The Storm Warning That Wasn't

The Storm Warning That Wasn't

The Storm Warning That Wasn't 01/08/2004 08:40 PM

The folks over at the National Weather Service were a bit surprised yesterday when they saw that they had put out an "impending blizzard warning" when they were all sitting around marveling out how nice the weather actually was. Turns out that someone in another office had sent out a test message that accidentally went live. Then, thanks to our automated world, the winter storm warning started appearing all over the internet on weather pages that simply take information from the National Weather Service and repost it. The only thing I can think of is that this is the first time I've actually seen the weather people admit that they were wrong.

Sandia supercomputer to be world's fastest, yet smaller and less expensive than any competitor: This description of the new "Red Storm" computer being developed at Sandia is like porn for hardware geeks. Supposedly, this machine is going to take the title of World's Fastest Computer back from the NEC Earth Simulator.

The machine has 96 processors in each computer cabinet, with four processors to a board. Each processor can have up to eight gigabytes of memory sitting next to it. Four Cray SeaStars — powerful networking chips — sit on a daughter board atop each processor board. All SeaStars talk to each other "like a Rubik cube with lots of squares on each face," says Camp. "Cray SeaStars are about a factor of five faster than any current competing capability."

Messages encoded in MPI (the Message Passage Interface standard) move from processor to processor at a sustained speed of 4.5 gigabytes per second bidirectionally. The amount of time to get the first information bit from one processor to another is less than 5 microseconds across the system. The machine is arranged in four rows of cabinets. There are a total of 11,648 Opteron processors and a similar number of SeaStars.

USAToday has an article today about how the machine is based on an 80-year-old mathematical theory.

Ideas from an early 20th century British scientist are at the heart of a massive supercomputer expected to be the fastest in the world once it's assembled at Sandia National Laboratories.

Mathematician Lewis F. Richardson wanted a way to forecast the weather. But the basic concepts he envisioned — a way for many calculations to be shared quickly and integrated — lie at the heart of Sandia's machine, Red Storm, which will be used in nuclear weapons work.

In Part 1 of this interview, we learned just how much Linus Torvalds and others have increased their productivity through the use of Bitkeeper to handle kernel patches. In this conclusion to the interview, we examine the consequences of that increase. Is it good or bad for the Linux kernel that more patches than ever are being applied? Both Larry McVoy, author of Bitkeeper, and Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, offer their opinions.

It has been a couple of years since the Linux kernel mailing list was debating the issues of Linus Torvalds' scalability and the use of a proprietary source management tool called Bitkeeper to handle kernel patches. Now that the dust has settled, and intrigued by a press release from Bitkeeper author Larry McVoy that claimed impressive productivity gains for Linus Torvalds and other kernel hackers using Bitkeeper, NewsForge decided it was time to talk with McVoy on the current state of affairs between the free software hackers and his proprietary code. This is part one of that interview; part two will appear tomorrow.

snow!6 - 11 inches of snow is forecast for NYC in the next three days. I can see snow already falling outside my window here at work, and this is what's predicted for tomorrow:

Snow along with gusty winds at times. Cold. Temps nearly steady in the low 30s. Winds NNE at 20 to 30 mph. Snow accumulating 4 to 7 inches.

Yikes! Tomorrow morning is my NYRR Hot Chocolate 15K, which I'm really looking forward to. Hopefully it won't be too snowy to run, and then after it's over, I can come home and get in my cozy bed and read all afternoon as it snows heavily outside.

Update: totally weird. Exactly a year ago it was snowing as well, and I was excited and posting about it. And a year ago, Gina posted a picture of snow outside her window at work. It's starting to look like that outside our window here at work, a year later. Does this simultaneous anniversary snowstorm mean that we'll have another snowy winter? Or are we experiencing some strange Groundhog Day (the movie, not the Day) experience?

The first big snow was yesterday. It was really something. I love snow. Its so beautiful to see the first snow come crashing down. I always have a dream the night before a really big snow of that next days snow. It's quite odd actually.

I'm sick now too. I always get sick at least once during winter. This time its a really bad cold. My throat hurts so bad, I can't possibly explain it.

I didn't go to school today, much to sick and tired for that.

Snow running success!

Snow running success! 01/07/2004 06:51 PM
Just like the Postal Service, neither wind nor snow stopped me, David, and Alaina from running this morning's Hot Chocolate 15k. Designated a "fun run" by the NY Road Runners, it wasn't timed, and the distance was reduced to 6 miles. But it was fun. Not only are we crazy enough to run in a blizzard, David was crazy enough to moblog the event!

» Here's the start
» Heading down the course
» My shoulder, smiling Alaina, David's arm
» Frozen water at the water station
» David and I chugging along (not really suffering as much as it appears)

Our time? 1:04.38, not too shabby with all the snow on the ground and wind in the air. And at that speed, there was lot of opportunity for gabbing along the course. And of course, our fearless supporters Anil and Jason were there to cheer us along. Meanwhile, unless it stopped snowing while I was sleeping (which I doubt), it's been snowing since ~11AM yesterday, which means we're into our 30th hour of snow! But I think I'm done being out and about in it. From now on it's all BB&B -- baths (hot), bed, and books.

Update: one final photo snapped by Anil that I call Triumph!, aka Us at the finish.
