iPod + HP = No big deal

iPod + HP = No big deal 08/28/2004 11:08 AM
When Apple and Hewlett Packard teamed up in January to create and HP-branded version of the iPod, I, like so many others, was intrigued by the possibilities. For one, the pact represented the first of its kind for Apple and pushed the limits of cloning and imitating — here wasn’t a mere replica, it was a slightly modified version of the real thing. Secondly, at a time when the iPod was just beginning to take off, and the iPod mini was merely a preorder in hundreds of thousands of Inboxes, a partnership with a major distributor had far-reaching promise for both investors in the States and consumers overseas. Plus, it was blue. But now that it's here, it seems that the Apple iPod from HP, as it's been officially dubbed, doesn’t offer much in the way of prospect. Like a rookie who pitched his best game in preseason play, the new incarnation of the iPod seems like dead weight for Apple, while HP can ride the bench and collect its bloated paycheck. Granted, the HP Tattoos are pretty cool, but they do little to enhance the overall iPod experience — nor does the new packaging, USB 2.0 recommendation or Windows-like set-up poster. As far as I can tell, the iPod itself is identical to Apple’s offering, released five weeks later and in a new box. And it's white. I mean, didn’t Dell sell iPod last year? I fail to see how this is much different. Apparently, investors agree, as Apple’s stock dropped slightly, HP’s shares creeped up somewhat, and what was eagerly anticipated just 24 hours earlier turned into all hype and no substance. So, HP is selling iPods with its name engraved on the back… big deal. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I’m just being cynical, but I just don’t see the point. Now, Apple is making less per unit, and stands to lose brand recognition to HP. Selling the same iPod in a different box just doesn’t seem to offer anything positive for Apple. It all seemed so promising nearly eight months ago, but after more than a million sales, new stores, new models and a cover article in Newsweek, there doesn’t seem to be much punch behind the HP launch. It could be me, but I think the iPod is one thing Apple should keep to itself.

Gravis G-Pod Reviewed

Gravis G-Pod Reviewed 08/04/2004 11:37 AM

gravis_gpod.jpg imageGravis, a division of the snowboarding outfitter Burton (and not related to the gamepad and soundcard company, to my knowledge) sent me one of their G-Pod third-generation iPod cases to review, and I have to say I'm fairly impressed. There's a number of subtle but intelligent decisions apparent in the design, like a stiff, sturdy nylon that protects almost the whole unit except for the top left corner, where the remote/minijack plug resides (I'll presume they had a reason for covering up the hold switch, since it wouldn't have affected the design in the least to move the flap to the other side). Essentially two, hard flaps of material held together by an elastic mesh, the G-Pod really seems to hold tight to the iPod -- maybe too tight, if you ever want to pull it out of the case -- and protects the unit from damage by sticking out a little past the edges of the iPod. Unless you clipped the exposed corner, your iPod should stay pretty much unscathed.

They come in four colors -- key lime, ruby pink, canvas gray and jet black -- with a choice of two front panel designs, Open Face or Classic Face. Both front panel designs still allow access to the headphone jack and dock connector. In addition, you have two strap style choices, one that includes a long strap and a short one and another that offers the long strap and a built-in loop on the back of the case for attaching to your belt or bag. No pricing was offered by Tunewear.

CITY Magazine has a spread featuring a few high-end iPod cases - you know, the kind that sometimes cost as much as the iPod itself. Some of the cases, from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Dior Homme, and Gucci, are okay, if surprisingly plain, but Kate Spade's fuchsia mock-crocodile leather case with brass accents and Paul Smith's colorful stripes look like a lot more fun - and are almost affordable, at $55 and $115 each (I said almost).
