Macworld: PowerLogix replaces PowerCube
with ClearCube
01/09/2004 09:49 PM

Apple's Power Mac G4 Cube may have been discontinued a while back, but the computer still has its fans. With that in mind, PowerLogix announced a follow-up to its limited-run PowerCube: the ClearCube, an acrylic enclosure that improves on the original Cube box with better airflow so that you can upgrade your CPU and video card without worrying about heat problems.

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login 06/08/2004 12:31 PM
Pronto Networks introduces USB key to allow secure login without passwords: Pronto's Internet Key lets a user plug in this small device into a USB port to authenticate themselves over a Pronto-based network. The release doesn't mention what software is required to use the system, which was co-developed with Sweet Spot Solutions. While this is an idea that's been churning for a while--Microsoft is working on something of this sort, for instance--it's problematic when it's a single-vendor solution. Think about the grocery store affinity programs: how many cards do you have to carry to get the best price if a single store isn't convenient to you? My mother-in-law has a dangly array of those, which are capable of being managed, but not ideal. So, too, would a USB-based authentication system quickly get out of hand if you needed to carry a separate key for each system you might use. The best solution will be something akin to a SIM card as used in GSM phones, which has already been successfully tested as a method of secure authentication across a Wi-Fi network to a back-end cellular accounting system. Instead of a single key for each system, carry a USB key with either biometric (fingerprint) or password-based strong encrypted for mounting that contains a variety of certificates for use with an 802.1X EAP-TLS system. Even better, embed Secure ID into the USB key so that its ever-changing number is visible. This would provide yet another level of security: stealing the certificate and the username/password doesn't gain access without the Secure ID number. These kinds of authentication systems don't need to be baroque, and different networks might require different levels of security. But there should be checks and balances so that the theft of a string of data (like a certificate) or a piece of hardware (like a USB key) doesn't jeopardize the integrity of network....

Beyond PDF: Digital Delivery Develops: Interesting article on the future of the PDF and competing platforms that have developed to knock PDF of its perch.

Yet it has its share of critics who complain that it's not the most effective digital distribution method. Among its most famous broadsides was Jakob Nielsen's June, 2001 Alert Box column in which he concluded that the PDF was great for printing out documents, but lousy for online reading. Others complain about Acrobat Reader's load time, especially on Web sites. In spite of these criticisms, the PDF has solidified its place as the leader in electronic document distribution.

Top VCs Trying To Discourage The

It seems that some of the bigger name venture capitalists out there are suddenly saying that there's too much venture money flowing into the market again and that means that it's much more difficult for the horses they've backed to compete. Apparently, they would prefer it if venture financing remained an exclusive little club where the old boys could pick two or three players and let them fight it out in the dog pit, and then pick up their winnings at the IPO window. Of course, I'm not sure why these guys should care so much. Assuming they know how to make a good investment, then who cares if the other VC firms are throwing their money away? They always talk about how much their guidance and experience helps the companies they invest in - so what do they care if lesser VCs are backing other companies that compete with their companies?

Competition can be good

Competition can be good 06/03/2004 07:11 AM

I've said many times, competitors can be your best teachers. They're perfect mirrors, look at a competitor and you can get an idea of what people see when they look at you. A good competitor knows you as well as anyone else, and vice versa.

I point to the competition when they're playing reasonably fair. It's not always good for business, but I assume our readers are smart, and that they'll make the right decision given all the facts. And by assuming readers are smart, we attract smart readers.

OS X Virus Competition Scrapped

OS X Virus Competition Scrapped 03/29/2005 09:00 AM
Legal fears have led to the organisers of a competition to create the first in-the-wild virus to infect Mac OS to halt the event. DVForge, which builds Apple accessories, was offering a $25,000 prize to the first person to create such a virus - so far, none have bene detected in the wild.

The firm put up the cash - which would have gone to the first person to infect two G5 PowerMac computers running Mac OS X 10.3 connected to the internet without firewalls or antivirus protection - in response to a warning from Symantec that the Apple OS would come under increasing attack from viruses. Jack Campbell, chief executive at DVForge, said: "I have taken the difficult decision to cancel our contest. I have been convinced that there may be legal issues stemming from such a contest, beyond those determined by our own legal counsel prior to announcing the contest."

Symantec's warning came in its seventh Internet Security Threat Report, released last week. The firm - which produces a Mac version of its popular Norton Antivirus software - was faced with accusations that it had a vested interest in stirring up fear of viruses among the Mac community following the report's release.

Telecom Competition Shrinking 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
The Federal Communications Commission claims it's going to really, really look hard at the Sprint-Nextel merger. Oh, sure. This is the same FCC that's rubber-stamping the regional phone monopolies' competition-stifling moves in local phone service, the same FCC that's letting cable and phone broadband providers keep out alternative ISPs. There's all kinds of interesting action at the edges these days, in the wireless-data space for the most part. But the incumbent powers are doing everything that such companies do when they see a threat. They're merging up a storm and working to keep competition out of traditional markets. And the government that's supposed to encourage competition is doing everything but officially bless the competition-shrinking trends. Not good.
