imagefloaties.jpgThe Imagepro3D from Barcelona-based "TheSpecialThing" delivers 3D animated advertising right before your child's own eyes, giving them their first experience with the empty promises that their doomed life holds. No glasses are necessary and the black box contains an optical system and patented software to project the images in front of you. Similar technology could easily be adapted for use in museums and anywhere else that floating, animated images are welcome. The company's site isn't coming up, so for now, we'll link to the WMMNA article.

Animated subversion from within?

Animated subversion from within? 06/08/2004 08:51 AM
These educational cartoons about the upcoming G8 conference are easily some of the worst pieces of animation ever to be considered "educational." Could they be an attempt to create animated subversion from within? Or is it just par for the course when the government tries to sell the G8 to the youth of America? Oh, and if you like the cartoon, try testing your G8 IQ.

led_knight_rider_watch.jpgEvincing the fondest memories of KIT from Knight Rider, the TS100 from Cyber Punk is an LED watch featuring a mirrored face and several different scrolling effects on its LED grid. The grid consists of 90 LEDs, and when you press the button they do their little dance and "fade away", leaving illuminated what remaining lights are required to tell you the time (or date). Completely stainless steel, they're available for import now from TokyoFlash for roughly $140 including shipping, "because you are a rebel!" An animated graphic on the catalog page gives you a good idea of how it works.

Woodring animated

Woodring animated 08/17/2004 01:25 PM
frank Ever since I interviewed artist Jim Woodring back in 1995 for the bOING bOING Happy Mutant Handbook, I've been enamored with his surreal comix inspired by his childhood hallucinations and "psychological malfunctions." Now, Taruto Fuyama has animated Woodring's Frank character in a beautiful piece that somehow manages to perfectly express the dreamy tone and emotion of the comic. (Someone else's attempt here.) Fuyama won a Prize of Excellence for the work in the Japan Media Arts Festival. The animation is online in Real format. From the "Reason for the Award":
"...the greatest appeal of this work is that it had successfully expressed unique "newness" by combining 3D-CG and classical cartoon-like design. Alien creatures created by pasting comic frames to 3D-CG in a Gothic manner generate uncomfortable feelings, and these uncomfortable feelings that color the entire work feature this work's contemporary sensitivity."

Ewoks Animated Cels

Ewoks Animated Cels 04/13/2004 07:49 PM
The Official Star Wars Fan Club have been sending out membership kits recently which include several perks for paying members. Included this year are hand painted animation cels from the Ewoks TV series. From the looks of several early arrivals, most members were getting really cool pieces that would look great framed and hanging in any collection room. That is, until I saw this one. Click the image above for a better idea of just how small a piece of artwork this really is. I know not everyone can get decent piece like this one but this just made me laugh. What exactly is this piece anyways? Are they lips? Ewok coffee beans? Who knows? I want to invite anyone and everyone to share their Ewoks animated cel with me and all of our Rebel readers out there. If you got one, good or bad, snap a pic and email it in!

Animated Figures Available In Canada

Animated Figures Available In Canada 05/07/2004 03:24 AM
Even though they are a Target exclusive below the border, the Animated Clone Wars figures seem to be fair game here in Canada. Sadly, the traditional distribution problems here are again preventing Hasbro Canada from getting these little gems into our grubby little hands. The toy company isn’t to blame this time (or so it would seem) since they are currently being solicited on their retailer’s only web site. Thankfully, a North Vancouver toyshop, Big Pete’s, has noticed this oversight and has ordered a large quantity of the line. That being said, Canadians looking to avoid a large secondary market sting and potential Customs charges need only drop Pete a line.

The snow has given me another season to add to this compressed-time picture of a tree on the side of my house: tree animation (286 kB).

Meanwhile Paul seems to be watching trees grow.

Lip Talkers Animated Speakerphone 07/12/2004 07:39 AM

lip_talkers.jpg imageI don't quite get the overall design aesthetic behind this US Basic Lip Talkers speaker phone. The blue plastic says, "I'm fun, but crappy!" while the motile chrome lips just scream, literally if you like, "I'm a classy, futuristic muppet!" Either way, it's a little too much fun and too much class for the likes of me; I'll stick to my overclocked Teddy Ruxpin.

Animated "Blind Man's Penis"

Animated "Blind Man's Penis" 05/06/2004 10:24 AM
Jo hn Alderman says:
"Back in the '70s, John Trubee (weirdo prankster) saw one of those ads that offers to assess your poetic talent and set your poems to music. So--testing limits--he wrote the most offensive thing he could think of, pushing all the buttons, and sent it off. The refrain was originally 'Stevie Wonder’s penis, is erect because he's blind.' The company wrote back and, of course, told him he had talent, and would set his song to music and press disks if he'd pay them a little. But, because they didn't want to get sued, they had to substitute 'a blind man' for Stevie. The record was pressed and it became a sort-of underground hit in LA. Funny also because Trubee's prank calls were supposed to be the inspiration for Matt Groening's use of them. They were friends!"
Now, "Blind Man's Penis" has been given the Flash animation treatment! Link
