Which Is The Commodity? Hardware Or
Software? Does It Matter?

Which Is The Commodity? Hardware Or
Software? Does It Matter?
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
The NY Times is trying to figure out the dynamics of the new new economy. It had become common wisdom over the past few years in the technology world that hardware was a commodity business - and unless you were a Dell and could figure out some way to produce the hardware cheaper, you couldn't make any money. However, along comes Apple, and they appear to have figured out a way to make money off of hardware. They're selling their iPods like crazy - partly due to the "loss leader" sales of songs from iTunes. In other words, the digital product (the songs) has become the commodity, while the hardware is where the margins are. This shouldn't be a surprise really. For all the talk of commodities, it always comes down to marketing and perceived value. If you're facing a competitive situation where prices are always going to get driven down to a commodity level on an even footing, you need to do whatever you can to make that footing uneven again. Steve Jobs does this via marketing. There are plenty of products that are cheaper than the iPod and are equally functional - but the iPod has been able to keep selling at a higher price by being better at the little things - increasing its perceived value, and increasing their ability to keep selling iPods. It's an understanding of the entire package of what they're selling that lets them do this. Rather than focusing on how to profit off of every little piece of the pie, they're focusing on what they know they can outperform the competition with - and making sure that the rest is sold at about cost. There's nothing magic about it - it's just good marketing.

Dutch Parliament Tells Minister To Stop

Dutch Parliament Tells Minister To Stop
Supporting Software Patents
07/06/2004 12:15 PM
Back in May we had the story of how the EU Council Ministers, despite tons of protest, had brokere d a backroom deal to approve an incredible backwards looking proposal on accepting software patents. Apparently, the Dutch Minister went back to his own Parliament and described the new proposal as a "compromise" rather than a one-sided ruling that ignored almost all of the complaints about problems with the proposal. Found on Dave Farber's Interesting People list comes the news that the Dutch Minister has now admitted his explanation of the proposal was a mistake, which he somehow blames on an "an error in the word processor." If someone believes that an error in a word processor can lead to him saying something that is completely untrue about a proposed law that would seriously impact the country's ability to innovate, you have to wonder why this guy has any power to vote on such laws at all. Thankfully, the Dutch Parliament seems to agree, and have told him to change his vote and no longer support the proposal. So far, this story doesn't seem to be getting much attention other than this one mention, however, so I'm wondering if there are others who can confirm this is what actually happened. I've found one version at DMEurope that seems to pretty much repeat the original press release, but nothing else.

Credit Suisse First Boston reiterated a "market weight" rating on the PC hardware industry after The NPD Group released May retail and distribution data for the United States, reports Forbes. The month represented the first material slowdown for PC shipments in over a year with a 6% year-over-year growth, with notebook sales increasing and desktop sales falling. "From a vendor perspective, Apple Computer was the big winner, growing units 79% year-over-year overall and 94% year-over-year in standalone retail," the research firm said. "The strength in retail year to date has been somewhat unexpected to us given the consumer strength over the past two years, along with slowing macro economic trends. However, it is important not to overanalyze NPD's shipment information, as this is not the first time units have slowed before immediately recovering--October 2003--in the following month."
