Windows takes on multiple roles

Windows takes on multiple roles 07/22/2004 11:08 AM
As IT Week revealed recently, Microsoft is working to make Windows run Linux software, and not before time. Windows and Linux would be much more useful platforms if they could each run software originally written for the other.

Now let's talk about Longhorn. Longhorn is the codename for the next version of Windows, currently slated for delivery in 2008. Though Microsoft has mentioned the possibility of a 3D graphical user interface, and a new database-like file-system, it has actually made no promises about what will be included in Longhorn. Many people note that 2008 is so far away that without an excellent crystal ball, nobody could predict what the update will contain. But one thing I reckon for certain about Longhorn is that it will be able to run Linux software.

Exploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?
http://www.compumentor.org /ctcstudy/

CompuMentor Report Examines the Capacity of CTCs to Provide Technology Assistance to Nonprofits. Over the past several years, much discussion has taken place in the nonprofit sector and particularly in the community technology movement around the evolving roles of community technology centers (CTC). One idea that has received significant attention is whether CTCs may expand their roles to act as nonprofit technology assistance providers (NTAPs).

With the support of the AOL Time Warner Foundation, CompuMentor took a closer look at this issue and published its findings in the report "Exploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?" CompuMentor's interest in this subject came from two vantage points. First, as an NTAP we understand there is a very large unmet need in the nonprofit sector for technology support services. Second, as a provider or services and technical assistance to CTCs, we know that sustainability is a huge challenge.

The key findings of the report, conducted by Rem Hoffmann, include:

* Although CTCs are perceived as tech-savvy organizations, they may not have the capacity to function as NTAPs.

* Technology skills are only one of five categories of qualifications necessary to serve as an NTAP. Others are mission congruency, business capabilities, the ability to subsidize the cost of providing service, and position in the community. While a number of CTCs meet some of these qualifications, very few meet all or most of them.

* NTAPs reported that fundraising to subsidize the cost of providing services was critical to succeeding. The report found that it costs much more to provide these services than nonprofits are able to pay, which directly contrasts the perception that CTCs acting as NTAPs can generate earned income to support their other programs.

There appears to be a small subset of CTCs that can offer NTAP services. The paper concludes with a recommendation to conduct further research of new models for NTAPs and CTCs to partner to deliver services to community-based organizations.

USATODAY.com - Having an employed mom leads college-age men to expect that they'll be doing more child care than the sons of homemakers, who assume that their wives will take the lead in tending to the nest. It's just the opposite for daughters: If their mothers work, they plan to spend less time with their kids than do women whose moms stay home, according to an online survey released at the end of July.

Add "Mobl0gger" to My Titles

Add "Mobl0gger" to My Titles 11/10/2003 11:18 PM

I can finally confirm it - the Treo 600 is the coolest thing ever! Well, except for my parents, who bought it for me as an early holiday/birthday present. :-)

I spent all of yesterday playing with it, and I've only scratched the surface. Before yesterday, I talked a lot about shifting; today, I'm living it and I see the impact even more. I've already set up The Shifted Librarian Moblog over at TextAmerica, so I'll be sending my pictures to that site.

More about the T600 as I have time... if I can tear myself away from playing with it!

P.S. I'm taking suggestions for software to add to the Treo, especially recommendations for a good email program that handles IMAP (I'm currently deciding between Versamail and Gopher King), so please share. Thanks!

Markup in titles in RSS?

Markup in titles in RSS? 12/13/2003 08:14 AM

The RSS 2.0 spec and its predecessors may not say clearly enough if you can or can't include markup in titles. But I don't think you should include markup in titles. Titles are like file names (not exactly of course). They are a happy medium between software and people. Both must be able to read them and make sense of them, in all contexts, and do so easily. While it seems reasonable that a description may contain markup, it also seems reasonable that a title should not. So, if I were writing a validator for RSS, and encountered markup in a title, I'd warn the author that many processors would not be happy about this and it would be safer to strip the markup from the title.

Disclaimer: Scripting News is a weblog, not a spec. If you interpret it as a spec you will be making a mistake. I think I've said this quite a few times, but a few people still treat it as if I were writing a spec here. Not so. And not fair.

A postscript. I went back to see what the spec actually says, and it turns out it's not really a problem with the spec, rather with my recollection of what the spec says. Scroll to elem ents of item. It says descriptions may contain entity-encoded HTML. It doesn't say that a title may. So if that's the biggest problem people can find with the spec (which many were flaming about when I wrote it, it's not like they offered any help, btw) then it's a pretty damned good spec if you ask me.
