09/23/2004 02:41 AMSmall Town Software today released a free upgrade to Time and Budgets,
its web-based time tracking and budget monitoring software. Along with
new features, speed increases and the usual bug fixes, this upgrade
introduces new stand-alone software "widgets" that pull real-time data
from the Time and Budgets network -- as well as seamless connectivity
for Microsoft Outlook users (previously enjoyed only by Apple iCal
users). [PRWEB Sep 23, 2004]

today that it "...will discontinue maintenance and errata support for
Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 as of December 31, 2003," that
"Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for Red Hat
Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004," and that "Red Hat does not plan to

come as a surprise to NewsForge regulars who saw this story on October

Canadian Politician Worried About Fair
Use Freebies
06/01/2004 12:01 PMCanada has done a better job than many other places in trying to
balance the rights of creators and users of intellectual property -
but as in many places in the world, it looks like that may be shifting
in the wrong direction. A Canadian politician is trying to push a
copyright reform bill that would
require schools to pay a license fee for
content that is available free online - even if that content is
designed specifically for people to use for free. In fact, the
politician recommending this change seemed upset at the "freebies"
offered by fair use, and decided it was time to shut them off.
Apparently, no one explained that "fair use" isn't a loophole, but a
necessary point of balance in copyright law.

First Look: iPhoto 5
First Look: iPhoto 5
02/01/2005 09:55 PMAt times, previous releases of Apple's digital photo management
program iPhoto came across as catch-up efforts -- catching up to the
features found in third party applications that came before it;
catching up to the incredible pace that people were shooting and
storing digital pictures; and catching up to the potential of being
mature Mac OS X applications that aren't hobbled by the halting
performance and feature compromises that have been the hallmark of
Apple's 1.0 applications of late. In many ways, iPhoto 5 feels like
it's finally caught up. Some elements are organized a bit differently
than before, but in a way that suggests the designers took a closer
look at how people are actually using it.
