Mobile Phones Replacing Cars In Our

Mobile Phones Replacing Cars In Our
Culture
04/29/2004 05:50 PMThe Economist has noticed that
mobile phones are rapidly replacing automobiles in our
culture. People used to be defined by their cars, but now young
people today are focused on customizing, personalizing and displaying
their mobile phones as a proxy for who they are. Phones represent
independence and mobility for teenagers today the way cars did in past
generations. Also, as the article points out - they're fashion items
where people feel compelled to buy new ones sooner than is probably
necessary. Both have advanced well beyond just being a better version
of what they came out of. Cars aren't just horseless buggies any
more, and mobile phones are a lot more than just a phone that's
mobile. Industry wise, there are similarities as well. Handset
makers build different phones off a few basic platforms and try to
segment the market with their different offerings. And, in both cases
established American and European handset makers are starting to
experience competition from cheaper Asian firms.

02/10/2004 02:44 AMBluetooth promises to make Personal Area Networks (PAN) a reality.
Unfortunately, it already has a few serious security flaws that need
to be nailed down.
Bluetooth Phones Could Leak Data
Bluetooth Phones Could Leak Data
08/02/2004 03:55 PMA pair of security experts have found a Bluetooth exploit which
allows hackers to steal any information stored on Bluetooth cell
phones. The pair (Adam Laurie & Martin Herfurt) demonstrated this
exploit on popular cell phones brands like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and
TDK today.
Many of the most popular models of Bluetooth-enabled cell phones can
be hacked easily, enabling a malicious hacker to steal phone books,
images, calendar information, or virtually anything else stored on the
phone, say a pair of security experts.
Adam Laurie, chief security officer and director of AL Digital and the
Bunker, a secure Web hosting facility in Europe, and Martin Herfurt, a
researcher at Salzburg Research, described the danger at a session
Friday at the Defcon 12 conference here. The pair demonstrated how
software tools they created give them virtually total control over
Bluetooth phones from a wide range of handset manufacturers, including
Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and TDK.
Widespread Vulnerabilities
Herfurt demonstrated three different ways to attack a phone: He could
send unsolicited text messages to the phone's screen, download all the
data stored on a phone (or manipulate the data on the phone itself),
and turn the phone into a roaming bug by forcing a targeted phone to
call another phone.

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PMMark Frauenfelder:
Tian says: "On March 7th, I took
photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries
to get away in Phoenix.
Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car
and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push
cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for
ransom."
I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car,
and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the
car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when
the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers
had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility.
"I didn't push it," he said.
Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to
stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has
so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've
got going.
