What book counterfeiting costs
What book counterfeiting costs
06/17/2005 03:34 PMCory Doctorow:
With all this talk of ebook "piracy" it's pretty interesting to read
about some of the nitty-gritty of actual book counterfeiting, the kind
that results in high-quality copies of physical books that are easily
mistaken for the authorized items:
After numerous calls to Kinkos and awkward conversations with vanity
presses and POD publishers (kids, and adults, should not try this at
home), The Book Standard staffers determined that a potential Potter
pirate would have to team up with a particularly unscrupulous—or
clueless—printer in order to produce a significant number of illegal
copies of a book. One estimate suggested that 10,000 copies of a book
about the expected size of Harry Potter—672 pages—could be printed
for less than $30,000, which puts the cost per book at $3.00. Shipping
and handling is another matter, but could be figured at 10% of the
production cost. Sell each copy at $10, and your criminal entrepreneur
is raking in approximately a 200% profit.

Are People Really Counterfeiting
Nintendo Games From The 80s?
04/14/2005 01:40 AMNot quite sure what's going on here, but it certainly sounds like an
AP reporter might be a bit confused -- or, at least, has written a
confusing article. The article claims that four people were
a
rrested for selling counterfeit Nintendo consoles -- and
even says 60,000 counterfeit consoles were seized. Of course, it's
not entirely clear why they would be faking consoles instead of the
software, so in the very next sentence, the story switches and says
that they were counterfeiting games. Which games? "Donkey Kong,"
"Mario Brothers," "Duck Hunt," "Baseball" and others.
Donkey Kong,
Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt and Baseball?!? Yes, that's Nintendo's
cream of the crop from somewhere in the mid-eighties. Is there really
so much demand for
Duck Hunt that it needs to be counterfeited?

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
06/17/2005 07:13 PMFor most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and
butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it
worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at
Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the
Creative Suite 2 applications.
In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop
and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with
age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really
document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made
it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like
say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.
It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place
as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a
favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system
browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe
apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like
iPhoto's.
Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac
OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is
the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the
new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way
to find out...
