01/09/2004 09:58 PMEE Times:
Verizon to spend $1 billion on 3G CDMA2000 EV-DO rollout. Let's
see, $1B divided by $80/month divided by, say, 5 years is over 200,000
subscribers. For a network which cannot support voice, that's a big
gamble (unless they have a cheap upgrade path to EV-DV).

Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?
Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?
08/27/2004 01:30 PMRumors are flying that Verizon is in the midst of building out EvDO in
New York City: NYC will serve as a crucial example of how the
higher-speed mobile data networks compete next to Wi-Fi. Both networks
have upsides in the city. Wi-Fi is higher speed, lower cost, and
available in many places. EvDO will be lower speed, higher cost, but
available in more places (although cellular coverage is notoriously
bad in the city). At the end of the day, there's a niche for both
networks and if the price is right, enough customers for both....

MSNBC Writer Praises EVDO
MSNBC Writer Praises EVDO
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Gary Krakow loves EVDO: Verizon Wireless's 1xEv-DO cellular data
service isn't available everywhere yet, but Krakow loves even the
current level of ubiquity and speed. A number of my colleagues think
that even a few hundred kilobits per second of download will be
adequate for most users, rendering Wi-Fi connected to a T1 line or
even faster ADSL service--like 6 Mbps down and 768 Kbps--a bit of
overkill. I tend to think these colleagues don't fully appreciate how
many business travelers there are in the U.S.--40 million of them by
one count, 30 million of which carry laptops--and how many of those
travelers have high-bandwidth applications that they struggle to use.
Customer-relation management (CRM) software, Java or ActiveX based
internal applications, or even simple file exchange requires a fair
amount of bandwidth to offer the "it's like I'm in the office"
experience. Even uploading a 10 MB PowerPoint presentation is torture
at the 50 to 100 Kbps per speed that's the maximum that EVDO can offer
right now. Downloads might break 2 Mbps at peak performance, more
likely averaging a very respectable few hundred Kbps, but uploads
aren't emphasized in the current generation of technology. Tell that
to the folks trying to send high-resolution pictures and movies from
fancy new camera phones, too! Krakow doesn't overstate the advantages
of EVDO, however. He's pretty realistic. And for general email and Web
browsing, EVDO is more than adequate. Remember that the 1x in 1xEv-DO
stands for 1.25 MHz of spectrum. A 3x flavor of CDMA2000 will use 3.75
MHz and be able to offer much more speed in both directions. One
flavor in the lab would bring peak upload to 1 Mbps, for instance....
4400 Square Miles of EVDO
4400 Square Miles of EVDO
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Verizon Wireless says they've blanketed Los Angeles and environs: Its
BroadbandAccess service, its name for the package of 1xEv-DO they've
rolled out (or just plain EVDO if you want to be simpler about it)
fills Los Angeles County, parts of Riverside County and San Bernadino
County, and most of San Diego and Orange County. Overall, about 4400
square miles of coverage across populated SoCal. This announcement is
interesting because it was never entirely clear how much of a
metropolitan area that Verizon intended to install EVDO
throughout--100 percent? 95 percent? The city but not the suburbs?
Their work here is a clear signal that they're talking metro
deployment, not urban deployment....
Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the
Competition
Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the
Competition
10/28/2003 11:09 PMCell carriers are pretty far behind on 3G, but Verizon's early
deployment may give it an edge -- I mean, a competitive advantage:
While GSM operators struggle with GPRS (10 to 50 Kbps) and are rapidly
trying to get EDGE fully deployed (100 Kbps), Sprint is staying the
course with 1xRTT (50 to 70 Kbps), and T-Mobile and Nextel don't seem
to be in the running for anything more interesting. Verizon Wireless's
early 3G deployment (1xEvDO, 300 to 500 Kbps) in San Diego and
Washington, D.C., may pay off, Matt Maier of Business 2.0 notes,
because they simply have this service now at a fixed rate. The advent
of cell phone number portability about to be engaged ties in with
this: Verizon is the only cell company to back it. They want people to
switch over, sign up for data, and then lock them in with long-term
contracts and the only real 3G that will have any scope in 2004. Great
plan! (All speeds more or less real world, not the advertised
ones.)...
Real-Time Car Tracking with EVDO
Real-Time Car Tracking with EVDO
03/23/2005 05:36 PM
This is why EVDO cellular internet is cool: the guys from
EVDOInfo.com rigged together a little application using off the shelf
parts to display on a web page their car, its exact location and
velocity, as well as the current view out their window. It's tricks
like these that will make EVDO (and UMTS, if Cingular ever gets it
deployed) a standard feature for "carputers" before long.
And to think, just a few short years ago these technologies were
reserved for child molesters and enemies of the state.

01/08/2004 07:46 PMVerizon is announcing plans to spend $1B US in the next two years to
develop a wireless broadband network that will offer 300-- 500K speeds
at $79.99 a month, starting this summer.
The network, which will use third-generation or "3G"
technology provided by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO), will be fast
enough to allow consumers to download video and music as well as send
video messages. The high-speed network, called BroadbandAccess, will
be available to businesses and individual customers beginning in the
summer of 2004. Since 2003, Verizon has operated wireless broadband
networks in Washington, D.C., in a partnership with Lucent
Technologies, and in San Diego with Nortel Networks.
