New Efforts Toward Friendlier And Safer
Computers
01/26/2004 03:04 PMRoland Piquepaille
writes
"Companies have been struggling to build safer and friendlier
computers since the first ones. Today, we'll look at two separate
efforts coming from the labs. Researchers from Sandia National
Laboratories want your computer to help you to make better decisions.
But how? It will know how you feel by monitoring your
perspiration and heartbeat, reading your facial expressions and head
motions or analyzing your voice tones. Meanwhile, MIT scientists have
found a way to repair corrupted data while your system is still up, allowing your software to fix itself without
a need for restart. This might avoid the famous answer "the system
is down" that you receive when you want to get a service or a product
in a store or on the phone. As Darwin Magazine asks, "What kind of
excuse is that?" Please read my blog
for excerpts from these three stories."

01/06/2004 02:24 PMThoughts from the Macworld Keynote:
- Does anyone care about xserve? Who would serve up sites or
services when you can get so much more power at a lower cost with
linux or FreeBSD boxes?
- Why did they spend so much time on Office? people haven't used a
new feature in word or excel since 1996
- Good lord did the iLife part drag on. Steve repeated everything a
dozen times, then had a video recap at the end for what we just saw.
The garageband section totally dragged at a snail's pace. It was clear
they were filling time. Also, isn't Garageband.com going to be pissed
they stole their trademarks?
- The biggest announcement everyone was waiting for is perhaps the
biggest failure. They want to go after the low end flash-based music
players that outsell the iPod, so what do they do? They go after their
target market by pricing ourselves out of it. Steve said "for just $50
more than a regular flash player you get so much more" and the obvious
thought is "for $50 more than that you get 4x as much storage in a
real iPod". Apple should have made a $99 or $149 price point their
only goal, and sold as much iPod they could for that price. A $250
crippled iPod is not a revolution, it's a market failure.
The positives:
- iPhoto no longer drags like a dog when you have more than 100
photos in it. They should have fixed that from the get go, but
whatever, it looks fixed now.
- iTunes, iMovie, and iDVD got updates, but they look minor.

those heading to the show are finalizing plans for times for off-site

Store San Francisco and Stonestown will be offering presentations on
iPhoto, GarageBand, Mac OS X, iMovie, iPhoto, Final Cut Express, .Mac,

Macworld walkabout
Macworld walkabout
02/01/2005 08:54 PMMacworld 2005 has ended, and it was a big one. Apple dropped a
low-cost computer on us, as well as an iPod with no LCD screen. Our
interpid reporter Charles Jade was on the scene, both for Steve Jobs'
keynote speech and to see who and what was on the floor of the Moscone
Convention Center. He even found the time to ask some tough questions
to some of the exhibitors:
"When is the 2GB RAM limit going to be lifted in
PhotoShop?" It's the question I was asked to ask.
The guy began his script. "Do you mean a 2GB file size limit?
Because through virtual memory Photoshop has always been able
to"
"No. I mean addressing more than 2GB of RAM."
Needless to say, he didn't get the answer he was hoping for. Along
with Adobe, he also visited Microsoft, Aspyr, and several other
companies and asked the hard questions. Check out his impressions of
the just-concluded Macworld San Francisco.
