M.I.A. for intergalactic overlord

M.I.A. for intergalactic overlord 03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: There's an expression about entertainers -- "triple threat." It refers to someone so talented, they're equally adept in three areas, such as singing, dancing, and acting. M.I.A is a quadruple threat, because she is also adept at things like nuclear weapons and fighter jets, as you can see in this video. She totally fucking rules. My brother turned me on to her months back via a folder of freshly-burnt MP3s, and she's all over the place now. MeFi has a nice roundup post about the young Sri Lankan sensation today.
Link to QuickTime video for Galang, Link to MeFi roundup post with pointers to media coverage, Link to MIA's home page (hawks ringtones, among other things). I'm pretty sure that "Day to Day," the show I contribute to on NPR, is doing a piece about her this week...

Update: Piggy sez: "I couldn't access the mov file posted for the Galang video, so I found this link to it in Real format."

Reader F-Bomb sez:

I also had the same problem with the video link, so I found this one in Quicktime Format as well: Link.
Isaac B2 sez:
Ruben Fleischer is an incredible director who directed the M.I.A. video. You've probabyl seen hs Burger King commercial, but his video for DJ Format/MC Abdominal's "Hit Song" could be some of the finest video work I've seen in a while, featuring a great song and impressive graphics: Link
mnemesis sez:
This is link to a mashup of the M.I.A. Galang w/ the Super Mario Brothers theme. It's a bit of an improvement: Link.

Virgin Intergalactic Planetary

Virgin Intergalactic Planetary 09/27/2004 06:59 AM
It was bound to happen eventually - Richard Branson announced the launch of Virgin Galactic, a joint venture between Virgin and Mojave Aerospace Ventures, the company responsible for SpaceShipOne. They expect to send up to 3000 people into suborbital space over five years for £115k each (around $200k)and the first ship will be named the Virgin SpaceShip VSS Enterprise (well, I guess he can name it what he wants...). It's all immensely exciting, but personally I think Virgin Spacelines sounds classier.

The Mating Dance of Elephants

The Mating Dance of Elephants 04/07/2005 07:50 AM

According to a BusinessWeek article, phone companies trying to get into the video market are running into an obstacle: movie studios and other content owners. They aren't willing to license their content for video-on-demand and other new distribution formats.

Frankly, I hope the studios continue to hold out against the inevitable transformation of the video marketplace. The telcos are pouring money into fiber and IPTV deployments because they are scared about the competitive threat from cable companies, who are getting into the voice market. At some point, all dressed up with nothing to show, they may decide to take matters into their own hands. I'd love to see the phone companies throw their resources and political muscle into the process of blowing up the existing video value chain, alongside the smaller innovators like Tivo and BrightCove.

Robotic mating proposal

Robotic mating proposal 03/28/2005 01:17 PM
Xeni Jardin: Jason Striegel wrote an interesting post for Hackaday about a proposed sexual evolution mechanism for robots. He tells Boing Boing:
Using Lego Mindstorms, you can create simple robots that have the ability to mate (swap a simple software genome) and evolve (random chance of single point mutations). Mutations that make a robot unfit for traversing its environment or unable to mate will effectively drive it toward extinction as it cannot pass on its genes.

It's a pretty interesting experiment, as you can watch novel behaviors emerge with each generation. Even more interesting are the possible applications for an evolution based robotic platform. Two things that immediately come to mind are sex-based software upgrade mechanisms for distributed machines and distributed robot cultures that can adapt as a group to be optimized for communication in an environment, rather than being explicitly programmed for the task.

Now, I couldn't find any specific reference to fembots with gun-boobies in Jason's post, but any excuse to post this jpeg's a good one. Link

Mating Calls (BusinessWeek Online)

Mating Calls (BusinessWeek Online) 08/06/2004 09:38 AM
BusinessWeek Online - Cell phones are indispensable when you're on the road. But back in the office, they mostly get in the way. They ring at odd times, and if you use a headset with your office phone, they're awkward to answer. They certainly do nothing to improve your efficiency. The best solution would be to make your cell phone and land line work together better instead of competing for your attention. I've been looking at three different types of gadgets that let you do just that. The caveat: You'll need particular phones or wireless providers to use them. ...

Offspring is a lovely abstract visualization of the pair bonding process of a theoretical robot colony:
"Each robot is assembled, ages through youth, comes into a reproductive stage, and eventually dies of fatigue. If a robot is lucky enough to find a mate during it's reproductive stage, baby robots may be assembled.

Visually, the Offspring image is a historic graph of robot colony size and distribution. Males of the population are represented by single horizontal lines while Females are shown as double lines. (...) Robots can only mate with robots near them in both space in age. To encourage dissimilar permutations, robots are not allowed to mate with siblings."

BoingBoing reader Skye Ashbrook says, "They even give you the source code to each process. I'd love to take those and build small apps on my system to render really high-res versions to output to nice paper on an IRIS printer or something. They can't handle much traffic so if the link is fUXXored, please please keep trying back -- it is so worth it." Link

Update: BoingBoing reader Prion adds, "I was marveling at the mating robots and had in my mind that the work was similar to the magic found at levitated.net. Looking at the credits in the source code I discovered that flash master j.tarbell was the author, one of the levitated.net contributors. For glorious nonlinear flash animation, visit the site."

Special thanks to the script kiddies who've decided to make me misreable with over 50 virus' coming at me - at a time. And woe be it to the poor slob who's repair shop forgets to put the screwws back in the internal hard drive.

So all in all - Jan. 2005 was my lightest month of blogging - like ever. I think I offended Jason Kottke at some Vloggercon party, my clients are starting to get cranky and my kids finally got their birthday presents - which I had promised them back in November at their Bar Mitzvah.

The good news is that Carl is back, he's married and we're ready to rock the world.

First up - ourmedia.org.

It was great to see Greg Elin in NYC at Vloggercon and Mary Hodder at both Vloggercon and Blog Business Summit.

I also upgraded to MR 3.15 - but swtill no WYSIWYG editing. Anil promised something - but now I can't remember when we get it. He also said I get to come in and pitch open source infrastructure ideas to 6A - I can't wait.

They always seemed like the most likely candidates for becoming a DLA company - and supporting all sorts of new kinds of micro-content standards.

I have my fingers crossed on that one.

The end of Hubble?

The end of Hubble? 02/01/2005 09:18 PM
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) will probably die before 2010 due to insufficient financial resources to service it. There is no official announcement by NASA yet, but it is expected for 7 February 2005 during the presentation of the 2006 budget. (Sources: BBC, Space.com).

They're going to try to save the Hubble telescope after all! Yea!
Nasa chief Sean O'Keefe has asked for a firm mission proposal to be worked up in a year, after which a decision whether to proceed will be made.

As discussed previously in this thread, it looked like NASA didn't want to devote the resourses necessary to maintain the 14 year old telescope.

Robot to fix the Hubble

Robot to fix the Hubble 08/11/2004 09:45 AM

My first thought is are they smoking crack. NASA has gave the go ahead to fix the Hubble with a Robot. How in the hell are they going to do that and have enough lift capacity to get it there all in one launch. I know they went to Mars but getting a robot to fix Hubble has me wondering if they can really pull this off. [BBC]< /p>

So Long, Hubble

So Long, Hubble 01/17/2004 11:18 PM

Hubble casualty of Bush space plan: Sometime in the future, we'll be mourning the poor Hubble Space Telescope. It was good while it lasted.

The Hubble Space Telescope will be allowed to degrade and eventually become useless, as NASA changes focus to President Bush's plans to send humans to the moon, Mars and beyond, officials said Friday. NASA canceled all space shuttle servicing missions to the Hubble...

Did you know that when the Hubble was first launched (then subsequently — and infamously — fixed), there was a program where amateur astronomers could submit proposals and, if they were accepted, could use the Hubble to test their own astronomy theories?

The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond

The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond 11/12/2003 01:15 PM
The Hubble Space Telescope can be considered one of the most important science instruments created so far. Its service record is beyond impressive, but as it approaches its 14th anniversary of service it is becoming clear that new instruments are needed to complement or replace the now aging Hubble. Instruments that will include all technological advancements in optics and electronics that we have developed since the Hubble launch in 1990. Hubble will serve for at least 10 more years, but there is already the project underway that is aimed to create a new instrument that will help the scientists to observe in even more detail: The James Webb Space Telescope.
