
While the most popular product from NewsGator is currently their
Outlook-based aggregator, what really turned us on when we dug into
NewsGator as a potential investment is NewsGator Online Services
(NGOS).
Greg Reinacker's vision is much broader than simply an RSS
aggregator - his goal is to provide RSS content on any device.
NewsGator currently provides clients for Outlook, the Web, POP email,
mobile devices (web-based and wap), and Microsoft Media Center (how
cool is it to get an RSS feed on your TV?).
He makes a good point — NewsGator has really extended past
Outlook. They started with that, and the Outlook plug-in is what
they're most well-known for, but I just wrapped up 30 days with Newsgator Online Services
(NOS), and I can tell you that they've deftly transcended the
aggregator.
While working with NOS, I got the...feeling, that news and
information was just out there, everywhere, and it was up to me how I
wanted to receive it. They have options to push information to about
any device, on any platform. I've never felt more saturated by news
in my life than during those 30 days.
Information was everywhere — so much so that I stopped
thinking in terms of this aggreagtor or that protocol. I was just
swimming in information, and the method in which I chose to receive it
was almost incidental. Petty, even.

NewsGator and Security
NewsGator and Security
03/13/2003 10:23 AMThere have been a couple of posts (
here
and
here)
talking about alleged security vulnerabilities in NewsGator and other
news aggregators. The first post supposedly describes a way to have a
news post contain an Outlook "virus" that will send an email to people
in your address book; the second shows a RSS file containing script
which could be annoying or malicious to a user.
As part of our
commitment to our customers, we are addressing these concerns here
immediately before they get blown out of proportion.
First,
regarding the "virus" which could send messages to people in your
address list. The technique described in the post, with code similar
to that demonstrated, will not actually work on default installations
of NewsGator with Outlook 2000 or 2002. In order to make the code
work, the user must have edited the applicable security zone settings
to allow scripting of ActiveX controls not marked as safe. If this
setting was indeed changed, the vulnerability would exist not just in
NewsGator/Outlook, but for browsing in Internet Explorer as
well.
Second, regarding the demonstrated ways to execute
javascript code placed within a news post. The javascript in question
will not execute at all when running NewsGator on Outlook 2002 with
the default settings. When running NewsGator on Outlook 2000, the
javascript may indeed execute, just as it would for HTML e-mail
messages. It is easy to correct this if you wish; you simply need to
change the IE security zone used for HTML messages in Outlook 2000 to
be the "Restricted" zone. For help with this, refer to
this article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. By default, Outlook
2002 displays all HTML messages in the Restricted zone, so it is not
vulnerable to this problem.
To summarize, NewsGator running on
Outlook 2002 is not vulnerable to any of the problems mentioned. With
Outlook 2000, it is easy to change settings to eliminate any possible
problems as well.
NewsGator 1.0 Released
NewsGator 1.0 Released
03/13/2003 10:23 AMHighlands Ranch, CO - February 24, 2003 - Reinacker &
Associates, Inc. has released NewsGator 1.0, a news aggregator for
Microsoft Outlook. NewsGator retrieves news from multiple sources such
as weblogs and news sites that support the RSS syndication format, and
integrates the news items into Outlook folders.
News aggregators such as NewsGator are becoming more mainstream as
more sites syndicate their content, and are changing the way people
view the web. There are thousands of weblogs alone, with content
covering nearly every subject area. "NewsGator has had a huge positive
impact on my web experience," said Adam Howitt from Biolab, Inc.
Other tools on the market require users to learn to use a new
application to read weblogs and news articles; NewsGator leverages the
experience many users already have with Microsoft Outlook. "Outlook
integration is a killer feature," said George Young, Tulane
University. "To be able to view weblog posts in the same application
as my e-mail is fantastic." By allowing these users to leverage the
powerful organizational features of Outlook in new ways, NewsGator
enhances their web experience.
NewsGator is also the natural choice for companies starting to
deploy weblogs internally on their intranets. Since Outlook is the de
facto standard email application within many companies, it's an easy
decision to read the syndicated weblog feeds inside of Outlook as
well.
NewsGator also includes the "NewsPage", which is a single page
summarizing all of the unread posts in your news folders. It provides
a quick, at-a-glance view of your latest news with a single click.
NewsGator 1.0 is available immediately. Pricing is $29 (US) per
copy with quantity discounts available.

NewsGator is NOT "Gator"
NewsGator is NOT "Gator"
06/17/2005 07:17 PMShortly after I announced that NewsG
ator had acquired my company, I started seeing comments from
people wondering whether NewsGator was related to the "Gator" spyware
company (now known as "Claria"). The answer, of course, is
NO (you don't really think I'd join a spyware
company, do you?).
NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker wrote
about this problem a few months ago, and wondered whether a name
change was in order to prevent the unintended association. But
renaming a company isn't the simplest thing to do, and even if the
rename took place, people would still refer to us as "the former
NewsGator company," defeating the purpose.
Funny thing is, I had a simil
ar post in my own blog last month, related to some people taking
offense to the "demon" part of FeedDemon's name. Given the problems
with both names, I think it's safe to say that if we ever rename the
company, we won't choose the name "GatorDemon" :)

FeedDemon
NewsGator Technologies Acquires
FeedDemon
06/06/2005 12:05 AMAcquisition of FeedDemon and TopStyle Strengthens NewsGator’s
RSS Platform. Nick Bradbury joins NewsGator team.
DENVER, CO— May 17, 2005 — NewsGator
Technologies, Inc., the leading RSS software platform company,
announced today that it has acquired Bradbury Software, whose primary
products are FeedDemon, the premier Windows-based desktop aggregator,
and TopStyle, the leading CSS/xHTML editor for Windows.
NewsGator also announced that FeedDemon will integrate tightly with
the NewsGator Online synchronization platform and be available as part
of all of NewsGator’s paid subscriptions. Nick Bradbury, the
developer behind both those products, will be joining NewsGator as
well.
The NewsGator Online platform provides a highly integrated and
synchronized reading/viewing experience across multiple devices, such
as the web, mobile phones, televisions, and e-mail clients such as
Microsoft Outlook. FeedDemon is the premier desktop RSS reader
for Windows; with FeedDemon joining the NewsGator product family, this
platform now extends to the Windows desktop.
Greg Reinacker, Founder and CTO of NewsGator, said “We knew we
wanted to extend our platform footprint to the desktop, and FeedDemon
was the clear choice for us. Its rich feature set and intuitive
user interface fit well into our product family, and we’re excited
to integrate our advanced synchronization capabilities into the
product.”
Nick Bradbury, Founder and President of Bradbury Software, said,
“FeedDemon customers have made it clear that they want to access
their feeds from any computer, but doing this right required more
resources than I could offer. I knew I needed to join forces
with someone, and after reading Greg Reinacker's blog post about the
company's product roadmap I knew who that company should be:
NewsGator."
Reinacker added, “Nick has built tremendous products in FeedDemon
and TopStyle, and is a highly-respected designer and developer whose
skills will substantially assist NewsGator as we continue to develop
our platform. We will continue to invest in these products
we’re adding to our portfolio, and are very happy to offer our
customers FeedDemon as a new choice for reading their content.”
Starting this summer, all paying NewsGator subscribers will get
FeedDemon as part of their subscription packages at no additional
charge. In addition, all FeedDemon and TopStyle customers will
get a free 2-year NewsGator business subscription, which will include
free updates of both NewsGator Outlook edition and FeedDemon.
“This is a wonderful arrangement for users of all of our products
and services,” said Bradbury.
Longtime NewsGator user Robert Scoble of Microsoft noted, “Two of
the best-regarded news aggregators in the business are joining forces
(NewsGator for its strong synchronization and Outlook integration;
FeedDemon for its awesome organization and search capabilities). I
can't wait to see what new capabilities I'll get!”

NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!
NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!
06/05/2005 11:08 PMYes, it's
true: NewsGator has
acquired FeedDemon and
TopStyle, and brought
me on board in the process.
Wow! How did this happen?
As regular visitors to my support forums know, the
biggest request - by far - that FeedDemon customers have had is the
ability to synchronize their subscriptions between multiple computers.
They use FeedDemon on one PC at home, on another at the office, on a
laptop while traveling, etc., and they want their feeds to be synched
between them.
If someone reads an item on one computer, it shouldn't show up as
unread on another computer. And when they subscribe to a feed, it
should automatically appear on any computer they use. Basically,
provide the convenience of a web-based aggregator with the power and
speed of a Windows desktop application.
I toyed with various hack-ish ways to do this, and even considered
creating my own web-based sync service, but in the end came to the
conclusion that to really do this right, I needed to join forces with
someone who already had the server-side piece in place.
Why NewsGator? I thought they were just an Outlook
plug-in?
I used to think that, too. But shortly after I decided I needed to
join forces with someone, I read this
post in NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker's blog, in which he laid
out NewsGator's plans. This post really opened my eyes to where they
were headed - let's just say, I was impressed.
Funny enough, soon afterwards I got an email from Greg asking
whether I'd consider joining forces with NewsGator. Truth is, if I
hadn't already read Greg's blog post and been so impressed with the
direction NewsGator was headed, chances are I would've turned him down
- but because I read that post, I flew out to meet with the folks at
NewsGator (score one for transparency through blogging!).
Long story short: we agreed that I should come on board and bring
FeedDemon and TopStyle with me.
So what does this mean for FeedDemon
customers?
I think you're going to like this :)
NewsGator uses a subscription model, and FeedDemon will become part
of their subscription plans. All existing FeedDemon customers will
get a two-year business standard
subscription for free - and this includes
upgrades to FeedDemon. In other words, if you've already bought
FeedDemon, you'll get brand new versions of FeedDemon and a
subscription to NewsGator Online free for the next
two years.
Are there going to be changes in FeedDemon as a result of
this?
Certainly. The most obvious will be that FeedDemon will integrate
very closely with NewsGator's online synchronization
platform, enabling using FeedDemon on multiple computers while
maintaining state between all of them. You could even use FeedDemon
on your home computer, NewsGator Outlook
Edition while at work, and NewsGator Mobile Edition
while traveling, and still have everything synched between
devices.
Beyond that, having a server-side piece offers a lot of interesting
possibilities. Coupling a rich desktop client with a first-rate
server-side aggregator provides the best of both worlds: you get the
power of a Windows application and all the flexibility of a web-based
approach. There have been a number of features I've been wanting to
add to FeedDemon that required a server-side piece which I can now
provide.
While these changes won't happen overnight, we've already been
working hard on a new release of FeedDemon - version 1.51 - which will
include much better integration than cur
rently exists. You should expect to see the first beta of
FeedDemon 1.51 a couple of weeks from now.
And what about TopStyle customers?
While the acquisition obviously came to pass because of FeedDemon,
NewsGator has made it clear that they're committed to TopStyle as
well. This was an important part of the deal for me. I use TopStyle
every single day, and I personally couldn't work without it. I'm
already developing TopStyle 3.12, a free upgrade for existing TopStyle
customers which will be released as a NewsGator product.
Oh, and you'll get the same deal as FeedDemon customers: a free
two-year subscription. For the record, TopStyle has a
lot of users - even more than FeedDemon - so this is
a very generous offer from the folks at NewsGator,
and it illustrates their commitment to the product.
So, what about you, Nick? Are you moving? And will you
still be doing support?
Although I'll be working for NewsGator (my official title is
"Architect of Client Products"), I'll be staying here in Tennessee,
with frequent trips to NewsGator's offices in Denver.
I'll continue to be active in the support forums - I need to, in
order to understand what my customers need - but I'll be handing over
the support reigns to the folks at NewsGator. In fact, NewsGator has
already taken over some of the support for FeedDemon - they're the
"reinforcements" I mentioned in this
post last month. The mysterious "Ron" I talked about is actually
NewsGator's Ronnie Gilbertson, who will no doubt be relieved that he's
no longer a secret!
And to illustrate their commitment to FeedDemon and TopStyle,
NewsGator has already hired Jack Brewster to help support both
products. Jack starts next month, and he's been a very frequent
contributor to my support forums over the years (sometimes I think he
knows TopStyle and FeedDemon better than I do). Welcome aboard, Jack
- glad you could join us!
Patience is a virtue :)
So, there are obviously some major changes underway here, and we've
got a lot to do to integrate my site, support system, etc., with
NewsGator's.
As long as this post is, I know it leaves a ton of questions
unanswered, and I'll try to address them here over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, I do ask for your patience while we get everything
sorted out. The entire process will likely take several weeks, and
it's possible there will be a few hiccups along the way.
The end result, though, will be something special. I'm excited to
have this opportunity to take my software to a whole new level, and I
look forward to entering this new chapter in my life.

Handling Arbitrary RSS Data with

01/24/2004 10:36 PMRSS extensions:
The inventor of NewsGator shows
us some of the really cool things you can do with it.
...you can define whatever extension you like, and
NewsGator will be able to use it in one way of another. Let's explore
how this works, and what you can do...you can take any extension data
and map it to a column in Outlook...NewsGator 2.0's rendering engine
now uses XSLT, and you can customize the transforms used to render the
items. What's more, any custom data is available to these
transforms...so you could have a custom rendering based on this data
by building a new stylesheet.
This could be huge for corporate applications — RSS could be
a generalized reporting stream on anything, including any statistics
necessary. Using Outlook VBA, you can even trigger client-side
programs when posts are received, so there's really no limit on where
you could go with this.

The thought process behind the Venture
Capitol funding of NewsGator
The thought process behind the Venture
Capitol funding of NewsGator
07/02/2004 03:08 AMEvery small company has challenges and one of those challenges is
always money. Just as I have big dreams and ideas of where I would
like to take Geek News Central it is limited by the amount of money I
have to invest in the site. I have started the process of looking at
hiring some advisors and possibly if my cash holds out having some
consultation meetings with people I think can help us.
My curiosity is always peaked when I read stories about what VC's
are looking for. I know from our refereal logs that several VC Firms
read our site on a regular basis, but you need a revenue model to draw
financial interest. Quite honestly most blogs do not have a revenue
model. All I can hope for now is that they read our articles and my
opinon points to find information on new technolgies that they can
invest in.
Like many Blogs we have tinkered with ways to raise money and may
be introducing a premium service in the future, but we have to work
out the content details along with working out the details of who we
are going to target that premium content to.
Most of the companies getting VC attention are companies that are
either responsible for the software that those of use to blog. The
tools we aggreate data with aka Newz Crawler, NewsGator etc. Plus the
companies that analyze the information we put out. But the individuals
down in the trenches producing 100's of thousands of Blogs are
basically helping other people's dreams come true.
For now I am happy if I get a few donations to help us with
bandwidth cost. Never planned to get rich but it's the American Dream.
For some real insight to what a VC is looking for read his article
great information and should give you a better understanding of what
the thought process is. [
