12/17/2004 06:33 PMDuke Law School, Center for
the Study of the Public Domain, has posted the eight finalists to
their Arts Project Moving
Image Contest. The contest asked entrants to create short films
demonstrating some of the tensions between art and intellectual
property law, and the intellectual property issues artists face,
focusing on either music or documentary film. The judges (including
our own Glenn) are
selecting three winners from among these finalists, and the winners
will be announced on January 15, 2005. They are also asking for your vote, from which they will give
People's Choice awards.
All of the finalists are licensed under Creative Commons licenses, and
the videos range from the account of a documentarian trying to cover
army recruiters in the North Carolina Piedmont, to a Polish animator's
science fiction vision of music's apocalytic future, from a college
student's efforts to make a Public Service Announcement about the
Civil Rights movement, to a dissection of the law behind "Supersize

Student, teacher punished for bypassing
school's 'net filters
04/05/2005 04:48 PMXeni Jardin:
A high school student was punished for freeing his fellow websurfing
students and teachers from their school's internet content filtering
system.
Conrad Sykes, 16, created a Web site that bypassed the
district's Internet content filter, which was hampering student
research, the student said. Sykes said he did this so students could
access research sites - but it also allowed students to visit adult
sites or others that the school district intends to screen out. Sykes'
site was so successful that many Spokane Public School students - and
people from as far away as Alabama and Pennsylvania - used it
thousands of times between Dec. 14 and Feb. 22.
Sykes was even asked by his computer teacher, Wes Marburger, to
make a presentation to other classes on the number of visitors to his
Web site.
The district filter is called Bess, and a dog is in the logo.
In the end, Sykes was suspended for two days in February for violating
school computer use policies. His teacher was given a written
reprimand and removed from teaching computer classes. The state Office
of Professional Practices is now investigating and could potentially
take away Marburger's teaching certificate.

tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers

BTW, I'm offering my comment spam

that this is a new way to fight comment spam. If it is, I would like
credit for discovering it. I consider this one final attempt to work
openly without patenting every innovation. I've been asking for help
with this for years. Now on the other hand, if it's not new, as Emily Litella said, "Never

A great example is this Newcity Chicago
article which, once again, gives Adam Curry credit for my work. He
doesn't say anything to correct them, that's his problem. The
reporter's problem is that he's passing on lies. It's endemic, that's
why you have a virtual industry of credit-takers, leeches feeding off
the creativity of others, and they get away with it because the
reporters are complicit. So please, I have no patience for people who
lecture us about the thorough research that the pros supposedly do, if
they ever do it, it's a very rare thing.

Credit for links
07/06/2004 08:26 AMDave. Thanks for giving
me credit for the Edwards as VP rumor link. You could have linked
directly, credited only Metafilter or anything
really. Actually, this is something that I struggle with every morning
when I open Net News Wire and go through my news feeds. Some people
take the position that it's not important where you get the link. I
don't think this is true. The dilemma happens when you find links to
the same interesting article on several blogs. Do you credit the first
link you see? Do you credit the first person who posted it? Do you
credit the most authoritative? I notice most people don't usually
credit Blogdex or Daypop. You can always go to Technorati and see who first
linked to it and who is the most authoritative link.
I don't think we need any global standard for link credits, but
it's nice when someone gives it to you and it's something I try to do
when I can. So thanks Dave.

After logging in, he opens up his personal page on the school
Intrablog. There, he does a quick scan of the New York Times front
page headlines and clicks through one of the links to read a story
about war reporting that he thinks his student journalists might be
interested in. With a quick click, Tom uses the 'Furl it' button on
his toolbar, adds a bit of annotation to the form that comes up, and
saves it in his Furl journalism folder which archives the page and
automatically sends the link and his note to display on his journalism
class portal for students to read when they log in. Next, he scans a
compiled list of summaries that link to work his students submitted to
their Weblogs the night before. With one particularly well done
response, he clicks through to the students personal site and
adds a positive comment to the assignment post. He also 'Furls' that
site, putting it in the Best Practices folder which will send it to
the class homepage as well for students to read and discuss, and to a
separate Weblog page he created to keep track of all of the best
examples of student work. Its 7:00...." [Weblogg-ed

Check out the full text of this amazing post by Will Richardson. In
it, he pulls together the beginning threads of integrating blogs, RSS,
and social bookmarking in an educational setting. It's a great vision,
one that I fully believe will eventually happen in one integrated
app.
However - and this is a big however - the only time the library
shows up in Will's post is when the teacher unsubscribes from the
library's feed! There's no mention of a topical feeds from the
library, use of library databases to support research or assignments,
no collaborative collection of web-based resources managed by the
library, or any other daily interaction with the library and its
resources. It's actually pretty sad when you think about it, but
unfortunately, it will be accurate if librarians don't start
understanding, using, and providing information to these types of
tools.

03/14/2005 05:29 PMXeni Jardin:
Boing Boing pal
Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won
Group Weblog of the Year at the
Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly
didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were
many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who
work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in
their honor:
check 'em all
out. On behalf of my blog-mates
Cory Doctorow,
Mark Frauenfelder, and
David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager"
John Battelle; our sysadmin
par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended
family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most
of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise
productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and
for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered
things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to
SXSW in person to accept the award,
but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at
ETCON (
all five of us will be in the same place for the first time).
Boing Boing sprouted online a little over
five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder
and
Carla
Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look
forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come.

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley

track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these
two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're

and Nik
Roope claim to have been the first to create one, something that's
a dubious distinction any way you slice it. First Ali shot off an
accusation that Nik had engaged in some "player hating," to which Nik
responded, "At least where we hail from, 'players' do not typically
leave multi sided die on their desktops next to mathematical
scribblings." Ouch! Ali, you just lost some hit points there, dude.

First day of school
09/26/2004 10:46 PM
Today was my first day of school. The requirement for getting an
university email, intranet and wifi account requires a course in netiquette. The
course focused on "don't spread viruses." OK.
I showed up a few minutes late as Professor Takeuchi was talking
about how tardiness would not be tolerated. (Sorry Professor
Takeuchi!) Strike one. I sat in my student chair feeling very
guilty.
Next was the session where we were going to get our accounts.
Instructor A: "So does everyone have have ICS IT Handbook?"
I didn't have one.
Me: "No. I didn't get one. Can I have one?"
Scarier instructor B: "Why don't you have one?"
Me: "I didn't get one. Where do we get one."
Scarier instructor B: "Sit down and share with someone."
(scowl)
Me: "Umm.. OK."
So we were instructed on how to log in, change our password, etc. I
finished a bit early and was messing around with my profiles. I
noticed a place on the intranet where we could upload our picture. I
started googling around for a good image to use when...
Scarier instructor B: "Are you following the instructor?"
I had clearly been profiled as a problem student by this point.
I turns out that there are only 3 DBA students and I was the only
one attending today so I was put in another class. That's why I didn't
have the handbook. Scarier instructor B didn't know this so I guess
it's not her fault for scowling. But sitting in a classroom being
scolded by instructors brought back a lot of memories. ;-) I'm going
to have to get used to it and try to fit in a bit better... for
now.
