Reminders 2000 v4.0 01/09/2004 09:58 PM

Reminders is a small utility that provides a simple means of creating on-screen reminders for important events. Event reminders are triggered when the specified time and date occurs. Reminders can be created to trigger messages on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis. Reminders can also be used to launch programs at a scheduled time. Sound files (WAVs) can be assigned to reminder messages and scheduled program launches. [Shareware $14.95 457 KB]

WPA for Free under Windows 2000

WPA for Free under Windows 2000 02/12/2004 11:20 AM
WSC releases free client for Windows 2000 that supports Wi-Fi Protected Access's pre-shared key mode: Given that Microsoft hasn't offered what Wireless Security Corporation estimates is 20 percent of all Windows users worldwide access to the robust WPA encryption protocol, they've released their own client for free. Their client offers just WPA-PSK (pre-shared key), which is the mode used in homes and small offices without back-end authentication servers -- but it's still much, much better than plain old WEP, the original broken encryption method for Wi-Fi. WSC offers hosted 802.1X for Windows XP and 2000. This move of releasing a free WPA-PSK client is quite generous, as it provides them only some publicity, and doesn't lock anyone into their service offering, as WPA-PSK can be used with any WPA-supporting access point. (WSC's press release is a model of a good technical release: it explains the problem reasonably, without hype, and with accurate details that educate the reader. It presents its solution fairly, as well.)...

PC World, 1990

"Last night I spent some time reading an issue of PC World magazine from September, 1990....

Just a few of the many interesting things in this issue:

  • News: Lotus Sues Borland (I was actually hired as an expert witness in that case, but it never went to trial).
  • Microsoft Ad: $50 upgrade to Windows 3.0!
  • Ad for Gateway 2000: Fully loaded 25 Mhz 486, 4 Meg RAM, 150 Meg hard drive, VGA: $5,295.
  • Funk Software ad: Sideways, print your 1-2-3 spreadsheets sideways on your dot matrix printer (remember that?)
  • News item: Symantec/Norton Merger Refocuses Utility Wars.
  • Excel tip: Save a group of related files by using File - Save Workspace. This tip still works today!
  • Ad for GEnie (an online service). It cost $6.00 per hour at 1200 baud non-prime time.
  • Ad for Software Carousel, a task-switching environment for DOS. "Use the software you already own - 1-2-3, WordPerfect, dBASE, Sidekick." I used to love that program." [J-Walk Blog]

I missed the ACME show on Saturday night, because I hurt my neck so badly on Friday, I couldn't even stand up Saturday morning. More on that later.

As if the pain in my neck and shoulders wasn't bad enough, I'm trying my best not to get sick, now.
