New RealPlayer Avoids Apple DRM License 01/09/2004 09:57 PM

Analysts said RealPlayer's support for iTunes songs is likely to prove controversial and could spur Apple to consider legal action, or implement software patches that would prevent playing of its music file format. By Steven Davis (eWeek via MyAppleMenu)

A man who'd been pulled ver for driving with expired tags called a friend while the tow was on the way and had the firend update his registration online. Before the tow arrived, the car had been registered, and the cop let him go with a ticket.
Leach took the renewal form the commission had sent him from his visor, which contained the access code he needed to renew. While Zier issued the summons and ordered the tow, Leach called a friend who took his credit card number and other information and renewed the registration for him, Conry said.

When Zier came back with the ticket, Leach told him the car was now registered. The computer inside Zier's patrol car confirmed it.

RealPlayer 10 Adds New Mistakes to Old: A pretty funny lambasting — disguised as a review — of the new RealPlayer 10.

RealNetworks' multimedia-playback program — once known as RealPlayer, then RealOne and now, with last week's release of a new version, RealPlayer once again — is both widely used and widely despised.

How so? The extensive use of RealAudio and RealVideo formats in online broadcasting makes the player software unavoidable, but the company's relentless use of it to sell unrelated services and features has made this program little better than spyware in many users' eyes.

Meru Avoids Mixed Traffic Penalties

Meru Avoids Mixed Traffic Penalties 08/10/2004 01:55 PM
Meru Networks introduced a new access point yesterday that it says supports both 802.11g and 802.11b clients at their maximum speeds: Typically, in a mixed environment, an 802.11b client will cause an 802.11g client to slow down considerably. The Meru AP virtually separates 802.11g and 802.11b traffic on a per packet basis. Because the packets don't see each other, the 802.11g traffic doesn't switch to a backward compatibility mode, which would require it to communicate with the AP in a way that creates overhead that typically slows down traffic in a mixed environment, said Sarah Kim, senior marketing manager for Meru. Because it is waiting for a patent, Meru is reluctant to disclose more about how the AP works, she said. Unstrung reported that the Meru AP lets 802.11g traffic transmit before 802.11b traffic, but Kim said that's not accurate. Typically, the drop in speed for 802.11g clients in a mixed environment is blamed on the fact that the clients must take turns communicating with the AP. That means the 802.11g client must sometimes wait for the 802.11b client, which by nature operates at a slower rate, to finish transmitting. It appears that Meru is addressing not this issue but the overhead issue, though again, the company was reluctant to share more details. Chipmaker Engim avoids the problems that typically occur in mixed environments by separating the traffic onto different channels. But Meru is using a single channel, Kim said....

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600? 01/08/2004 07:20 PM

There were lots of big announcements today but as far as I'm concerned, the biggest is Real's new software plus music store. Not for the music store itself, because after I download the first song for $.10 I don't envision locking my music up in AAC + Helix encrypted files, but because RealPlayer 10 brings with it a new Palm component. The line that specifically caught my eye is "support for over 50 portable music devices, including the iPOD and the Handspring Treo 600."

Naturally my fingers tripped over themselves to get to the Real site and download the software to my T600, but I couldn't find a download link for it anywhere. The key turns out to be this little phrase: "For the next 10 days, U.S. consumers who download RealPlayer 10 will be able to purchase their first track for only $0.10. Consumers can transfer tracks purchased in the RealPlayer Music Store to the Creative Zen Xtra as well as seven models of PalmOne devices, including most of the Tungsten models, the Zire 71, and the Treo 600."

I didn't realize I had to actually download the main player and create an account at the music store just to get the Palm piece that I want, but of course Real is going to make this as difficult as possible (I don't use Real anymore because it's become more and more annoying with each iteration). PDA 24/7 spelled it out in the following post:

"Email from Galley- 'As I write this, I am listening to Night Ranger's 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' on my Zire 71. It is a 192Kbps DRM-enabled AAC file! RealPlayer 10 was released today, and it features a music store. Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95 per album. All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound quality is very good. Persons who have signed up for a Music Store account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.' "

So despite my dislike for the software, I've been anxiously awaiting a new version of RealPlayer that would work with the T600 because I really, really, really want to be able to access Live365 streams. Even better, I'd like to finally be able to access Rhapsody on it, and I'm guessing this is the first step to making that a reality.

By the time I realized what I needed to do, I was home reading my aggregator for the night. Every day I carry my sync cable to work and back in order to keep my data and programs up-to-date at both home and work (yes, I need to buy a second charger/sync cable, but they all seem to be sold out). Naturally, I forgot my sync cable at work tonight, so I can't test this and install the Palm program. Argh - my kingdom for a sync cable!!

So until I have a chance to go through all of this myself, has anyone else installed the new RealPlayer 10 on a Treo 600? Can you do more than just listen to purchased Real music files in it? Can you hear live streams from other web sites? Enquiring minds want to know!

RealPlayer Rant

RealPlayer Rant 03/08/2004 11:17 PM

Real Obnoxious: Another great rant about how crappy RealPlayer is. I agree with everything here — RealPlayer borders on malware these days.

...playing video streams is only a very small aspect of what Real Player does; Real Player, most prominently, is a small bastard with inferiority complex and delusions of grandeur, not too different from Napoleon. Although Real Player's task is simple and limited to a certain timeframe, Real Player defaults to running at all times, whether its limited functionality is needed or not, and claims a seat for itself in the throne commonly called the systray.

Here was the last rant. Via BoingBoing.

digimaxv700.jpg imageSamsung won't be satisfied until they've dipped a toe in every gadget pond, it seems. Their new Digimax V700 aims at this year's consumer camera target with a 7-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom for less than $500 (and probably far less than that soon after launch). Available in three colors, the V700 should be out as soon as 'now' (although I'd wait for a proper review before picking one up. Consumer cameras in this class can vary wildly in quality).

AAC... hmmm... it's almost as if someone out there really likes iTunes. Maybe they'll add CONNECT and WMA support eventually, but probably not.

As you can guess, this five-megapixel sidearm is not only a pocket-ready camera, but also will support MP3 playback from SD and MMC cards—sounds great to me. Details are scant at the moment, but LetsGoDigital has some inital info (and really, until someone gets a hands-on, there's not that much more you really need to know).

Samsung Q30 Notebook Reviewed

Samsung Q30 Notebook Reviewed 01/03/2005 08:07 AM

samsung_q30.jpg imageSony's VAIO X505 laptop may be slightly smaller than the new Samsung Q30, but I know which one I'd rather have: the one that doesn't require me to carry external Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and memory card reader adapters to squeeze out that slimline package. The Q30 does have an external DVD drive, but considering how infrequently I use the optical drive on my laptop anyway, I'm fine with that. The Q30's 12-inch screen has a 1,280 by 768 pixel resolution, which is nice, although the Achilles' Heel for some may be the laptop's lack of a PC Card slot (something the X505 not only has, but relies on).

The unit Trusted Reviews got their hands on is a Korean import, but Samsung is planning to release the device at least in the UK, if not the USA (I'm fairly positive we're getting it).

Samsung Digimax U-CA3 Reviewed 06/30/2004 09:23 AM

samsung_uca3.jpg imageIt's always dangerous when a manufacturer, let along a reviewer, calls a camera (or whatever) "fun." Oh gee, just what I wanted on my 3.2-megapixel camera, "rainbow-colored blinking "disco" lights," "animated 3D avatar start-up screen," and "desaturated colors!" (I'm unsure that was meant as a "fun" feature). So basically, the Samsung Digimax U-CA3 is a kids camera, which is fine -- I support giving children the crappiest of all options in consumer electronics if it means keeping the good equipment for myself -- but for $229 I'd hope for something a little less "fun" and a little more "actually worth buying."
