Progress Report
01/27/2003 08:03 PMI've been making some progress on polishing off the new web design.
Below are some things I've fixed worth noting:
- Disabling of Javascript in comment links.
- RSS improvements
- The RSS feed works in aggregators now (like Sinderella and
Amphetadesk).
- I've added the dc:date field to my feed now for easier viewing
in aggregation programs.
And some things I'm working on:
- I am working on getting my CMS ready for release.
- New email validation for the comments.
- Extensive mac testing (the Mac I was using for testing at work
was taken away for repair. I've heard Safari doesn't work with the
dynamic stuff here, I'll be correcting that ASAP).
- Comment previewing
- Non-dynamic commenting
- Switching to a new webhost (reccomendations?)
Elsewhere, one of my two cats is being features over at Stonefishspine's
ZenCat. This is the rather large, but perpetually friendly
(despite how he looks in the photo) Monty. Drop by and leave a

NetNewsWire 2.0 progress report
NetNewsWire 2.0 progress report
06/25/2004 04:59 PMWe had hoped to ship NetNewsWire 2.0 before WWDC—or at least
have a public beta released. But, well, I was optimistic. It looks
like it will have to wait until July.
Just so you know, here’s where it’s at...
The major new features are all in testing, except for synching, which
I’ve been concentrating on this week. As soon as synching is in
testing—either this week or right after WWDC—then all that
remains is adding a couple small features, fixing bugs, and adding
polish.
In other words, we’re just about to turn the corner and enter
the home stretch.
We have a large group of testers, and they’ve been doing a great
job of banging on things. Stability is job #1, and it appears to be at
least as stable as 1.0.8, if not more so. Performance is also
important—some of our testers have huge subscription lists that
we’ve been testing with, and we’ve done a bunch of work to
make NetNewsWire faster.
(Stability and performance are ongoing jobs, of course, and
we’ll continue to work on them after 2.0 ships. Every app could
be faster and more stable.)
Dilemma
My dilemma is: when
should we release a public beta?
On one hand I want the public beta to be highly polished, so that
people get a good impression of the app.
But on the other hand I’m eager to have you get a chance to use
all the new features, even if they’re not quite perfect yet.

As an example of what I mean, look at the tabs above. Note how the
close button is on the right side. This is an example of the many
little details that need to be cleared up before shipping the final
version. (Should the close buttons be on the left, a la Safari? But
then should the favicon move to the right? Should it be a pref?
Or...?)
With a closed testing program, everybody has a stake in improving the
app. With a public beta, lots of people evaluate it as if it’s a
finished, shipping app—which isn’t fair to the software,
but they do it anyway.
So I’m torn between releasing the public beta early, before
it’s very polished yet, and releasing it later, when it’s
very close to being the final, shipping version.
What do you think? Would it be dumb to release the public beta
sooner rather than later, or should I just go for it, release it at
the soonest possible date?
A few facts
I’ve mentioned these things before,
but I figured I’d repeat them since they’ve scrolled off
my weblog...
NetNewsWire 2.0 will be a free upgrade. Everybody who bought (or will
buy) 1.x will get all 2.x updates for free.
And here’s a partial list of the new features in 2.0:
Searching
Flagged items

sheets
Embedded browsing
Smart
lists (like smart playlists in iTunes)
Scripted feeds
Search engine feeds
Activity window
Errors window
Synching

05/31/2004 05:38 AMProgress Report On PDF Archiving Standardhttp://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/daily-updates/25986-1.htmlThe Federal Publishers Committee is hard at work developing an
archiving version of Adobe's Portable Document Format and hopes to
release a draft of the PDF/A standard early next year. Committee
member Stephen Levenson says the plan is to have a final standard out
by the end of 2005, which will be submitted to the International
Organization for Standardization for approval as an international
standard. The need for an archiving standard is clear, says Levenson.
Because Adobe encourages organizations to use its PDF specifications
to create their own software for use with PDF file, that customized
software may introduce extra features or functionality that make it
impossible for outsiders to access certain segments of a file. PDF/A
will codify a stripped-down version of the PDF format that will be
platform-neutral. PDF/A will standardize aspects of meta-tagging,
color representation and multiple language support, and will also
require that all fonts used in a document be embedded in the document
itself. Once the PDF/A standard has been approved, the committee hopes
that software vendors will incorporate it into their own PDF readers
and generators. Levenson says he envisions PDF software that would
include the PDF/A as a "save as" option, making it easy for users to
create archive-ready documents.

Progress report on the Frontier open
source release
08/31/2004 07:43 AM
We're getting close to the open source release of Frontier. I
believe it will happen before the end of September.
Technically, the software is ready to go. Andre
Radke, who was the last full-time maintainer of the code at UserLand,
up until four years ago, when he returned to be a full-time physics
grad student, did the work to get the code ready. Steve Zellers at
Apple has also been participating. I see Andre and Steve as the two
leaders of the project once the release has taken place. I trust both
of them, I can't imagine two better people to entrust this project to.
I see myself as playing an advisory role, writing scripts to test new
versions, and representing Frontier as a legal entity.
The one remaining issue
to decide is the license agreement. I guess this has always been so,
but now it's the crucial decision, once it's made, the release can
proceed. Here's my current thinking, after having talked with several
lawyers with experience in open source software, and having read up on
various approaches, this is what I've come up with. (Note I am not a
lawyer, I am posting this so that lawyers can comment publicly.)
1. No breakage. I want old scripts continue to run in new
environments. A lot has been invested in code that runs in the
Frontier environment, one of the reasons to release the kernel as
source is so that those apps will run better, in more operating
systems. I want to limit incentives for people to fork based on
compatibility. I don't want to create a dozen semi-clones of Frontier,
rather I want to incentivize people to add to the culture, add new
features, fix user interface bugs, but not to break apps.
2. I want it to be possible to create a commercial business
from the code base. However, I want the general rule to be that if you
make an improvement to the code, you must share it on equal terms.
I think these two goals clearly imply a base license that's
GPL-like, with an option for a more liberal license, for either a cash
fee, or an agreement to remain compatible, or a combination of fee and
agreement. This is a derivative of the MySQL license system.
I'm looking for feedback from lawyers who have experience with
open source licenses, and developers who have released code under open
source licenses, and people who have used code under open source
licenses. The best form of feedback is in public, on a weblog, so you
can send a URL and I can point to it. I'm not
opening a comment thread on this becuase it's sure to only attract
unconstructive comments.
Note that we are not trying to shake up the world, or change
what anyone does, or kill anything, or necessarily even create
anything. So comments that say things like "This will never kill
Apache" or "Python already has too much of a lead" while quite common,
always miss the point.
For an
idea of why I'm releasing Frontier as open source, please refer to
this article I wrote in May.

spLaura Campbell, associate librarian for strategic
initiatives at the Library of Congress, says of her work spearheading
the LC's collaborative National Digital Information Infrastructure and
Preservation Program, "It's the best job I ever had." Campbell and her
colleagues are finishing up their review of 22 proposals from
potential preservation partners and are working with experts to
construct a technical architecture for the preservation process.
Nearly 5 terabytes of digital works characterized as "at risk" have
been collected so far. They include Web pages that document recent
events, such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the
ongoing war in Iraq. Librarians used to worry about preserving access
to books and periodicals, says Campbell, but with most Web sites
staying up an average of only 44 days, preserving access to them is
far more complicated. In addition, the copyright issues surrounding
long-term preservation of digital journals, books, and audio and video
material have yet to be resolved. "There may be technological
solutions that make the management of restricted material much
easier," says Campbell. Because so much about digital preservation is
yet unknown, Campbell says the library's strategy is to learn by doing
and be prepared to make corrections along the way. She credits the
many experts she consulted during the planning phase of the program
with impressing upon her the need for continuing flexibility: "It
helped us realize that we would always be learning and adjusting,"
says Campbell.

Wayport Raises $20M
Wayport Raises $20M
08/03/2004 12:47 PMWayport reports raising an additional $20 million in private
placement: We try to avoid reporting on routine financial events such
as funding rounds unless the company has critical importance to the
industry or its financial well-being is in question. Wayport told me
about a year ago that they were seeking additional funds in a round
that would allow them to expand their sales force, among other
purposes. That round just closed at $20 million. I'm not surprised
that Wayport was able to raise these funds given their Wi-Fi World
retail model of charging announced several weeks ago, which provides
them a sustainable model from Day One for unwiring McDonald's
locations, for which they have the exclusive franchise contract.
Wayport was also selected as the managed services provider for SBC's
FreedomLink to build out the several thousand UPS Store locations. In
the wake of May's announced Cometa Networks shutdown due to lack of
funds, it's useful to know that Wayport has these additional funds in
hand. Wayport disclosed its revenue predictions in May when they
announced their Wi-Fi World pricing model for partners....

06/21/2004 01:50 PMWyndham has long been the mainstay of Wayport's hotel market, and
they've re-upped: The new contract will last three years, and comes at
a time that Wayport is exploring new business models for providing
flat-rate reseller access to their retail partners--hotels and other
venues could follow, but not for months. Wyndham has both wired and
Wi-Fi service, mostly in-room wired broadband and Wi-Fi in public
spaces, and provides free Internet access at its 85 properties to
members of its By Request affinity club. Membership in the club is

Wayport Metrics
Wayport Metrics
05/25/2004 04:20 PMDuring Wayport's briefing yesterday, they shared key metrics about the
company: It's rare to see this much data from any hotspot provider,
which goes to show the confidence Wayport has in its current and
future businesses. The old saying is, never write your competitor's
business plan for them. Wayport fears no such animal, it's clear,
especially with its Wi-Fi World partnership model ahead of it. In
terms of core connections or 24-hour sessions, Wayport shows 124,000
in the first quarter of 2001, rising to 301,000 in first quarter of
2003, and 645,000 in the first quarter of this year. They estimate
714,000 connections for this current quarter, and over a million for
third quarter. These connections include all direct and third-party
pay-as-you-go and subscriber uses. Wayport also provided its raw
revenue figures for the last three year. The company started with $1.5
million received in 2002's first quarter, rising consistently and
steadily to $6.1 million in the first quarter of 2004. They estimate
$6.7 million for second quarter, $8.7 million for third quarter, and
over $10 million in the final quarter of 2004. The company's CEO
expected to produce about $1.5 to $2 million per week within 12 months
for an annual runrate of $75 to $100 million. Under Wi-Fi World,
subscriber connections ostensibly won't be counted because Wayport
will receive fixed fees per venue regardless of connections. However,
Wayport will still collect walk-up fees for two-hour sessions ($2.95
for two hours) which they will share with the retail venue....

09/23/2004 12:55 AMIn many situations, accurately estimating the length of a certain
process (copying a large file, loading data from a server, retrieving
files from the Internet) would be both difficult and inefficient. What
you end up with is a process that is going to take long enough to make
the user wait, yet you have no easy way to indicate the percentage of
the task that has completed. A regular progress bar would be rather
meaningless, so you need some form of "Working…" indicator.

Wayport to be Replaced at SeaTac
Wayport to be Replaced at SeaTac
02/10/2004 02:40 AMThe new Wi-Fi network that AT&T Wireless is building at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will replace the existing network
which is owned and operated by Wayport: Wayport appeared unaware of
the new network or the impending cancellation of its relationship with
the airport. The airport will own the network that AT&T Wireless
is building and AT&T Wireless isn't charging the airport for the
equipment or installation. The Wi-Fi network comes for free as part of
AT&T Wireless's contract to install cellular equipment that will
improve cell coverage inside the airport. Airport officials have not
decided who will operate the new Wi-Fi network but they are clear
about the future of Wayport's network. "Wayport will depart," said Bob
Parker, a SeaTac spokesman. Wayport has operated the network at SeaTac
for over four years. Its contract ended last year and since then it
has been on a month-to-month contract with the airport. "Wayport owns
those hotspots. We imagine they will come in and remove them," said
John Faulkner, aviation business manager for SeaTac. He hopes that the
Wayport network can be shut down at a time that will correspond with
the completion of the new network to avoid a breech of service. The
new network should be finished by early 2005, though an AT&T
Wireless spokesman said he expects it to be completed before then.
Wayport seemed unaware of the changes taking place at SeaTac. "We know
they're talking to AT&T. We haven't heard anything official," said
Dan Lowden, vice president of marketing for Wayport. "We look to
continue to work with SeaTac in the way we are." Wayport could be in
the running to operate the new network, though it's more likely that
if Wayport is involved in the future network it would be through
roaming deals with the company that ultimately will operate the
network, Faulkner said. As part of the request for proposals to build
the cellular and Wi-Fi networks, the airport gave participants the
option of bidding on the Wi-Fi operations business as well. AT&T
Wireless was one of the bidders that expressed interest in operating
the network but the airport has not yet decided who will operate the
network. "We want to do the business planning to figure out how to
parcel out the network and structure the revenue model," Faulkner
said. SeaTac wasn't unhappy with the service from Wayport but the
decision to build a cellular network...

Wayport Hits 6,300 Locations
Wayport Hits 6,300 Locations
01/04/2005 02:27 AM Wayport has 6,300 locations equipped; 5 million sessions in 2004:
Wayport announced that they have exceeded 6,300 hotspots between
locations with which they have directly contracted and those that they
operate as a managed service, primarily for SBC Communications's
FreedomLink network. The company also said that they had 5 million
connections in 2004, with 600,000 in October alone. Wayport had about
1,000 location at the end of 2003, and a significant subset included
in-room wired broadband hotels with Wi-Fi just in lobbies. Virtually
all new locations are Wi-Fi only in retail establishments. Dan Lowden,
vice president of marketing at Wayport, said in an interview on Monday
that Wayport believes they are now the biggest Wi-Fi network in the
U.S., having exceeded T-Mobile's count, which is just under 5,300
according to T-Mobile's location finder. (This doesn't include
T-Mobile's fee-based roaming partners.) "We're very very excited about
it; it's a big milestone for us. We're excited to be the biggest in
the United States," Lowden said. Lowden said that Wayport is adding
about 150 locations per week. They expect to exceed 6,000 McDonald's
restaurants by third quarter of 2005, pushing their total over 10,000
locations. Because certain large footprints have already been tied up,
such as many coffee chains, and because of Wayport's exclusive deal
for fast-food restaurants with McDonald's, Wayport is pushing into
different kinds of spaces and services. For instance, their deal with
Hertz gives them an alternate presence at airports. And Wayport will
work with venues that may not need public Wi-Fi at all, or it's an
adjunct to the real purpose: private services like cashless
transactions (which they're doing with McDonald's) and security.
Lowden also noted that even with the hotel market so widely built out
with high-speed services, there's still a lot of room to grow or
rebuild. "We continue to see opportunities where folks have had three
or four service providers over the last three or four years," he said.
Wayport's now an established firm with major partners making it easy
for them to bat clean up in cases such as these. The company has grown
fairly rapidly in the last year to handle the new contracts with over
330 employees now, with 150 hired in the last year....
Wayport Bags Golden Arches
Wayport Bags Golden Arches
04/13/2004 11:20 AMWayport will unwire 13,000 McDonald's: Wayport, one of the very
earliest and longest-lasting Wi-Fi hotspot operators, has reportedly
become the sole contractor to provide Wi-Fi service in 13,000
McDonald's. The company's CEO is quoted saying that they would add
service in up to 3,000 stores this year. Wayport recently snagged The
UPS Store contract as well, which involves thousands of stores in the
U.S. The service will cost $2.95 for two hours, a substantial discount
over most similar pay-as-you-go plans in the U.S. and Europe,
significantly below the closest comparable large domestic network,
T-Mobile HotSpot, which charges $6 per hour (one-hour minimum) or $10
per day. Cometa Networks and a Toshiba division were also in trials
with McDonald's. Cometa recently lost its largest reseller partner,
AT&T Wireless, for reasons that weren't disclosed, even as it signed
up Barnes & Nobles's several hundred U.S. locations. Toshiba's product
always seemed to be a strange play for a company with little Wi-Fi
strategy; more of a turnkey-hotspot product than a network plan. None
of the articles on the McDonald's deal mention the impact on
McDonald's own operations. Back in July 2003, a McDonald's executive
mentioned how important the full gestalt of Wi-Fi might be the
company: providing them with the ability to have wireless
point-of-sale components, offer reduced-price access to staff (thus
reducing employee turnover), and letting district managers and
contractors have inexpensive access....

Omni Hotels Promotes Wi-Fi, Double Miles
05/06/2004 03:52 PMOmni Hotels has a contest and promotion tied with Wi-Fi: Omni offers
free wireless Internet access at all of their 40 hotels. The promotion
provides double airline miles through June for qualifying stays, but
if you sign up to join their Select Guest program, you're entered in a
contest to win a home Wi-Fi system (laptop, card, wireless gateway,
and a year's worth of DSL/cable service). A lesser prize is the WiFi

enough Wi-Fi finding ability to be useful. Omni Hotels started

Useful Dead Technologies
02/01/2005 09:18 PMAs time progresses, we expect technology to progress as well. It
doesn't always do so. Whether from corporate greed or corporate
stupidity or just plain evil orneryness, some very good technologies
have been allowed to die, usually being replaced by something vastly
inferior and sometimes not being replaced at all. Listed here are
some technologies that were very useful, but have become not more
useful but less; or died off completely. These are good and useful
technologies that have been superceded by less useful and usually very
annoying technologies.
