01/02/2005 09:28 PMAP - In not-too-secret online forums, Wesley Snipes' latest movie,
"Blade: Trinity," is the subject of intense discussion and evaluation.
But unlike typical movie fan sites, the chatter from visitors to Web
sites like VCDQuality.com doesn't key on the vampire film's plot,
acting or bloody visual effects. Instead, computer users dish out
praise or criticism on the caliber of video and sound achieved by
online groups whose sole mission is to make available unauthorized
copies of Hollywood films within a day or two of a movie's debut, if
not before.

07/09/2004 01:30 PMThe Motion Picture Association of America Inc. (MPAA) warned against a
"growing global epidemic" of movie piracy over the Internet this week,
citing a survey of Internet users in which nearly one in four
respondents had illegally downloaded a movie online. The study,
conducted by online research company
OTX, queried 3,600 Net users in
eight countries, and was cited by the MPAA as the harbinger of the
tough times the industry faces ahead in grappling with online piracy.

Online-Piracy Raids Net First Conviction
12/28/2004 04:59 PMTo all potential software pirates out there, head this warning. You
might be the next to feel the wrath of the authorities as they
celebrate their first, true conviction for the FBI. Personally, I
think that the 15 year sentence was a little harsh considering this
kid is likely to do time with some really unpleasant people. That
being said, 5-7 year sentence would not have been out of the
question….

Five Years In Jail For Putting A Movie

Five Years In Jail For Putting A Movie
Online
11/12/2003 09:04 PMThe latest Hollywood friendly law to be proposed by some Senators who
have strong Hollywood financial backing would
make it a felony to take a video camera into a movie theater or to
put a film up on the internet, with penalties including up to five
years in jail. Of course, we already have copyright law that covers
this particular crime, but that's not enough for folks in Hollywood
who seem to believe that the more you criminalize, the more people
will want to pay you. Now, clearly, videotaping a film in the theater
or putting it on the internet is illegal. But, I don't see how it
requires a new law, or how anyone could possibly justify
five
years in prison for the action. The bill won't go anywhere as
it's being introduced just as the session is ending, but it is likely
to show up again next year. It will be interesting to see what
happens when video cameras on mobile phones become more common. Will
people be prevented from taking their phones into the theater as well?
If someone wants to record a brief clip to send to a friend (which
could be seen as
promoting the film) will they get tossed in
jail?
