The judge who refused to issue an immediate injunction against gay and lesbian weddings in San Francisco did so on the basis of a punctuation nit.
"The way you've written this it has a semicolon where it should have the word 'or'," the judge said. "I don't have the authority to issue it under these circumstances."

If you missed ETCON, it's not too late -- ConCons are planned for next Monday in San Francisco and London, at which many of the ETCON speakers and attendees will recapitulate their ETCON talks as five minute lightning talks, with beer, in bars.
If you saw some good stuff at etech and want to tell people - or spoke at etech and want to retell your work to a wider audience, sign up below. Then force other people you know to do the same. The more people we have, the less you'll have to do!

The format is a casual, five-minute lightning talk with a friendly audience, with the emphasis less on five minutes and more on questions and answers. We'll just go through names until we run out of time. Then we'll have fun.

Firsthand account of the gay marriage

Firsthand account of the gay marriage
rush at San Fran city hall
02/15/2004 09:18 AM
My colleague Seth Schoen took a walk yesterday down to the San Francisco city hall and watched the hundreds of lesbian and gay couple in various states of marriage. His first-person account is touching and sent a shiver up my spine.
We walked around the side of the line and saw hundreds of same-sex couples in all states of dress (punk to tuxedo to family heirloom dress to just-off-the-street-in-work-attire). One couple wore yarmulkes and carried a siddur; another couple looked like ordained ministers, but I didn't know for sure of which Christian denomination. (It must be one willing to ordain gay women.) At the back of City Hall, the line was making its way through the door past a group of about half a dozen well-wishers with big pink signs. They looked like high school students. One of them was carrying an American flag with gay rights symbols in place of the stars. (Oddly enough, San Francisco regular Frank Chu was demonstrating too, with his usual sign that had nothing to do with same-sex marriage -- instead about galaxies, a rocket society, and impeaching former U.S. presidents. I was pretty sure he was just trying to get on TV with his message. You see him frequently in the Financial District.)...

Zack and I applauded for the couples as they were married, and shook hands with them. The couples were as diverse in age as they were in dress: I saw a pair of women get married and was sure they were younger than I am. And I saw and was most touched by several weddings of people who had likely been waiting even longer than 18 years. Two women of my mother's age, or a little older, were married right in front of me, and they started to cry. I almost started to cry, too.

The NY Times wants fewer links

The NY Times wants fewer links 06/17/2005 04:32 PM

A couple months ago, I chatted with someone who said the New York Times was considering going to a subscription model for nytimes.com, similar to the Wall Street Journal. I said that would be a foolish and short-sighted decision on the Times' part; to place their content behind a subscription wall would be to remove themselves from online conversations now and in the future.

Adam L. Penenberg, in an article for wired.com on February 24, 2005 about the Wall Street Journal's for-pay approach, Whither The Wall Street Journal? expressed a similar point of view:

Since most people refuse to pay for WSJ stories, most bloggers are reluctant to link to them. It also has an impact on anyone who uses the web for research -- and there are a lot of us. As importantly, the next generation of readers is growing up by accessing news over the internet, and one place they are not surfing to is WSJ.com. With their habits being formed now, there is little chance the Journal will become part of their lives, either now or in the future. (emphasis mine)

The Times should remove all barriers to content, from their registration requirement to their for-pay archive access
And yet, yesterday the Times issued a press release, The New York Times Announces TimesSelect - New Online Offering to Launch in September announcing their decision to move more content to an expensive for-pay only section of their site. This is a move in the wrong direction: The Times should remove all barriers to content, from their registration requirement to their for-pay archive access. Such action would enable and increase linking to their broad range of content.

As Jill Walker writes in her paper, Links and Power: The Political Economy of Linking on the Web, "Links have become the currency of the Web. With this economic value they also have power, affecting accessibility and knowledge on the Web."

Enabling more links to the New York Times would:

  • increase the visibility of the Times brand
  • help content reach a larger segment of readers
  • increase traffic to the site

Clearly, increased traffic would drive increased revenue in the form of online advertising. And in the long term, I believe it would generate more income than charging US$49.95 for an annual subscription. Perhaps US$49.95 is, as Martin Nisenholtz (senior vice president of digital operations for the Times) says, a "terrific price point" for what they're offering -- if you happen to live in the US or western Europe. But it truly is a world wide web, with English as its de facto language.

As media brands increasingly become more global, it's hard to fathom why the Times wouldn't do everything in its power to ensure it's the world wide web's news leader. By charging for its online content, the Times reduces its number of linkable sources, and thus its reach in the online world. It's their first step towards ensuring they will play a smaller role in it going forward.

Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AM
This month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting "I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

NewsGator Offering in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Enables Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and even Karaoke.

NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily find NewsGator software and services online, without having to separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not already been viewed on another device can be displayed by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of NewsGator Technologies.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news services."

More about NewsGator Media Center Edition

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any device, without duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.

Thanks to Berkman Center

Thanks to Berkman Center 04/16/2004 05:05 AM

Over the next few days I'm going to call out some of the people who made this conference happen.

First thanks to Berkman Center. Before coming here I had talked about doing conferences, since the early 90s, but it took the support of John Palfrey to get me to actually take the chance. I remember standing in his office last spring, about a year ago, asking if he really wanted to do it, and he said in Paltreyesque fashion "Desperately." Desperation, that's a good motivator!

Thanks to Catherine Bracy and Wendy Koslow, who cheerfully navigated the emergencies, brownouts and weirdnesses of doing a blogger's conference at a big Ivy League school. It's the first time I've worked with Catherine, and the second time with Wendy. This conference wouldn't have happened without their help.

Thanks to the Berkman Thursday group. To Jay McCarthy, who's responsible for the technical aspects of the conference, to Lisa Williams who is doing the User Vision session, and helped out in many other ways, to Jessica Baumgart for leading the Librarians session, Sooz for organizing the Durgin Park dinner, Mike Walsh for help organizing and to all the regulars who participated in the process.

It takes months of hard and creative work and lots of support to pull a conference like this out of thin air. If it works, it's a miracle. Knock wood, praise Murphy, I am not a lawyer, it's even worse than it appears.
