Drop Some Bows

Drop Some Bows 01/09/2004 09:45 PM

A little known fact about me: I have incredibly sharp elbows, elbows so sharp that they'd be considered my superpower. Not the most interesting fact, but a fact nonetheless. So, it was a great pleasure for me to hear Cameron...

Philippine Bows to Terrorists

Philippine Bows to Terrorists 07/12/2004 09:03 PM

First Spain and now Philippine.  Are they out of their minds?  At least South Korea managed to hold steady despite all the noise from the selfish peace and justice loving liberals.  They are selfish because they are ruining the country to satisfy their emotional and ideological needs.

I believe that the war against Iraq was unjustified but it's insane to give in to terrorists' demands regardless of circumstances.  Even if Philippine was going to pull out troops anyway, it should have waited to avoid appearing as if they were pulling out because of the terrorist's demands.

As to saving the lives of kidnap victims, I wonder what the Philippine government would have done if the terrorism and kidnapping took place within Philippine?  Give in?Rewarding terrorists will only encourage more terrorism.  What will they do when terrorists start popping up everyewhere because terrorism offers better result than demonstrations?  What?  Tell them to stand in a line so you can service them properly?

Is a civilian's life more sacred than a solder's life?  Bullshit.  On war against terrorism, everyone is on the frontline.  I am on the frontline of war against terrorism alongside my 10 year old son, my wife, my parents, my friends, and collegues.  We are fighting in our homes, neighborhoods, freeways, shopping malls, restaurants.  And the war is on 24 hours a day every day.  Terrorism can step in anywhere and any time if they think they can scare people into giving them what they want.

Giving in to terrorist demands, even if it's just for an ice cream cone or a few dollars, amounts to feeding a beast that can breed like rats.  Giving in to demands of terrorists far away amounts to thinking that one can run away from terrorism.  What a silly idea.  It's as silly as trying to build a wall around Middle East or banning Islamic religion.

The Drop

The Drop 05/21/2004 06:58 PM
Well, first I was enjoying myself a lot, and then I went to see Troy. Here's my review of the movie:

Bollocks.

Lemme put it this way: The only thing I found slightly interesting was Sean Bean as Odysseus, who delivers a very nice performance. If he hadn't been there, I would've walked out of the theatre. Seriously. Ever since Deep Impact have I never wanted to leave the theatre, but this was really, really close. I had to amuse myself during the movie trying to calculate how many modern soldiers would've turned the battle, or what would a Battlemech look like when standing next to the walls of Troy at dawn.

Even the soundtrack - consisting mostly of a woman wailing - was boring. The only interesting thing was the play on the theme from Stargate during Achilles' death. Nice touch.

I really, really, really would not like to see this movie ever again. Hell, if the highlight of the movie is the sight of Brad Pitt without clothes - then something is deeply wrong. And yes, I'm straight. Straight, but in-fucking-credibly bored.

Sirius Stream Jockey, Then A Sharp Turn
Into a Delphi XM Roady 2 Review

roady2_sirius.jpg image

Sirius has a new model of their satellite radio hardware, the Stream Jockey [pictured right, because I keep going right to left for some reason]. Also known as the XACT XTR Plug & Play Satellite Receiver, the $100 device can be outfitted with a universal docking station for another $60, or desperate docking stations for the car and home can be thrown in for $50 apiece. It's clear that the Stream Jockey is Sirius's answer to the Delphi XM Roady 2, which I just so happen to have been testing for the last month or so.

So let that be my heavy-handed segue into my experiences with the Roady 2, after the jump.

Sharp CE-MR01

Sharp CE-MR01 12/27/2004 01:28 PM

This year definitely was the year of the streaming media device. Sharp is introducing a new unit in Japan early next year, called the CE-MR01, designed to stream a variety of image and movie formats over Wi-Fi. And it looks nice and all (you really can't tell with these things until you use the interface), but I can't help but wonder if they are just a flash in the pan.

DVDs are still a dominant content delivery platform for movies and television, which means everyone will need a DVD player. PVRs with hard drives are common for people with cable and satellite television. There are plenty of set-top boxes already, I'm saying. Since these streaming media devices are basically just decoding chipsets with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, why do they need to be separate units at all? I bet by this time next year, you'll be hard pressed to buy a DVD player that doesn't do streaming media from a network share.

Sharp LL-151-3D Reviewed 12/29/2004 12:01 PM

sharpll1513d_rev.jpg imageThere's no doubt that the Sharp LL-151-3D is a cool product—3D displays without any goofy headgear is the double pluses. But are any of you guys actually using them? I can think of a few situations (medical, 3D imaging) where they'd be handy, but the 15-inch size seems a little down market for hot-to-trot medical researchers/Science Officers. And it's too expensive for gaming, costing more than most gaming PCs do in total. Anyway, just curious. There's got to be a way I can justify buying one for work.

Why? Because the inside is filled with solid gold pudding, and developing non-conductive golden pudding is the sort of science that doesn't come cheap.
