Off to Cleveland

Off to Cleveland 04/29/2004 07:15 PM
Very early Friday morning, I'll be headed to Cleveland for Brandt's wedding. Other blogger friends attending are: Dan, Kasia, and Morgan. A few folks have asked if there'd be time to meet up in Cleveland, but I doubt it. This is going to be surgical strike trip. Arrive Friday afternoon, wedding on Saturday, head home on Sunday. There's not much time left for other stuff. On the weather font, it looks like rain there. Ugh. I'm gonna miss the sun...

Cleveland airport gets Wi-Fi from SBC: I should really have left this item to senior editor Nancy Gohring, who hails from within spittin' distance of Cleveland, but SBC FreedomLink is now the operator of Wi-Fi service at that town's airport. The interesting twist in this installation is that there will be Internet kiosks in the airport as well as the SBC service. I've had mixed feelings lately about posting every single airport announcement, especially as smaller markets have become unwired: at some point, just another airport is just another airport, unless you live or work near it. It's a fundamental problem with covering wireless in general and Wi-Fi in particular as it matures. There's more and more news, and it starts to blur into much of the same. I see sometimes a dozen stories a week about a small town that gets its first Wi-Fi-enabled cafe, or another community project that unwires a park or public area. This is just to say that the proof of the success of the top-down and bottom-up movements in wireless communication are starting to permeate all media. When I appeared on a local NPR affiliate to talk about Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet telephony on their morning program recently, the host needed a technical primer in VoIP, which is quite new to most people, but through around Wi-Fi and wireless terms with great abandon and fluency....

Thoughts on Cleveland Trip

Thoughts on Cleveland Trip 05/02/2004 10:21 PM
I had fun this weekend in Cleveland. I haven't had a chance to post (or even upload) the 200+ pictures taken with my camera yet. Kasia really wants a crack at fixing some of 'em up anyway (she's good with the Photoshop, unlike me). So, until you can see photos of semi-drunken people you don't know in dark places you don't know, I leave you with a few things from this weekend. It's possible to get nearly a dozen people...

DVD Jon Acquittal Upheld

DVD Jon Acquittal Upheld 12/22/2003 12:44 PM
Well, it's been quite a few days against bad entertainment industry lawsuits. The latest is that, over in Norway, "DVD Jon" Lech Johansen has won the appeal on his case for creating and releasing the DeCSS code. This is a good ruling, though, it's likely the movie industry will appeal to the country's Supreme Court. The case revolves around whether it was illegal for Jon to create some code that would allow him to view movies that he purchased legally on his own computer running Linux. The movie industry says that he broke their encryption to do so. The original ruling said that he had done nothing wrong, and the Appeals Court echoes that in their ruling today, saying that Jon could go ahead and make copies of DVDs he legally owned - and that he did not break the law in creating software to help him do so.

Forget Layoffs, Fire Them For Porn

Forget Layoffs, Fire Them For Porn 09/01/2004 01:26 PM
One writer at ZDNet UK is wondering if the porn excuse is being used as an alternative to laying people off. There are a growing number of stories about people losing their jobs for viewing porn on work computers, but the writer wonders how bad the offenses really are. He also notes that no one seems to complain when a company gets rid of people for porn, but layoffs seem like bad news all around. This seems like a stretch (and also seems to imply that almost anyone you'd want to layoff has been surfing porn on their work computer), but is still somewhat amusing. Maybe we'll have a different stat next to monthly layoffs: "fired for porn."
