Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

Gunfight at the WS Corral

Gunfight at the WS Corral 05/18/2004 11:41 AM
As a student of WS-Geography and WS-Politics (and there’s a lot to learn), my eyebrows were first raised by a pointer to a warmish protest (I quote: “... the draft Oasis Web Services Reliability specification was savaged in a most unfortunate manner... We are also informed that the IBM assassination attempt will be posted on the Oasis web site which further adds insult to injury...”) concerning a presentation entitled Critical Comparison of WS-RM and WS-R, which is indeed po sted on the Oasis site. However, to keep things fair, the site also has a pointer to the response from the WSRM TC. I totally have no opinion as to who’s right, or if the problem is a fruitful area for standardization work. But I wonder why, if there are differing ideas on how to solve this problem, and there is a standards organization at work, the differing ideas aren’t being hashed out in the standards organization. Clues may be found in the email thread beginning here. It’s tough for strangers to learn a new landscape when it’s ravaged by warring tribes.

WS-Discovery enables advertisement and dynamic discovery of services on both ad-hoc and managed networks. Services may be organized in a hierarchical scope, and clients can query for services by type as well as scope without heavy administrative costs. This specification enables numerous design patterns for enterprise services; provides a discovery architecture for peer-to-peer services like buddy lists, websites, and file shares; and forms the basis for discovering network-attached devices such as printers, cameras, and PDAs.

Sysdeo Tomcat Plugin 3.0 Released

Sysdeo Tomcat Plugin 3.0 Released 07/30/2004 03:56 PM

Version 3.0 of Sysdeo Eclipse Tomcat Launcher plugin was released today.  According to the readme file (txt), source code debugging should now work again although existing Tomcat projects will have to be tweaked by hand:

When using Tomcat 5, Eclipse does not stop on breakpoints set in generated java files for JSP. This is fixed only for new Tomcat projects, for existing ones follow those steps:

...

My version of the instruction:

  1. Open your Tomcat project's 'Properties' dialog.
  2. Goto 'Java Build Path' >> 'Source' panel.
  3. Make sure 'Allow output folders for source folders' checkbox is checked.
  4. Select and expand Tomcat 'work' directory in the list of source folders above the checkbox.  If you don't have it, add it.
  5. Select the last child item (should be 'Output folder: blah') and click-on the 'Edit...' button on the right.
  6. Set or browse to the 'work' directory.
  7. OK, all the way back.

The problem was that, while the 'work' directory was known as a source folder, there was only one output folder (usually 'bin' or 'WEB-INF/classes').  Since Java files generated from JSP files are compiled in-place by Tomcat, object files (.class) ended up in the 'work' directory instead of the default output directory where Eclipse debugger was expecting them.  So the fix was to tell Eclipse that .class files for the Java files in the 'work' directory are within the same directory.  Duh.

Thanks to Bruno Leroux for writing Sysdeo Tomcat plugin.  Hey, Bruno.  Where is your tip jar?

Dynamic languages and enterprise VMs

Dynamic languages and enterprise VMs 01/08/2004 07:09 PM
We hoped 2003 would bring a rapprochement between the dominant enterprise VMs, Java and .Net, and the dynamic-language VMs that are still in many ways well-kept secrets. That mostly didn't happen. At the JavaOne 2003 technical keynote in June there was a nod in the direction of JSR (Java Specification Request) 223, which would enable languages such as PHP to be used in the Java Web tier. But the stewards of the enterprise VMs still aren't pushing to integrate them with the popular and productive dynamic-language VMs.

Jython, the Java/Python hybrid, has a growing cult following, but isn't on Sun's radar screen. Microsoft has yet to deliver on its early promises to make dynamic languages first-class citizens of the CLR. Here's hoping that the many VMs that flourished in 2003 will work better together in 2004. [Full story at InfoWorld.com (part of 2003 Technology of the Year)]
The ever-quotable Sean McGrath has said, of Jython:
Jython, lest you do not know of it, is the most compelling weapon the Java platform has for its survival into the 21st century. [Sean McGrath]
Hyperbole? Maybe not. This weekend, I was working with the Java API to Sleepycat's Berkeley DB XML, and it felt like one of those bad dreams in which you're slogging through molasses toward an ever-receding goal. I switched to Jython and quickly got the job done. And it was the same job (indexing and searching content) using the same engine (Berkeley DB XML). ...
