Laptops and Servers
02/01/2005 09:44 PMIt just dawned on me that in a desk-side box, heat is not a major
problem because it’s got a room to cool it off, usually without too
many other computers in it. Laptops, however, are like back-room
“mainframe” servers in that heat is a big deal. In the one case
you’re worried about your users’ gonads and in the other your HVAC
budget, but the problem is the same. Right now, the heat budget is a
big concern for the guys at Sun who design our biggest servers. It’s
no secret that our
throughput
computing initiative is partly about this: lower clock speeds,
more cores,
thread-level
parallelism. Am I predicting that laptops with SPARC processors
will be leaping off the shelves next quarter? I wouldn’t go that
far. But I am smelling converging design spaces.

06/17/2004 04:17 PMDeveloper Vicomsoft has updated
SuperInten
dent, a module used as part of the company's InterGate solution,
to Mac OS X. While InterGate allows businesses and schools to manage
their network connections and Internet firewalls, the SuperIntendent
module provides detailed reports of Internet usage. Network
administrators can use the module to generate reports by user or IP
address, by the types of Web sites visited, by the types of Internet
protocols used, and by other criteria. They can drill down through any
of the reports to obtain more granular data. InterGate pricing starts
at US$99 for five users, with SuperIntendent starting at $349 as a
companion module, and scales up from there. System requirements call
for Mac OS X v10.2.6 or higher, a Mac with a G3 or better processor
and 50MB hard drive space. A 30-day demo of InterGate is available for
download from the Vicomsoft Web site, after you fill out a request
form.

San Antonio considers municipal broadband
network: A non-profit is working on a plan to offer
low-cost Internet access to poorer residents of San Antonio and wants
to work with the city to offer free wireless hotspots. The Texas house
bill that prohibits municipal networks would disallow this kind of
cooperation. (It might even doom some of Austin Wireless's projects
that involve city help, founder Rich MacKinnon mentioned during South
by Southwest interactive a few weeks ago.)
The reporter quoted the New Millennium Research Council's concern
about muni networks, but tried to get the executive director, Alan
Hepner, to identify funding for the report and the group, which he
refused to. This is a step in the right direction. In the past, they
just denied a connection--well, at least their partner on the report
The Heartland Institute did. C'mon, Alan, you're listed as an assistant vice president at
Issue Dynamics; the NMRC site says it's a project
of IDI; the IDI site describes its relationship
with NMRC as the council providing clients briefs, analysis, and
research; and SBC is a listed IDI client (as
well as Verizon, Qwest,, BellSouth, and Comcast, and, bizarrely,
several no-longer-in-existence firms Pacific Bell, Ameritech, and
GTE). Your cover is blown. Let's drop the pretense. [link via Muniwireless.c

Virginia's pro-muni, pro-competitive bill morphs into deadly
form: The quintessential quote from an elected
legislator: '"We were moving toward a compromise with the industry,"
said Helmick, D-Pocahontas. "But they don’t want the bill, and
they’re going to be against it."' I've forgotten, Senator from
Verizon--who elected you?
The revised bill guts municipalities' self-determination and
eliminates their ability to sell bonds to fund efforts. [link via Muniwireless.c

Principal bans bl0gging: "not
educational"
03/31/2005 02:31 AMCory Doctorow:
A Junior/Senior High School principal in Vermont has banned in-school
blogging because "blogging isn't educational."
Principal Chris Sousa said the decision to block the site from school
was made because blogging is not an educational use of school
computers.
But he's also urging parents to keep tabs on their children's
blogging, with a particularly close eye to what personal information
the student may be posting on sites like Myspace.com.
In 1988, I was the writer-in-electronic-residence for a class of grade
2/3 students in Toronto, reading and helping them with their writing
via 14.4K modems using ZModem transfers. Getting them to use to
computer to write, revise, and critique one another was an amazingly
powerful tool for unleashing their creativity and improving their
communications skills. If this prinicpal thinks blogging isn't
educational, he needs his head examined: he should be seeking out
every student blogger in the school and giving them special time to
blog
more -- and giving them extra credit besides.

Student Suspended For Posting Photo Of
Principal Breaking The Law
03/24/2005 05:19 AMEarlier this month, we had the story of some students who were
suspended for
video
taping their teacher lose his temper. The punishment seemed
somehow backwards (even if all the attention later resulted in videos
of those same students
destr
oying property coming to light as well). Here's another case that
sounds quite similar. A high school student
photographed the
school's principal smoking on school grounds, in violation of
state law and posted it to the web. He also passed out fliers around
the school pointing to the website -- which seems to be the argument
the school is using to suspend him. The principal is claiming that
the suspension was for "harassing and slandering her and being a
disruptive influence." Of course, since it appears she actually was
breaking the law, then it seems the slander part is tough to show. Of
course, part of this points out a cultural change that people need to
get used to: the fact that you can be watched and recorded almost
anywhere at any time.
